This is not a serious salon. Went to first appointment & booked a second appointment at that time. I received a call 1/2 HOUR before my appointment (I had to drive over an hour to get there) that my stylist was not in. I opted at that time to go with another stylist & I booked a follow up appointment with her following my visit. THEN I get a call that she is "no longer providing those services" & asked if I wanted to book an appointment with another (3rd) stylist. I said no. THEN I get a text on Sunday, that I have an upcoming appointment & could not reschedule. I called at opening on Monay, got put on hold for 10 minutes, only to be very snippily talked to by whoever answers the phones. Cannot rate any lower than one star. I went to the salon today to buy two bottles of hairspray $32 each - It was about 10 AM and the girl did not even look up from her texting when I put my stuff on the counter and so I said excuse me but I could I check out she said oh sorry I'm texting my boss lol. The absolute best facials AND customer service. The manager has lead this salon with integrity and honesty for years. I had a not so good experience. The manager promised a solution that was above and beyond. Although she couldn't fulfill that promised resolution immediately she said she would as soon as a new employee came aboard. After time passed without contact I believed the promise was empty. I was amazed she truly hadn't forgotten and she did contact me directly to arrange the new service! Let's start with this: my first contact with my stylist was during my son's haircut. We spoke about the color I really wanted my hair to be and it was my treat to myself for my 40th bday. I took my hair out of my bun and he felt it, saw the length and thickness and told me it would take 4 or 5 hours. Ok, cool. So I book my appointment (he's been in the industry for 30+ years and has known my MIL over half of that- so I trust him). I arrive at my appointment a few minutes early and wait. He gets me in the chair and we look at the SAME pictures and talk about the color. I tell him I want the picture with CARAMEL highlights (after we looked back and forth at 3 pictures, then 2) and he brings swatches over. Some are very red and I tell him I like the darker color with more brown/black. He agrees. The top of my hair (front like he was going to cut bangs) and takes this large portion of my hair and puts it in a bun. He starts working on my highlights (which take well over an hour) and I'm in foil for another hour and 15 minutes. When we wash it and he brings the toner, it's a very creamy white, slight brown/pink hue to it. He applies that to everything that was just lifted and I sit again. We discussed the dark color for my base and decide on a #2 with a touch of blue (very dark). While that's processing, he colors my base. When he takes the second round of foils out of my hair, I'm in shock. It's BRIGHT RED, literally red, not like a red haired kind of hair. This is NOTHING like what I asked for. In fact, it was the exact colors of the one picture I said I wasn't brave enough to do! Meanwhile, I've been there over 6 hours. He tells me my hair has some damage (not in those words) and needs a botanical treatment. I say ok... NO COST IS DISCUSSED. He gets some liquid, pours it in a tiny spray bottle and sprays my wet hair then puts a HOT towel on top. While we're sitting, he tells me he'd like to tint my eyebrows to match my dark hair (I agreed that it would look nice) . NO COST IS DISCUSSED. Ok. After more than EIGHT HOURS in the salon (and he was doing at LEAST one more client while my hair was processing), my hair gets 4 conditioning/smoothing products and blow dried. I'm speechless. I don't want to be rude because of the connection with my MIL so I say I'm good. I purchased 4 products (shampoo, conditioner, etc) and was told my total...$982.76. I almost lost it there. I was told that it would be around $500 so fortunately I was prepared for a little more. I sat down in my car and began crying. The cut (razor cut that big section of hair from the bun) and point cut the rest, was horrific. The color was very wrong. I took pics when I got home and again when I straightened it. My hair literally has a shelf going across the back of my head. The next day, I got his cell # from my MIL and began contacting him. I sent pictures of how terrible the cut was along with how disproportionate the color was. He called the following day and we spoke about how unhappy I was but I was willing to let him correct it. I sent my schedule and he offered 1 day that I was working. (This is now Monday). I washed my hair Monday night with cold water and dried it. At least 1/2 of the color washed out. I sent more pictures and let him know I no longer trusted him or the product. His response was 'just trust me'. We've had a couple more conversations, the most recent asking HOW he planned on fixing my almost $1000 botched hair. I received no details like I asked. I made sure to include that I do NOT want further damage to my hair which is why I requested detail. After the same response, I requested a refund. I spoke with my MIL last night (Tuesday) and she agreed that it was terrible and assured me that she suggested a refund as well but perhaps letting him look at it. Today I spoke with her (after a more harsh request for money back) and was told he's very sorry, However, the manager is gone so a refund won't happen. I went into the salon today and asked for a manager and was told she was out if town. I briefly described my situation and was told they would let the OWNER know and someone would call me TODAY. NO CALL. I did receive 1 more text from the stylist... "hello"... Do NOT go to this salon and have high expectations for an even higher price tag. read more

