Really a 3.5! I'm on…read morethe hunt for this peony that I saw in someone's yard and then again at Fiddler's Green. The Hostess who put out the peony said that she found it at Islandscaping. Yes... so beautiful. I must have it. A Peony of all yellow stamen just puffed together in a big ball in the center with one layer of red petals circling this pom pom of fluff. So I went to Islandscaping. Peonies run from 20-50 dollars. This is very reasonably priced to the point of me thinking about sneaking on one of the more expensive Peony trees onto the plane. Then on second thought, if it wasn't this rare beauty that I wanted to find, then there is no point in that extra toil. So I never found the peony I wanted. There was coffee in the back for a dollar in case you needed your morning fix. On a side story, one of the staff saved a baby bird from a fallen tree and placed it in one of the tubs of bushes. It was so cute and naughty (it would jump out of the nest she put there and run all over asking for buyers to STOMP him!) They named him Spruce (after the tree he fell from) and fed him by hand with the worms they found under the flower pots. So cute. Whenever you got close to Spruce, he opened up his big beak and waited for it to be filled with a worm. These people have so much heart.

ORIGIN: James Dickinson started Surry Gardens in 1976,…read moredisplaying perennials along his driveway, and selling plants from his root cellar. The owner to this day, Surry Gardens now encompasses five acres. CONCEPT: Surry Gardens sells a wide selection of perennials, house plants, trees, shrubs, and annuals, with an eye towards selling varieties that are uncommonly found. Landscaping services, advice, garden tools, and amendments are also available, making Surry Gardens a one stop shop experience for residents of mid-coastal Maine. EXPERIENCE: Those who have followed my earlier reviews will know I am a frequent garden center visitor, and do travel up and down western Connecticut in order to access uncommonly seen varieties of plants and shrubs. Surry Gardens is always on my destination wish list when vacationing in Maine because of the unique collection the owner and employees have curated and cultivated. I'm not alone in doing do, as Martha Stewart, who owns a home in the region, periodically pens reference to her own Surry Garden visits and uncommon finds. I myself can report here that during my last visit I was happy to bring "Marmalade" and "Tomato Soup" coneflowers into my perennial garden! YELP * COMMENT: My experience has not been anything but positive, and I am bewildered by the high percentage of negative reviews posted by folks without history of submitting any other reviews -- neither before nor since. (Before I reviewed 50% rated low). Yelp usually flags these as questionable. TIPS: Customers of Surry Gardens receive "Green Stamps" for their purchases, which can be applied towards designated "Green Card" items at the the end of the growing season. Mid-summer sales also allow frugal and patient customers to acquire plants at discounted prices, with additional discounts through coupons found in local Ellsworth American newspaper (example attached). Since 1976 James Dickinson has prepared and distributed catalogs each season. Now also digitally available on the gardens' website, the catalog helps customers plan or dream based on what is readily available. Coordinating a visit with neighboring Pugnuts for ice cream may make the excursion more agreeable to fellow travelers when, in your mind, you are within a reasonable drive to Surry Gardens!

The owners are both sweet and what you would expect from down east Maine couple. For blueberry picking it is bet to call ahead to ensure that someone is home. I forgot to call the day before so when no one answered the phone in my way over I was chancing whether they would be around. What luck! They were home, working tirelessly on the conveyor belt that is in their old garage. When I parked my car I was greeted by an old black lab ( I have a huge soft spot for black labs). I greeted him with head pats and ear scratches. The wife approached me and I asked if I could rake some blueberries. She said I could and went to get her husband to have him bring me to a good spot. I was given an overview of how to rake since it had been a year since I last visited their farm. When left to my own devices, I took in the quiet surroundings, the smell of blueberries, and the soft breeze coming over the large field of berries. What tranquility! I began my raking with first novice representation and soon starting to feel like an old pro. It doesn't take a lot to get the hang of it. In about 40 minutes or less I had picked two flats worth. I pulled my wagon over to the garage where the fun part began. The husband lugged the flats to the top of the conveyor belt. My instructions were to stand at the lower part and pick out the stems and gross stuff closer to me. After one round we took the ones on the far end and did it again. I enjoyed being a big part of all the processes which also helped the price(big fan of that). I had brought my own containers, so I didn't have pint boxes or too many ziplock bags bumping around in my car, which was a huge help and I recommend. Everyone must go here! Such a wonderful experience that I have made into an annual event.
