I'll be honest--walking into a new dental office made me a little nervous, but Darci (the assistant) was so warm and welcoming. She gave me a quick little tour and totally helped ease my nerves. It honestly felt like visiting a friend's office! Dr. Goldman was amazing--super knowledgeable and took the time to go over everything with me. She even complimented the onlays and veneers I had done previously, which made me feel like she really noticed the details. AJ, my hygienist, was also fantastic. He was so professional and made me feel completely at ease while taking my oral records. He asked thoughtful questions about my dental habits and even gave me a few helpful flossing tips I hadn't heard before. Plus, the office is beautiful and fully equipped with modern technology and little touches that remind me of my old dentist's place (which I loved). I am so sad I have to change my review. I had some work done recently that continues to cause me problems. I had zero discomfort or pain before I had to work done. I've had to go back in twice since having the work done to be checked out. The first time they corrected my bite and the dentist re- drilled to correct it. The whole time he was drilling the shavings were going to the back of my throat, and I was choking he said oh it's just teeth dust lol Also, most of the reception women are very friendly, but every time I speak to Natalie she is so rude and seems like she hates her job. Once I get this problem corrected, I will not be returning to Salinas valley Dental care, sadly. I feel like the staff is overwhelmed because they're taking them more patients than they can handle. My daughter had dental work done at this office that was expected to last at least five years, according to our dental insurance, but it failed in less than one year. When the work fell out, I contacted the office to let them know there was a problem. Because we had since moved out of state and our insurance would not cover the repair, I asked what options might be available. I was told the only way they would address the issue was if I returned to their office in California so they could examine it themselves. Unfortunately, flying back to California would have cost as much as simply paying to have the repair done by a dentist where I now live. I also asked for the dentist who performed the work to call me back, but I never received a call. The lack of follow-through and unwillingness to stand behind their work was very disappointing. I have been a patient in this practice before Dr. Chao moved to this location. Routine visits are something I firmly believe in. Until retirement I have had dental insurance. Today I showed up for my regular prophy and exam and was told I "needed all x-rays" (including a panorex). I explained we have had some significant unexpected expenses and would prefer to have x-rays at my next visit and instead have only the cleaning and exam today. After checking "with the back" I was told they would not be able to clean my teeth unless I had the x-rays and did I want to reschedule. What happened to the "patient centered practice"? Sometimes the patient has circumstances and has to make choices. My choice was to have the cleaning and exam and postpone x-rays until my next visit. Their choice was all or nothing. I know every practice has daily production goals and so today, they chose zero production for that hour of the hygienists time and turned me away because of their unbendable rules. My care was clearly not their priority. That is such a red flag!! No production and two patients lost (my husband had a previous treatment issue) and let's not forget the power of a review and word of mouth. read more

Scheduling is difficult, like what I recently experienced, I already confirmed my schedule then, they would leave you a message on your voicemail that they changed the schedule you just confirmed, and if you missed that message of theirs, it's your fault ( the patient), as if people have nothing else to do but stair at their smartphone all day. Could it be that they are becoming the SouthWest of dental practices?? Unfortunately that seems to be the case: I just had my regular cleaning appointment suddenly changed due to their own scheduling (or over scheduling) practices through a text reading "We apologize for the inconvenience there was a slight change in the hygienist's schedule. Your appointment will be moved up to ---on {---} -Salinas Valley Dental Care." These are appointments made 6 months or more in advance and to suddenly changed them without regard to their patient's own life and work schedules is insulting, showing a total lack of care. I called to see if they could keep my appointment as is or see me at a time that would not interfere with work commitments they expressed being completely booked for the foreseeable future. This is an appointment that had already been postponed since the summer. I became a patient at the height of the pandemic in July 2020, actively recommending friends, family and coworkers. At the time, they were just starting and showed a level of quality and care that was appreciated--it was also evident that they clearly needed more clients/patients. It's unfortunate that they have traded quality of care values for higher volume of people, churning services factory-style. It may be time to find a practice that values their patients and does not reschedule last minute due to their neglectful scheduling practices. read more