I've been coming to Salon Ami since 2010. I have gotten a spray tan there, waxing, hair, nails, and more! I have always been very happy with my service and trust all the employees. For my hair I used to go to Amy; however, due to her switching sites sometimes and me wanting to come to the Independence location, I switched to Allison about three years ago. Didn't get a chance to use the services at the salon unfortunately. I brought my water in with me since it's suggested to hydrate before and after a massage. I missed the sign on the door that said you could not bring outside food/drink in, but was willing to take my cup back to my car. Fine. The thing that made me decide to cancel was the employees sarcastically sweet attitude while informing me about the water cup issue. I understand I made a mistake bringing it in, but she might as well have called me an idiot at the end of telling me "it's posted on the door" with the way she said it. I get it, things are different now, and I'm more than happy to comply with the rules, but delivery and attitude is everything to me. I'm not trying to be a "Karen", but I can see when someone is being condescending and rude, and I think this particular employee is a poor representation of your company. read more

I've had a number of spa services here, including pedicures, massages, and waxing. Everyone is friendly and professional, and has done a great job. I highly recommend the Aveda Stress-Fix services - the lavender scent of the products and their application definitely perform as promised by the name. My last service was a pedicure, and it was extremely relaxing. In addition, on a cold, gross winter day, the staff was extremely courteous and gracious about letting me hang around until it was safe to put my shoes on and leave. It's not something I can afford every time I need my nails done, but for a special treat, it's reasonable and worth the extra bucks. read more

I have used Aveda Salons for around 10 years. The last three hair appointments have been at the Ami Salon in Independence, Mo. This last hair appointment was worse than a disaster. I am a brunette, but the hair stylist put platinum blond all over my head in random order. So now I have brunette roots with platinum hair. It looks gaudy and terrible. To make it worse, my haircut is choppy, not symmetrical, and plain ugly. I have never experienced anything like this EVER. I paid $300 for a cut, color, and highlight, and it looks worse than if I had attempted the whole thing at home. It was so bad that I had to spray my brown root coverage over my entire head to attend a meeting because I was so embarrassed by the horrendous mess on my head. To top it all off, I called the salon to speak to the owner or manager. I received a return call from the receptionist saying the owner could re-do my hair in five days. I explained that I could not even work with the situation in my head and was told tough luck. No refund. No apology. Just wait five days and hope she can fix it, or I'm just out of luck. Terrible customer service... terrible salon. I cannot believe this is an Aveda-approved location. I sound like a horrible person (like a complainer), but I promise I am not. Salon Ami, you might have accomplished the impossible! I have been a faithful client at another salon for more than 15 years. I've never strayed and I've been 98% satisfied there. I recently received a gift card from friends and decided to use it for a massage, haircut, highlight, partial color, and brow wax. I spent just a little over 4 hours at the spa and salon and I'm looking forward to a future visit. The salon side was clean and contemporary with floor to ceiling framed mirrors in front of each styling chair. There was no clutter and all styling instruments were stored out of site. My stylist Christa was Awesome! She was personable and authentic. She explained Aveda products and processes clearly. She listened to my hair style wishes and made perfect suggestions. She was a good match and I already have a future appointment set. A few surprise bonuses included a thorough scalp massage, a hot towel wrap, and a hand massage all at the hair washing station. The bowels are padded and super comfortable and there were foot stools. I love that they maximize comfort. The brow wax came with cold stone therapy to soothe the skin. BEST THING EVER! Jackie took care of my massage. She was pleasant and also provided clear instructions specific to this salon. She gave three scent options and ensured I was comfortable with the temperature before beginning. The massage included a hot towel wrap treatment for the feet at the start of the session and the back at the end of the session. Often times, massage therapists fail to "dig in" with the pressure. This experience, by far, was the best massage I've ever had. She applied strong steady pressure and moved slowly through the muscles. Of course she provided water and was respectful of need for a few moments to reacclimate at the end of the session. So what's kept this from being a five star review? 1. The Scheduling. I asked for the services in order of massage, hair, wax. I did that knowing it would've made little sense to have a massage after hair styling because a good massage makes a mess of your hair! I assumed they would have booked them in the order I asked for them and would proactively put the massage first. That was NOT the case. I had an event immediately following my appointment and had to spend time restyling my hair at home. Seriously, who books this way? They apologized and frankly I was too excited for the pampering to complain. 2. The Pricing. I've paid a senior stylist for 15 years with the average hair appointment including highlights, color, and brow wax running between 130-150 depending on the amount of color. I always know that I will spend close to 200 per appointment after product purchase and tip. At this location I will be paying closer to 200 for the hair appointment with an additional 40-70 in product and tips. I want to have Christa become my regular stylist but I need to talk myself into the increased cost. I don't have grey hair yet, I can go longer between visits but I want to feel like I'm getting a fair price. I think I will give it one more visit and then make a final decision. The only thing wrong with this place is that the front desk lady was rude and shused me for asking my friend a question.. luckily I had Ashley as a stylist and she did a phenomenal job on me, being a mixed girl with hard to manage hair. I went in to Salon Ami this past Saturday and left looking pretty much the same as I walked in. Despite being charged $178 for a color, highlight, and style. This was my third time there and I really thought I'd found a top knotch salon that could be my go to place. I had been seeing Kristie and she's wonderful and did a great job. I had to see someone else this time because Kristie was booked up and I'm due to have a baby anyday now. I told my new stylist what I wanted and she checked with Kristie and got the info about what I'd been having done. I knew right away, still seeing it wet, that it wasn't what I wanted. My roots looked like they hadn't even been touched. I had a birthday party and a grad party to get to so I let it go, even being extremely upset that my style (curls) looked like a blowout from the 70's and not the current beach waves that I was hoping for. My hair didn't even stay for long because I don't think she even bothered to hair spray it. Then I was charged an outrageous amount which isn't what I paid the previous time and I got the same services except I added a style this time. I called yesterday to speak with the manager since they weren't open on Sunday, still haven't received a call back since he was on his way in when I called Monday. They lost a loyal customer and broke a pregnant lady's heart because I don't have the time or money to go and get this taken care of before my baby is born. I had made an appointment a few weeks ago for a hair color service and was sent a confirmation a few days prior. I confirmed and got to the salon only to find out that the stylist has been out for health reasons for a few days prior. I understand that life happens but when the front desk doesn't take care of calling the clients and let them know the situation, it isn't right. I had to have my husband take off work early to take the kiddos so i could have some me time. It's sad that because of the lack of communication at the front desk, I wont be returning to the salon. This is bad for the service providers as well as they expect the front desk to take care of this end of their services. As a former Aveda stylist myself, I would be very upset that I'm losing clients because of the front desk. They should be the back bone of a salon and this is not the case at all. read more

