What a difference a few years makes. I can no longer recommend this eye doctor. The doctor himself is still ok, maybe the last few years were tough since he's a bit short (crankier?) , but he still does all his steps. The problem is not just that the formerly pleasant doctor is less pleasant, but that his front desk is now a total mess. None of his staff seem to be happy to work there, which can be representative of the working conditions there or pay. Not sure what is going on, but the below is the result of it: Trying to schedule an appointment? Have to manage getting through first. Better yet just show up in person because someone answering the phone is completely hit or miss. Paying? DOUBLE check what you are being billed for line by line. There were multiple billing mistakes, and none in my favor. This is my biggest beef. Fine, maybe your service has slipped, but if your service is less and you want to slip in charges? That is an absolute no. Finally get through that painful experience with a prescription? Sure, a prescription with an expired prescription date! Wow that was fun to sort out while waiting in Costco! Like literally at this point I'm questioning if even the lens power is correct on my prescription...my eyes didn't change much but they did change. Well, now that I thought of that I better go see if I can wade through that and figure it out. read more

I moved from a city where eye care was primarily from one company with different locations. This doctor and eye care place are a revelation! The doctor is so knowledgeable and able to explain everything in layman's terms. He is passionate about what he does and his patients. The front desk staff are always helpful. I had been having blurriness in one of my eyes and just moved here from LA and hadn't chosen a new eye doctor yet. I searched all over Yelp in both Corvallis/Albany (where I reside) and Salem where my parents live. I found Dr. Huggett had great reviews, so I called to set an appointment. I was worried about my blurry eye, so called back the next day and they were able to accommodate me sooner due to a cancellation. The location was easy to find and There is parking in the back. There was a sign on the door stating that they are seeing people with appointments only and they are not open for eyeglasses browsing due to Covid. When I went in I was immediately greeted and my temperature taken. The employees were masked and there were decals on the floor to keep social distancing. I was provided with paperwork (first visit), including one form assessing my Covid risk and general well being in case the need for contact tracing should arise. There was hand sanitizer available for after I was done using the pen. I was promptly seen by the technician, who used all the new equipment to get the photos of the interior of my eyes, test my eye pressure, etc. then I was placed in an exam room to meet with the doctor. Dr Huggett came in and was tightly masked. He was extremely friendly and listened to my concerns. He went over the results of my exams and then did my eye exam for my glasses. He is definitely very educated in the health of the eye and in addition to his practice, participates in outside consulting/research...wish I could remember exactly what he said about this, but he is highly focused on the medical side of his field. Because of this, he was able to break down everything that was going on with my eyes, what to look for, what to be concerned about and not be concerned about, and how to keep my eyes healthy. The entire exam was a tremendous bargain without insurance and it was the most thorough exam I've ever had. I was assisted by friendly staff in choosing my frames and lenses for my new glasses. But what I really appreciated was that the doctor told me that he was most concerned with the health of my eyes and gave me every blessing to purchase glasses wherever I wanted. So even though they have a large selection of frames, the hard sale wasn't there and that was so refreshing. I did end up choosing a frame and ordering new glasses. I am usually pretty flamboyant with my glasses, and although I was able to find some everyday frames here, I do wish they had some over the top cat eyes. But honestly that is my only critique. Overall my first visit here was excellent and I plan to keep coming back. I would definitely recommend Dr.Huggett to my friends and family. I also greatly appreciate their Covid protocol as well. read more

He took the time to explain to me about how the eye functions and how that applies to my vision. He did a complete exam including dilation and I never felt like he was rushing through it. I have been to quite a few eye doctors in my life. I've never found one worth being loyal to until Dr. Huggett! I first had an experience with his awesomeness a few years back when I randomly went into LensCrafters in Salem. He was working there at the time. When I went back the next year her was gone and I had some not-as-awesome Dr. Fast. I decided to look for Dr. Huggett to see if he had opened a practice - he had! It's such a cute little office on Commercial street right where liberty street and commercial street start to merge into just commercial street (cross street is Superior.) They share a building with a law firm. Dr. Hugget is so friendly! I swear the guy is always happy and positive. His energy is contagious and just nice to be around. His receptionist, Emily, I believe, totally knows her stuff. (I'm going to feel so bad if I got her name wrong, because she is just so fantastic at her job!) The doctor seriously wants to get your prescription right. If you aren't satisfied, come back in. Some lenses can be back to you in just a couple of days. They have a good selection of frames and do offer contact lenses. I have my husband and my mother hooked on Huggett!! read more

I went here to look at frames first. The staff were very friendly and helpful even thou I was only looking. I found frames I really liked. I discussed pricing and the fact I had no insurance. I was offered 20% off for paying cash on my frames. Which was better than full price. I came back a few weeks later to look again. I made an appointment then. My eye exam was very detailed. Dr Kautz was friendly and experienced. I ordered my frames they arrive in one week! This is the best prescription I've had in years very shape clear vision for the first time in years. I did any upgrade on the harder lenses Crizal with no glare/scratch/crisp vision. I love me new glasses! read more