I went to Salinas Valley Dental Care because my previous dentist sold his practice and the new provider didn't take my insurance. My first cleaning last September went great. The cleaning was just like I had always experienced so I made an appointment for my next cleaning. Jump ahead six months to the next cleaning (mind you I am authorized a cleaning every four months but they didn't have an opening until then, but ok). I got a different hygienist named Candace. She seemed a little distracted, very busy talking into her earpiece, but friendly, at least initially. Then the cleaning started and she was using the ultrasonic cleaning tool. She started with the most sensitive portion of my mouth and it felt like I was getting zapped. I have crowns on the majority of my molars with a some gum recession in a few places. So, I jumped in pain and asked her -- nicely -- not to use the tool on that area of my mouth, that it made me really uncomfortable and hurt like heck. She offered to put numbing gel on the area, but I couldn't imagine that helping much, not to mention I was already tense from the first zap of pain, so knew I wasn't going to relax with that tool no matter what. Her response to my request completely lacked compassion. Her body language and tone became very terse and stiff and I interpreted all that as me inconveniencing her "routine". She began scraping my teeth, which was fine with me as that was the kind of cleaning I was used to, but she was very rough, haphazard, and at one point in her haste, the tool slipped and she stabbed me causing me to bleed. And get this: she didn't even apologize. (I don't normally bleed; I have exceptionally healthy gums.) Throughout the shortest cleaning I ever experienced -- 20 minutes from start to finish of a crappy polishing job -- I just wanted to get up and walk out. I mean, I kept thinking how I took time off work for this appointment and I was being treated so disrespectfully. Afterward, I told one of the office managers how rude and disrespectful Candace was and she apologized, but that was it. No call back to reassure me it had been dealt with or to check how I was doing or if I wanted to schedule the crown they said I needed. I waited two months to write this because I didn't want to write it while I was so angry, but none of that has worn off. These people couldn't pay me to return to that practice. They really need to work on their patient service/people skills. read more

I have been a patient with Dr Chao starting about 9 years ago. Two appointments at least every year. His business expanded and I didn't get to see him after a couple years. Despite not seeing him I was willing to keep my care there even though my coverage was at 80%. I could have looked for another dentist my insurance covered at 90%. I was bombarded with multiple texts to confirm appointments. After confirming the appointment the texts still continued. I asked them to no longer text me. After waiting up to 6 months in between cleanings I had told them that my making the appointment was my confirmation I was coming. They must have had a policy change because I got a couple calls the day before the cleaning asking to confirm. I was able to reply about 2:30 that same day for a next day 3:15 appointment. They informed me my appointment was cancelled and I needed to reschedule. I showed up the next day to speak to a manager and got one of the front desk employees telling me that I would have gotten a no show fee if I missed my appointment. How do they charge a no show fee if they cancel the time anyway. I will not be returning. Nobody called me back when I expressed that I was upset they gave the time away. I work in the medical field. I allow patients to still get care even if late. Everyone puts in effort to be there and sometimes things happen. They didn't even give me the chance. read more

I have Delta Dental. They say that they accept it. They are even listed as a Provider on the Delta Dental website. I waiting 2+ months for an appointment. Prior to my appointment they contacted me to verify my insurance. They supposedly could not get verification from Delta. I was asked 3 times what my birthday was. I sent them my insurance card twice. They still could not verify and would possibly cancel my long awaited appointment if they couldn't verify my insurance. So... I beat them to it. I called another Dentist. That office immediately verified with Delta and received all of my benefit info... and due to the long wait I had with Salinas Valley Dental, this private and popular dentist told me he would make the time to see me in 2 weeks at the end of the day even though they'd need to stay late. I thanked him and immediately cancelled my appointment with Salinas Valley Dental who had threatened to cancel my appointment since they couldn't verify my Delta Dental insurance. I went here after returning to the area and not having a dentist. The first visit was a joke, in that I was in the office for 2.5 hrs. The staff takes you on a "tour" of the facility, showing you everything short of the toilet, which is a waste of time. The service was subpar at best. They require up front payment of any service that you will have. At no point did they state I would be charged $100 for not cancelling 48 hours in advance, but when I called in 24 hours before the appt this is when I was told this information and that my prepayment for dental service would go towards the cancellation charge. I guess I have to call my insurance for these people falsely taking money from patients claiming it's for dental services and find another dental practice to go to for services read more