My niece was 20 minutes late to her appointment to get her make-up done on the 30th of December, HER WEDDING DAY, because of a wreck on 291 shutting the road down- a literal stand-still on the highway. Salon Amie refused to squeeze her in "because she was late". I would NEVER use this salon for any service if they can't find the compassion to fix a situation out of the client's control. (Oh yeah, her groom was in the E.R. the night before, and a bridesmaid being treated for cancer was in the E.R. the morning of the 30th). This girl NEEDED to be pampered a little on her wedding day. Very poor customer service, I had been give a 250.00 gift certificate for Christmas a few years ago. I had been traveling and now that I am back to town I tried to use it, not only would they not let me they were rude and ended up hanging up on me when I asked if it was legal to not honer a gift certificate that was previously purchased. If this is how they treat their customers that have already paid for a service, think how they will treat you if you are not happy with what they have done. Not a good experience at all. I had a community appreciation card so I started with my haircut. I was told I had to stand for my haircut because my hair was too long. Then, I was repeatedly burned by the blow dryer. It was horrible. Hurt so bad. Then, when I went to pay, the girl was so busy talking with 2 guys who were there about the natural gas smell in the building she hardly looked at me. She did manage to say "you do realize that with this card you will need to tip". Well yes, I do realize that! I was waiting for you to tell me where to write it or when to do it! Then she asked me to rebook and said "how often do you get your hair cut?" I told her every 3 months. She looked disgusted and said "well, 9 weeks from now is..." I suppose my answer wasn't acceptable. She never thanked me. I will not return. What a miserable experience. Can I give a negative score. If I could attach pictures, I would show you the burn from the waxing, it was horrid. I paid a bill of $268! I was astonished when they rang it up. I did buy shampoo and hairspray so I expected that $40. I was told the ALL OVER color and red highlights would be $134. I could not tell there was any new color anywhere in my hair. My friends kept saying, "I thought you got your hair done"; well, I went back to complain. Manager said, no refunds, store credit. I said, "why would I want store credit when I'm not coming back?". They were rude and act like they are so much better than other people who come in. It is an uncomfortable salon to begin with, but that told me I was never returning. Had they made some attempt to fix it, make the color obvious, and make it look like I actually got a hair cut, and even apologized for the burn, but NO, nothing. Just ignored all of it really. I had been going to a salon in a strip mall. The cheaper place. But, I decided that I wanted to treat myself to a new place, so made an appointment at Salon Ami. I loved the head massage and hand massage. I had a photo of what I wanted. My hair is already fairly short, but I wanted to go shorter, not quite pixie. It wasn't cut short enough, so I asked for it to be shorter. I was told that "it's pretty short". Well, it wasn't. I looked on the floor and there was no hair. The stylist barely clipped off anything. My daughter could not tell that I had a haircut. I should have learned, but I thought that I would try again. Same stylist....same thing. She barely cut my hair. Once again, there were no hair clippings on the floor. When I asked for the back to be shorter, she told me that it was pretty short. I'm not sure what she thinks is "pretty short", but this was not. I had the same photo with me. Even though the place is nice and the stylist is friendly, I won't be back. I'm not paying that kind of price to barely have my hair cut. I ended up back at the "cheaper place" and got exactly what I wanted. read more