I went to this eye doctor to remove some skin tags off of my eyelids. I thought the $10 copay would cover this quick procedure. Boy, was I wrong! Each eyelid was billed as surgery totaling $400 for each eyelid. I was aghast when I found nothing was covered. I wished he would have told me before having this procedure done. It seems he also knew this would happen because He scheduled each eyelid 1 week from each other, which isn't enough time to get the bill! NEVER going back there. read more

THEN a friend recommended Dr. Darek Huggett in Salem, OR. "SALEM!" I complained. "I'm not driving 50 miles to Salem for glasses" My friend assured me I wouldn't regret it. So I made an appointment and.... I FOUND MY EYE DOCTOR! I did not know eye exams could be so high tech and exhaustive. Dr. Huggett checked EVERYTHING! He treated me as if he really cares because he does care. BUT THAT WAS JUST THE BEGINNING!!!! After the exam his staff took over. They not only have an incredible amount of product knowledge, but an excellent sense of style. With thousands of frames to choose from, they helped find the perfect frames within my budget. After a very disappointing experience with the huge eye exam place on Liberty Street I found Dr. Huggett. Below are just a few bullet points comparing the two places: Liberty Street: * Waited 15 minutes to meet with doctor for scheduled exam. * Notified front desk that I had a scheduled appointment and I expected to be helped immediately after waiting 8 minutes beyond scheduled time. No assurances I would be helped as requested. * Left after waiting 15 minutes informing front desk not to bill me. No follow-up from Doctor or company to apologize for keeping me waiting and missing scheduled time. Dr. Huggett: * Was able to meet with me on a Saturday to provide eye exam. * Dr. Huggett was punctual, professional, personable, and very thorough during the eye exam. * Dr Huggett's staff was very pleasant. * I am very pleased with the prescription provided by Dr. Huggett. In short I plan on visiting Dr. Huggett and his staff for future eye exams. Based on my experience between Dr Huggett and Liberty Street I much prefer Dr. Huggett. read more

One of the worst experiences I have had with office staff. Don't get me wrong, the actual dr was fantastic. Very thorough and left me feeling like I mattered, and my vision was important to him. But by and large the WORST office staff I have ever had the displeasure of "working" with. I told them I would go with contacts, and I was already without glasses because they broke. I really needed something. They said they would call me when the contacts arrived, and did I want to pay for the fitting at the exam or when the contacts arrived. I chose the latter. That was Sept 24th. I called them on Oct 19th and no word on the contacts. I still cannot see and I'm thinking at this time...what's going on? I finally called them again on Dec 4th desperate for glasses, so I need them to send me my rx so I can order some on my own. they tell me that I can come in and get glasses there. I mention the bill they sent me for the contacts that never arrived. They insist it's for the contact fitting appt, which I remind them I never had them call me to tell me they had arrived. So they said they will take care of it (after a 15 min hold). I go in for my appt on the following Monday, order my glasses, and on my drive back to work (which, by the way, I was coming from Eugene because I had moved the day I had my initial exam with them) they called and told me they were keeping the billing for the fitting appt. Mind you, at this point they still haven't offered me the contacts. I'm thinking they just forgot them? didn't arrive? and I tell them I'm not paying for something I never received. Then she tries telling me she called AND left a vm on Nov 16. (when my appt had been on sept 24!!) and I tell her no, I have no vm nor do I have any missed calls from their office. She says "I can't speak for other individuals" to which I respond, I am not talking to an individual, I am talking to an office." She continuously interrupted me to the point of tears and I told her, do you want to solve the problem or do you want to keep going around and around? and she said "THE PROBLEM WOULD BE RESOLVED IF YOU WOULD PAY THE $36" like really?? I said, I never had a call to come get them and I'm not paying for that. and she has the audacity to say "I've already repeated myself once but I'll repeat myself once more" and at that point I hung up. 5 min later this office that couldn't even call me to get my contacts, called me AGAIN. So this time it's the "office manager" and I tell her I am really upset but I realize she isn't the one I just hung up with so I will try to not take it out on her. and she says "I was asked to explain to you what's going on" and I'm like??? I know what is going on, yall are trying to charge me for an appt yall failed to make. And I'm not paying for it. I got a bill in the mail for contacts I am not wearing. And she keeps interrupting me so I tell her "please don't interrupt me, that's what the other girl did. It's really rude, and besides, it's customer service. Please don't." She interrupts me AGAIN! so I tell her just to cancel my rx for the glasses and I'll reach out to my insurance regarding the charge for the contacts. Amazing that they'll call me twice in a morning for a bill but they can't let me know my contacts had arrived. They are incredibly rude. read more

Dr. Huggett was great and very thorough. The office staff in explaining your benefits were horrible! Then when trying to get a straight answer about the total of the bill after your willing to pay the full price, are clueless as to a correct answer. I am not sure going back to a great Dr. will be worth the hassle of his office staff. read more