Overall it's the most professional and clean dentist I've visited. The staff is really kind and attentive. Their availability for appointments is great, too. They always offer to give me a toothpaste and toothbrush prior to my visits when I'm rushing in from work after my lunch, and feeling self conscious about not brushing my teeth before. Good dentist! I have been coming here for over a year for my Invisalign. I love that I can come in on a Saturday because I have three kids, so it's hard to get in on weekdays for me. I am also always promptly seen - never have waited more than 5-10 min in the lobby, and usually no wait once I'm in a room. I am nearing the end stages of my treatment, and my teeth are looking great so far. The office staff is friendly and quick as well. My one minor complaint is that I had to basically pay for the Invisalign all up front (was allowed to split in to two payments a few months apart, but that was difficult since that was basically over two grand a payment). It would have been nice to have a monthly payment plan, like I was able to do for my daughter's Invisalign through her pediatric dentist. It would have made things a lot easier and more affordable. The staff and doctors are personable and they have tried hard to set up their offices for comfort. However - the "tour" at the first visit should have alerted me that I was at a money making factory not a family dentist. They made sure to slip in every possible billable charge - I don't think I've ever had so many X-rays in one day! They twice quoted me for services after "checking with my insurance" and twice were totally incorrect - resulting in $400+ of unexpected out of pocket expenses. Beyond that - the crown they placed is still painful over 4 months after the procedure! I have never had so much pain in a tooth for so long after work was done. What a shame. I called as a new patient Friday night, met with Dr. Bui at 10:30 Saturday morning and Dr. Makan extracted my tooth and performed a bone graft at 2:30. I called their on-call doctor Sunday night when I was concerned with some swelling and a spike in pain, but Dr. Chao set me at ease asking me to come in first thing Monday morning. I wish I would have found them sooner. Love how the minute you step in the receptionist greet you and attend to you, the wait is very short, the dental hygienist are very patient and thorough as well as the dentists. They make sure to explain things in a manner patients will understand. They also make you feel comfortable with different options so your anxiety of being at the dentists can be minimal. For example, they can offer you a stress ball to squeeze on, watch Netflix, listen to music, administer laughing gas, and more. This is a chop shop with no regard for patient safety or comfort, they caused an anoxic seizure and did not even call an ambulance. First I spent 2 hours drowning because the dental hygienist only suctions "on request." I said that is not what I'm used to, usually suction happens throughout a procedure and they shrugged it off. I choked, gasped, and winced several times, the Dr kept giving me more lidocaine without me knowing. I started to shake and feel jittery, possibly too much lidocaine. Too much lidocaine can cause cardiac issues and I have a history that they were aware of. The equipment was very uncomfortable. Their nitrous was not working. Their drill was so loud that it was painful and my ears were ringing. So many terrible tasting fluids were filling my mouth, I've never had anything like that happen. I have had fillings, root canals, crowns... I don't know if they get their supplies from Tijuana but everything tasted disgusting and I had to ask to rinse instead of them offering. They made me feel demanding when asking for basic care. I felt like the Dr. was scraping my lip and mouth unnecessarily and I think I have abrasions. I asked about how much longer after choking again because no one was suctioning, and he said he could not stop the bleeding and couldn't keep going yet. Then he showed me pictures with no warning, and I do believe I disclosed at intake a history of vasovagal syncope with pain/blood being the trigger. All the shaking turned into an anoxic seizure/vasovagal syncope. I said I'm going to have a seizure and tried to lay on the floor and they wouldn't let me! I got myself to the floor anyway and had a seizure and briefly lost consciousness. I could hear someone say "she's still breathing" but no one called an ambulance. They behaved chaotically and the Dr was very unprofessional, blaming the condition of my tooth, but my last dental appt was not very long ago and this was not the worst cavity I've had to deal with (pregnancy severely impacted my teeth). I think he was unskilled and made a mistake and was trying to cover it up. He acted like he couldn't stop the bleeding until I said I was leaving then he said he had stopped it. If felt very dishonest. My husband came and got me and now I have to seek emergency dental care to fix whatever they did. Once I wasn't numb I was in so much pain, worse than a root canal or an extraction. Run from this office, they only care about appearances, not quality dental care. read more
