I went to Salon 51 ten days ago for my first no-chip (Shellac) mani & a regular pedicure. I saw them listed as one of the salons using this new nail technology on the CND website & remembered I was pleased with a haircut from them a year ago. CND Shellac brand boasts a 14 day no chip guarantee. 2 days later, one finger chipped (peeled to be accurate.) Hey, nothing's for certain in life. ; ) But, my contention is that it has been 10 days and I still can't get a repair one finger. 1.) she was all booked up 2.) Next, she was sick 3.) no one else in the salon can repair a manicure (4.) next, she's sicker than we first thought (strep) (5.) They're closed Sundays, Mondays, and don't open until 12:30pm on Tuesdays; open only for 4 hours on Wednesdays. Are they semi-retired over there? Hmm, think the event already passed that I got my manicure for? You bet. My issue isn't with the Shellac, or the smudged big toes (b/c they rushed me out in my flip flops so they could close.) My issue is that I spent over $90 and I'm not even asking for my money back. I just want one f***g finger repaired!!! Is that so demanding?!? I'm not looking for a world-famous neuro-surgeon to be flown into Chicago... just a nail technician to fix the work [rolling my eyes.] Are they really in such a high demand field of work that they can't have anyone else? To sum it up, great haircut a year ago; small mishap on the no chip Shellac; but atrocious hours and negligible customer service to mop up their own work Not sure if I'm going to buy my own equipment for the Shellac manicure [I have better hours, Lol], or just go somewhere else that has better hours [which would be, umm... anywhere.] read more

I've been coming to Salon 51 for about 5 years. It is an upbeat modern full service salon. The staff is friendly and even though I'm there every 6-10 weeks, they still remember me by name! I feel very welcome when I'm there. Kim is my stylist and she's super patient and will work with you in terms of your style. She's a perfectionist and will make sure that you are fully satisfied with your cut and style. She also has great suggestions for latest trends and styles if you are just not sure what you want done. I love getting my hair done at Salon 51 with Alex! She does an amazing job. She is very talented, you can show her a picture of what you want your hair to look like.. and POOF by the time you walk out of the salon, your hair will look like what you asked. She has tacked ombres, highlights, bangs, inverted bobs, bobs, layers, you name it.. she will deliver. Also she does a great job styling your hair after the cut (major bonus). Not only is Alex amazing at doing hair cuts for women.. she can do cuts/styles for men too! I send my boyfriend to Alex, and again.. I told her I wanted his hair to look like Justin Timberlake slicked back side part (trendy now in mens hairstyles) and she did it! Best salon experience ever! The salon itself is gorgeous as soon as you walk in. My stylist was Kate, whom I recommend to everyone! She did an amazing job on my hair, while she always kept the conversation going. Very easy to talk to, makes you feel right at home. Kate knew exactly how I wanted me hair but managed to make it even more incredible than I imagined! While styling my hair she gave me a few tips for when I do it on my own, which helped me greatly! I had such a great experience that I convinced my friend to get her hair done the following day. Thank you Kate! Warning: Do not trust Salon 51 on your wedding day! A few weeks before my wedding my mom and sister, my MOH, changed their minds and wanted to get their hair done with the bridal party. Upon asking, while getting a trial done WITH my sister, I let them know if they did not have the availability, it was no big deal and they'd just find somewhere else. Alex thought about it and said she'd come in early that day to do their hair: they should arrive b/f salon opens at 8:30am and I was to arrive at 9. Let me stress, I would have never agreed to arrive earlier than 9 so they could get their hair done, I am NOT a morning person. So on my wedding day I overslept, totally not my fault, and I was stressed and devastated. I arrive only 15 min late amd find my stylist Alex had just begun, minutes before, on another bridesmaids hair. No call or anything. Needless to say, when my mom and sister arrived at 8:30 the salon and void of any employees. I waited for well over an hr. causing me to be late getting ready, my mom not even getting her hair done, and I did not get one pre-wedding bridal party pic. Alex was blatently rude while styling my hair and put little effort into her work. She scolded me saying that she didn't appreciate my mom and sis walking in and asking for her as they were "not even in her books" and I was to be there at 8:15. This place has