Stopped in without an appointment for a manicure. The spa has a friendly staff, and there is a large product area. It was very clean and all of the staff members were professional. The basic manicure was $25 and that seemed like a fair price for the service received, which included a salt scrub and application of a warm moisturizing gell. read more

Poor customer service. The manager appears to not care if the client is satisfied. Had a bad cut at their Lee's Summit location about 6 weeks ago and was called by the manager at my insistence. Was offered a discount if I returned, so I went to the Independence location for a root touch-up and a few foils; paid over 80. Hair was way too dark and not what I requested. Stupid me returned today ...hair cut worse and now I paid 140. Cost never explained to me, so I was quite shocked when I went to pay. Talked to manager and was basically told, too bad. After receiving a horrible wax from another salon I was very worried about getting another one. I called and received an appointment the same day with Lacey. It was one of the best waxes that I have had and she provided me with very helpful tips if I ever receive another horrible wax again. I would give this a zero if I could. I had been going to this salon every two weeks for a year. My stylist was on maternity leave. The person they put me with was not experienced nor did she listen when I told her what I wanted or that I wasn't happy with the end result. I asked for a haircut. It was uneven. I asked for all over color. A light coating was put on but not all over. I asked for highlights that were not blond. I was informed they would not be blond. When the stylist finished she complimented me on my "blond highlights". I was very upset. She said it could be fixed the next time I came in. I called the next day only to be informed I would not be compensated in any way because there was no way to fix it. I was appalled. I had been very kind and patient with the situation and on top of all that I had been a loyal customer. I disputed the charge through my bank and got my money back. Absolutely terrible experience. My mom and I decided to go get pedicures together because we both had one purchased in advance from a special that was offered. From the advanced purchased one they said we could upgrade from a basic pedicure to a "spa pedicure." We agreed to it because it sounded like a nice upgrade and we wanted to spoil ourselves. Honestly I am not even sure what the difference would be...I guess we got to sit in a cushioned chair...thats about it. Didn't really work on our nails too much, didn't work on callouses, used gross towels and tools...it was just awful. Then we go to pay and they force a 20% gratuity on you! We were like "we didn't even like the service!" The cashier just said it wasn't an option and it had to be cash or check couldn't be a credit card of any kind. We continued to try and explain our grievances, but they couldn't give a crap about it. Oh and they had asked when we came if we would like anything to drink and we both said a water would be great...we never got water. When we mentioned it while we were paying they just seemed irritated so one of the cashiers got two little plastic cups and went over to the sink and filled them. It was just so rude and disrespectful. I absolutely will never ever be back here again. Terrible service and a terrible company. read more

Booked a massage. Told the receptionist about a bad experience at another salon with people talking loud, etc during my massage. Jackie did my massage at Salon Ami! She was WONDERFUL! However, all throughout my massage, I could hear stylists, customers, running water, hair dryers, then right next to the room I was in a client had a spray tan applied! The machine that does the spray tanning must be loud, because she and person applying tan, were talking and laughing loudly! The only time it was quiet, relaxing and enjoyable was when the A/C kicked on to block out the noise. I asked Jackie if the break room was just outside the door and she replied, a little noisy? I should have checked the books to see if anyone was coming in for a spray tan. We could have used a different room. They had rooms available down another hall that weren't being used! Why would you even do a massage right next to a spray tan room where you can hear them and all the stylists in the next room. I guess it doesn't take much to disappoint me but when you spend the bucks on a massage, I want peaceful relaxing ME time! Guess I need to find a massage place that isn't in with a salon. Jackie was wonderful but the salon - not so much. When I went to pay, receptionist asked how it was- told her the truth about the noise and she just looked down.
