The appointments book up quick; however, I was lucky enough to be able to get an appointment in July. This humidity wreaks havoc on my natural hair and my strands try to pull off a style that only Diana Ross can! Luckily, my co-worker gave me very specific instructions on how to get to the shop. If you follow the GPS, it'll say that you've arrived, and I was like, "Arrived where?" You go up into a strip mall. It's the same strip mall where Mr. Crab is. Actually, it's right next door almost to Mr. Crab. I was offered a bottle of water, soda, or champagne. I went for the water, but maybe next time, I'll go for some bubbly. My treatment started off with a luxurious steaming then a wash. After being steamed, washed, and conditioned, my hair felt so soft. Then the straightening treatment. I don't know how she did it, but my hair was sooooo straight and silky after she was done. I was almost convinced that I was wearing a wig. It was so soft, silky and manageable. I told my usual hair girl about it and she informed me the salon owner tends to bully those that leave poor reviews about the salon on social media pretty hard- she showed me and I was appalled. The salon itself is very "liberal" politically with all the signage and stickers and conversation. I don't really care and respect everyone's right to their opinion and free speech- just a weird environment for a professional salon in my personal opinion. Finally, I've got it narrowed down to one stylist, I've double checked to make sure I don't see anything about closed books/not accepting clients, it all seems to check out, and it looks like they don't use a booking site, just DM or text to book. Perfect, I send the DM and I wait. Don't hear anything for about a week and I think, well, maybe they took some time off, they're super swamped, message got lost, whatever. I'm giving full benefit off the doubt. I decide to give it another go and send a text this time. Now here we are, another week has gone by with radio silence. Look, I'm not even upset that I can't get an appointment. You don't want my business, fine, but I'd rather you tell me to scram than get nothing at all. I reached out to Love That Hair and the owner answered right away. She said someone would contact me within an hour with instructions on an appointment. Latoria texted me and informed she could squeeze me in the following morning. After exchanging texts and pictures of my hair I was set to visit. With everything going on regarding COVID 19, the salon had steps in place to ensure clients are safe. They checked my temperature upon arrival and everyone kept masks on entire time while in salon. Latoria assessed my hair needs and did a great job of cutting my hair as requested. When washing and conditioning my hair she applied great pressure and massaged my scalp. Therefore, I do not have a lot of experience with salons. When my mom died, I was going to do my own hair with box dye and scissors I inherited from her. My friends staged an intervention and brought me to see Sarah at Eros Salon. When I went for my first visit, my hair was in rough shape, not having been cut for probably over a year. Sarah gently asked if it was okay to cut off all the damage. Despite my hair history and the passing of my mom, I am not particularly emotional about my hair, so I told her what I always told my mom. "This is your responsibility and you are the expert. Do what you need to do." We spent about 6-12 months getting my hair back in condition to do my preferred color, which is highlighter-bright pink. That's what we have kept doing for the past 5+ years. I tell her as long as it ends up pink and I can put it in a ponytail, I'm happy. She gets to try new products on me, and I get pink hair, so it's a win-win. Her space is the first floor of an old Victorian in the East End. It's got a cool vibe and it's nice that it's usually just the two of us so we can chat while we wait for the bleach to work. Sarah is a friend to all, so be prepared to not only get an artist but a friend too. There might be cheaper stylists but I don't know any better. I've referred multiple people to her and they are all obsessed. Sarah, thank you for holding my hand while I navigated paying for hair care for the first time.