absolutely no idea how to communicate with customers or how to provide quality customer service. They have a computer system that sends a text msg reminder for appointments. Mine says "don't forget about your upcoming appointment with Alex at 9am for an updo". Not 8:15. Obviously they have no idea how to use this appointment system which likely was a big expense incurred to improve overall customer service. She was stressed because her salon overbooked the day and she took it out on a very stressed out bride. Her attitude and snarky comments directed towards me and the whole situation on my wedding day ruined my mood on what should've been the happiest day of my life. I'd like to add that we did not make a scene or act inappropriately as I had my whole bridal party there waiting to have their hair done. My mom had to leave to keep it from coming to this--and called my fiancée crying her eyes out thinking she ruined my day. All I would've wanted was a refund for poor service and an apology along with well wishes for the day. Id like to thank these crabby people for this experience and for letting it show in their work. Please stay tuned for pictures of how my hair resembled a rats nest while cutting my cake. I hope Salon 51 reads this and learns to improve their customers experience and the quality of their work and accountability for their shortcomings. My experience in this salon was beyond AWFUL!! I made an appointment, but still had to wait 3 and half hours just to get keratin treatment done. But this was not enough, on top of waiting so long they overcharged me for the keratin treatment. Basic keratin treatment costs $100+ and it said so also on their website and they also told me $140+ when I called and asked for a price to book the appointment. However, once I got my hair done and went to pay, the total price was $250 after they discussed amongst themselves in a different language. I was so shocked and disappointed. The environment there is very fake. They try to be extremely friendly so you feel guilty to even say anything about how much they overcharged you for the services. I also got highlights done and the product they used destroyed my hair. My hair is dry and is constantly breaking and falling out. It was a HUGE mistake to trust them with my hair. Everytime I go back they raise the prices more and more. The owner really made sure last time that I would never go back to that hair salon. I would suggest you stay away as well! People giving them 5stars are probably friends and family because they DO NOT deserve the rating. read more

I moved to the Norridge area from Chicago so I wanted to find a salon closer to home and my hunt for a place I like was not so successful. I went to Salon 51 for the first time and made an appointment with anyone they had available for highlights and a hair cut. My appointment was with Jenny. She turned out to be great. She knew exactly what I wanted by having a conversation with me and gave me suggestions that I loved. I was happy with my highlights and my cut. I also had her cut my 5 year old daughter's hair as well. However a hair cut for a child is way too expensive. However it was worth the money for my own services.I think I paid $130 for both myself and my daughter's hair plus tip. read more

I had wrote a review for this place a long time ago the day after going to the salon and was overjoyed at first. However it wasn't a week later before that joy turned to sadness. I am editing my review years later because I simply forgot I had a yelp account and don't want to leave false reviews. I went into to get Pravana Vivid Coloring done. I wanted to do a blonde on top and a hot pink under. Alex was very nice and welcomed me in with out a problem. She did mention that they didn't really have any of the colors I wanted but they did have this deep pink. She informed me that it would look awful for me to do the top blond and under pink even thought my hair is this washed out brown color at the time. It took convincing but she talked me out of getting the blonde and pink and just getting the pink. I watched as she began to work on my hair. Placing foil down under the hair and only placing the bleach on the top part of the hair and then folding the rest up into the foil. She did this with every part of my hair that she was going to dye pink. When she washed that part out getting ready to put the dye in I could see the horrible sight of failed bleach orange about half way down the hair. This should have been a sign. She dyed it and didn't even dry it. She "trimmed" my hair and I paid $90 for my hair and another $60 or so for the special shampoo and conditioner. Now I understand that bright colors don't last long and I was following her instructions to the letter. This included cold showers. The color washed out almost with in