*****SCAM ALERT*****…read more Don't fall for the lies/misleading information from Valdez Northern New Mexico Hunting Adventures in Mora, New Mexico. I learned a very expensive lesson in regards to guides this week. I went hunting in Mora New Mexico with Valdez Northern New Mexico Hunting Adventures. The fully guided hunt cost $5750 which included tags for a bull elk, mule deer buck and cow elk. Plus the money for paying the state of New Mexico for licenses and travel expenses/gear. I spoke with him on the phone multiple times regarding the trip and got a good feeling. Boy was I wrong. He said all the right things we only shoot bulls over 300 inches. Sent pictures of previous bulls taken. He also said because I was a disabled veteran that he would throw in the buck tag for free as well as discount the cow tag for my fiancé. WORST HUNTING EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. I basically paid for an overpriced guided hiking trip with nice scenery. We only hunted about 4 hours a day. He told us that he had access to dozens and dozens of ranches. We hunted 2 properties the whole time. He kept saying it was too cold to go and hunt. I told him we were prepared for cold and wanted to go and sit. He also said he was not a licensed outfitter in the state of New Mexico due to having to pay a portion of all his hunts to the state. When confronted about the issues with the hunt he basically said you can leave if you don't like it. This list could go on and on about the issues. Do a simple background check on this guy and you'll see his history. Also a simple google search will prove that a lot of others have had the same issue. *****UPDATE****** This guy is going to say whatever makes him sound the best. So my recommendation to anyone considering him is to pay $6 for a background check and look at the amount of times he's been arrested and faced felony charges to include assault, theft, child endangerment and the list goes on and on. That right there says a lot about someone character. Don't believe me do a google image search for his name and mugshot and a lot will come up. I have nothing to gain by anyone finding out the hard way that this guy is a crook and will lie about everything.

The ribs were perfect, tender with a little cheese. Just wished we ordered an extra muffin because they're cheap and delicious. Second night I had a salad with salmon. Loved that they asked how I wanted the salmon cooked. It was prepared perfectly. Our server, Marissa, was amazing, frequently checking in on us, and even arranging a free dessert. If I lived in Santa Fe I'd need to buy a new wardrobe. The vibe was bustling, I liked that the booth tables were slightly elevated; solid bbq joint atmosphere.

We had two large parties sitting on both sides of us, so it was a bit noisy but not too loud to where we could still hear each other. I did notice one couple asked to be reseated onto the patio. Started off with their apple - walnut salad - delicious. Then the flat iron steak which had to be one of the most flavorful and tender flat iron steaks I've ever tasted. We also had the ranch salad with a skewer of the brown butter bbq shrimp. Would love to know how they made the brown butter bbq sauce, so good I could drink it. Our food was delicious. The service could have been better. We were never checked on and we had to track down our server to get out check. Literally did not see her for about 15 minutes. Truly thought she may have been on break. I do remember her name, but she could have been super busy. There are so many great restaurants in Santa Fe, but if you're looking for a casual dinner this is the place.

We came across Chef Kualani's page and I am endlessly grateful that we did because the entire process could not have been more perfect. From the very beginning, Kualani was incredibly warm, communicative, and endlessly accommodating. She was open to any requests we had but also came up with the most unbelievable seasonal menu for the dinner (because I had no idea where to start). Dealing with her was a pleasure each and every time and she helped me go through all the details so that nothing was forgotten. And the dinner.... THE DINNER. The food was absolutely incredible. I'm still thinking about her spring pea soup with truffle oil. Every course was fantastic. But Kualani is not just a chef, she is a true hostess. She and her partner Richard came into our AirBnb and handled literally EVERYTHING. She brought beautiful plates and flatware so we didn't have to rely on the AirBnb's stash. She decorated the table. She even made my niece a grilled cheese sandwich while she was prepping. And then, at the end of one of the best meals of my life, they cleaned everything up and left the kitchen better than they found it. Having worked in restaurants and catering for many years, I know first-hand that chefs are not always hospitable. It is a completely different skill set and it's the reason restaurants need a front-of-house staff. But Kualani is the rare exception that is truly capable of curating a perfect evening. She has the most amazing energy and could not have been happier with our entire experience. The dinner absolutely made my mother's birthday and I cannot recommend her highly enough.

My city-mouse friend mentioned that she had always dreamed of petting a horse, so when we drove past an eclectic looking stable with gorgeous horses (seriously looks like something out of a movie), I figured it was worth a shot to see if we could meet the animals. I told my friend, "What's the worst they could say? No?" I parked my car and walked up to what looked like the main building, and I was greeted by a sleepy grey cat and outrageously cute little dog. A man that I presume is the owner followed behind the dog and asked me if I needed help. After pitching my request to him, offering money to let my friend just spend some time visiting the horses, he kindly told me that we were welcome to respectfully walk around for free. He told us we could meet any horse that came up to us, but reminded us to not feed the horses. By the looks of the horses, the man I spoke to clearly cares for these animals deeply, and I was really taken by the cleanliness and health of the horses. In the end, my friend was able to meet a horse for the first time, and my kids loved seeing the beautiful animals. They especially loved the sweet grey cat and inquisitive one-eyed horse. We will definitely be back to schedule a ride here, as I was so impressed by the animals and thankful for the kindness we were shown. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Broken Saddle!

The first part of this review is going to be about the accomedations: First- I will admit that I am not camper. We did not camp- we stayed in a cottage (Pine 3) which was a queen sized bed. The room fit the bed. I'll give it that. The mattress was so smooshy that I thought I was going to slide between the mattress and the headboard. You get three pillows. Two standard and one queen. You also get about 13" of clearance between the corner of the bed frame and a table. My knees hit that black metal bed corner every time. You also get a lot of bugs because none of the screens seem to really fit the windows. The bathroom was spacious and gave you about 17 options as to where to hang your towels which is good as there are no closets. They are upfront about the rooms. There are no phones or TVs or coffee makers (we brought instant coffee that I made with hot tap water and I do not recommend doing that. Something really screwed up my intestines and I suspect it was drinking the tap water) (there is coffee in the dining hall but it doesn't open until 7am -or rather you can generally sneak in there around 7 but breakfast isn't until 7:30am). I have AT&T and my husband has T-Mobile. I had connectivity for the most part- not a strong signal but enough to get through. We ate at the dining hall during our stay. The first night did not set a great tone- the salmon looked like it had been baking for 3 weeks. Initially i thought that was maybe what my stomach was upset about but I am pretty sure it was the tap water. One day there was a salad bar with no greens. Just shredded cheese and cherry tomatoes. And another time there was no iced tea. We also were looking forward to using the pool but nope. Apparently they had no lifeguard so no one was allowed to use the pool which was a huge bummer because we wasted the space to pack for pool use. Overall I would stay somewhere else (there was a cute looking place nearby called the Abiquiu inn) and paying $10 to visit the ranch which is absolutely stunning views and trails. But for the cost of our stay it felt....not worth it.
