As a student, I found myself in a conundrum when I wanted to donate my hair to a charity that can make it into wigs for low-income cancer patients who cannot afford the high cost of a wig. The tricky thing is, most haircuts here for hair as long as mine costs $80+. I called around a few hair salons to see if they could offer some sort of affordable pricing or discount for me to donate the hair, and was shocked and deeply touched when Pio of Italy said they would do it for FREE. Kathy cut my hair with the utmost sincerity and care, spending over an hour cutting each layer and communicating with me to ease my anxiety of parting with my long hair. Along the way, we talked about how she had come across owning the salon when the former owner, Pio, sold it to her after she had worked at the salon for over 15 years. The price of the salon? $1. In that moment, it was clear to me that Pio had made the right decision for somebody who was clearly passionate, dedicated to serving others, and sincere about caring for their clients and for the broader community. At the end of the haircut, I asked Kathy if I could at the very least tip her for her time, since she was not charging me for donating the hair. Three times, she insisted that there was no charge. I felt so touched and hope that someday I can also pay forward her generosity and dedication to others. Kathy, I hope your salon continues to thrive! The woman who cut my hair seemed clueless about cutting mens hair, was very hesitant and clumsy, and left my hair a sloppy mess. I vowed not to return, no matter how low the price. Then some months later, someone close to me told me that they'd basically turned over the entire initial crew, and that the people working there are much more capable. In addition, they'd continued to advertise very inexpensive cuts, so I decided to go back. Glad I did. The woman who cut my hair clearly was experienced and gave me a nice, neat cut. Now, make no mistake, this isn't a cut on the level of say Phil's in downtown New Haven -- there's little blending of the sides, my neck wasn't shaved with a razor, and she didn't do a great job around my ears. At the promotional price I paid, it was still a no-brainer. At its regular price of $14, it's still a decent deal. As a comparable, this cut was as easily as good as what I recently got at Sports Clips in Milford, where the regular price is $19 and they're pushing washes hard so you're likely to be paying something like $22+ tip. I've returned one more time since, and I again got a solid cut (though not quite as good as last time). Still, I'm going to give 4 stars -- solid cuts, friendly service, and good prices.

All went perfectly and our hours coordinate best with my in home client schedule. I am now booked through June. The salon is very neat as well as a a nice place to just unwind with coffee, tea or water in a clean self service area. It is quiet, female run and offers a relaxing atmosphere. I have seen patrons of all ages to include male clients and golden age ladies as well. I love the privacy of the shampoo room. That is very important to me with an immaculate rest room. Look no further for excellence and a unique salon with quick parking with a very inexpensive meter app. The salon is in a unique area of New Haven known as westville.