a week. A friend of mine went to get hers done with blue and her hair turned green. She didn't properly divide the hair and the dye got on the rest of her hair so it looked like a spatter paint art project. I would never go to this location again to get my hair done. When i was there four people came in to get touch ups on their hair that had gotten done less than a week before. OVERPRICED. Alex again was very nice but I wish she hadn't talked me out of what i wanted to do. Prices are outrageous. It is a full service salon at least it was the last time I went. I was a walk in to that was a plus to this place. Pros: Nice staff, friendly. Informative. Full Service Salon. Easy to find location. High end products. Beautiful environment. Accepts walk ins. Cons: Over Priced, average cuts that are not worth the price. I want to say Lazy but i think this is a mean way to put it but it just seems like they just don't try. It's as thought they make enough money to not care if they do a good job. Like they think oh they are paying a shit ton even if it looks like shit they will come back and pay us again to fix it. I have been going to Salon 51 for about three years. Stacey is my stylist and she is exceptional. She was recommended by my friends, and they were right. She colors and cuts my hair, after listening to what I want done or changed. The biggest game changer was when she recommended the Brazilian Smoothing treatment. I was complaining about how frizzy my past-the-shoulders hair was becoming, even though the regular trims kept me from getting split ends. The only time I had smooth hair was when I left the salon after her blow dry. (It took too long for me to obtain a smooth look myself.) And I was just looking for smooth, not bone straight hair. She explained that as I was getting more gray hair, the texture of my hair was changing - the grays were more wiry even though her awesome color services kept the grays from showing. I had the Brazilian Smoothing service and it is the best thing I've ever splurged on. Projected to keep hair smooth for about 3 months, the process lasts for about 6 months for me. I no longer spend ANY time on blow drying!! I can even let it air dry and I end up with shiny smooth hair. I highly recommend Stacey and Salon 51. read more

This was my first time coming here.. I desperately needed someone to fix my hair. I went to a previous salon where I had asked for a light brown shade for my hair and instead the lady turned it orange. I didnt want deal with it so I left it alone. When Jenny saw my hair she was so confused looking at the color but she took me in right away! Lissa took over and I just want to say.. LISSA YOU ARE AMAZING! she had so much patience especially with the fact that I have thick, long, orange hair!! Now my hair is a nice chocolatey brown with a tint of red. I also like my hair very much and will return. As far as actual salon prices go, Salon 51's prices are fair. I have long hair, which usually means it costs a lot extra for coloring. At Salon 51, I received full highlights, a haircut, and blowout for $96. (I researched other salons - not cheapy chains like Hair Cuttery - and saw charges between $50 and $80 just for the haircut!) Let me tell you she did an amazing job and I couldn't of felt more beautiful on my special day. Alex did my makeup after which was flawless as well. I also had one of my flower girls, 2 bride maids, my moh and multiple guests get their hair and makeup done at salon 51 for my wedding. I have gone to Mario Tricocci's for 10 years until a friend of mine suggested I try Salon 51. What I noticed is that Salon 51 is way more reasonably priced and the stylists actually suggest and care about their performance and the way you look. I read a few of the negative remarks about the Salon and although everyone's entitled to your own opinion I strongly disagree with your comments. I was a 10+ year Mario Tricoci Michigan Avenue client and needed something closer to home and more reasonably priced. I have found this salon to be very pleasant and I simply cannot say enough about the talent - specifically Alex. She does great color AND gives a fantastic cut. I find her to be very collaborative in her consultations which is much appreciated. She knows MY hair and MY lifestyle and is not just giving me the "cut of the month." I love Salon 51, and Sandy is the best! I used to go to Gallery of Hair like most people in the neighborhood until I just couldn't deal with the place anymore. A friend recommended Salon 51 to me a couple of years ago, and I have been going there ever since. The people who work there are so much friendlier, I have never had to make an appointment more than two weeks in advance, and I have never been forced to wait around for my appointment, and the atmosphere is so much more comfortable.
