My husband and I went here recently for the first time when we were out of town. I'm guessing it's a favorite for many of the local community members because the restaurant got very full while we were there. We both enjoyed our main entrées and would give them a four. My husband got the Udon Noodle with triple meat and he liked it very much. I got the Teriyaki Scallops and Shrimp with white rice . They actually did a very good job with their white rice, it wasn't sticky as I've had before at other restaurants and I enjoyed the Hibachi Teriyaki flavoring that went along with my main entrée. I did like the scallops, they were fairly good, but I did not enjoy the shrimp . I believe the shrimp was overcooked, and it tasted chewy, but outside of that, I enjoyed my meal. I did like my Egg Drop Soup and ate all of that and my husband thought his Miso Soup was OK, it was a new flavor for him. I did get a nonalcoholic Pina Colada Smoothie, which I did not get a picture of, and I would give it a strong 4 1/2, maybe a five 5. It was really good and I would order it again. Our waitress was very nice and also funny, it was a nice touch for our experience there.

My hibachi shrimp on the left, fork in the middle, and the ROCK from my food in the upper right.

I had a pickup order this evening at 6:32 pm scheduled by their online ordering system. It cost $32 before tax and tip. I checked in at the window at 6:30 and pulled to spot 1. They brought out my food at 6:47. All of the food - hibachi shrimp, spring rolls, and deep fried sushi was cold after driving home for 8 minutes. The worst? There was a sweet-pea-size rock in my hibachi food. A rock! Picture attached. Very disappointed. Previous inside service dinners have been good.

Egg drop soup had black spots throughout the egg whites.

We love eating at Sakura. Their teriyaki chicken bento is my go-to, and my husband loves the Mickey Roll. We have not had a bad meal yet!

We started with the jalapeño calamari, which is always so delicious. We also ordered the spicy tuna tartare, and it was incredibly fresh and packed with flavor. I got the hibachi salmon, and it was honestly some of the best salmon I've ever had. My boyfriend ordered the hibachi shrimp, which was also delicious. The rice and noodles were so flavorful--I could honestly just eat those and be completely happy. We also tried the vegetarian lovers sushi combo, which came with a tofu roll, an avocado roll, and a cucumber roll. Everything was very fresh and super tasty. Another great experience, and it's no surprise that we'll definitely be going back!

Let me tell you about our first rodeo at Shiki…read more We pulled up excited, walked in... and I ain't gonna lie -- the place looked a little drab. Not "health department issue" drab, just "could use a fresh coat of paint and a pep talk" drab. I started second-guessing all those glowing reviews like, "Did these folks eat at the same place?" Then came the entrance situation. The host stand was vacant. No "please wait to be seated" sign. Just us standing there like we were about to audition for a sushi commercial. So we start to seat ourselves when the lone waiter -- and I mean lone ranger -- glances over and says, "Just a minute." Oh. Copy that. We did the walk of shame right back to the door and waited properly this time. After sitting a spell, he got to us and took our order. Now bless his heart -- that man was running ragged. Every table was full and he appeared to be handling the whole dining room solo. Plates, drinks, orders, probably washing dishes in the back too. We waited... and waited... and waited. It was pushing 30 minutes before the food finally touched down. Now let's talk about the decor. The inside could use some TLC. Maybe a little facelift. Maybe some brighter lighting. Maybe a plant that's alive. But hear me clearly: What the front of house is missing, the chef in the back is absolutely making up for. From the first bite of that ginger salad to the last grain of rice, I started wondering if I'd accidentally walked into an episode of Iron Chef. That salad was crisp and fresh, the soup was on point, and then my salmon hibachi showed up like it had something to prove. And let me tell you -- that salmon was spectacular. Cooked just right. Flavorful. Tender. Seasoned like somebody back there cares deeply about their craft. That chef can flat-out throw down on the grill. Great food. Great flavor. Zero complaints about what hit the plate. Price? Outstanding. Party of two ate for under $50 at a sit-down restaurant -- and that's including a 30% tip. In this economy? That's practically a public service. So here's where I land: (4 out of 5 stars) If service had been quicker, we'd be talking five stars without hesitation. But I'm giving grace here because that waiter looked like he was one espresso away from levitating, and the place was packed -- which, by the way, is usually the surest sign the food's top-notch. We'll be back. And next time, we'll walk in with patience... and maybe a snack in our pocket just in case. Bottom line: Don't judge this book by its cover. The outside may whisper "meh," but the kitchen is singing hallelujah.

The restaurant wasn't crowded at all, which made for a quiet and easygoing meal. The sushi itself was just okay... nothing particularly memorable, but it satisfied the craving. Service was smooth and timely, likely helped by the lighter crowd. Overall, a decent spot if you're looking for a low-key lunch without the wait, but the food didn't quite stand out compared to other sushi spots in the area

I…read morehave lived in the Birmingham Metro area the majority of my life and love trying new places, so when my son spotted this place on a shopping trip to Publix and asked if we could go try it out I said yes (if he was a well-behaved boy at school lol). Luckily for us, he was today. It's location being over the parking deck is probably why I didn't notice it and I was nervous about how accessible it would be however there were two solid ways to get there either from the street or parking deck so that proved to be no issue at all. It has both indoor and outdoor seating with cute decor all over the inside. I've never been to Japan but one could imagine this gave its all to emulate the feel of a cool Japanese city restaurant. There's a cocktail bar on the right, sushi bar to the left, and good seating in the middle. Maybe large parties would be hard to seat upon reflection but I'm sure it's doable. The menus we received were EXTENSIVE. So many sushi and nigiri options were available it was almost overwhelming but they also gave us a paper selection for sushi that went into detail of the chef specials. But don't worry, they had other options including various soups, salads, appetizers (we got the spring rolls, YUM. My son devoured them), and hibachi style dishes. We decided to get the Udon with shrimp and veggies, Osaka roll, and Vestavia roll. Genuinely, you can taste the love and care. My son actually closed his eyes and sighed when he dived into the noodles dish and was enamored with the Vestavia roll (did I mention he's six?? Seriously, that reaction from a six year old means they're doing something right!). I also was beyond impressed with the flavors of it all. I wish I was more hungry so I could get more. Lastly, I want to touch on service. I, myself, am a bartender so service is a big thing for me. I have high expectations because I know how the job should be done. When I tell you these lovely people know how to make you feel at home, goodness. Every customer that came in was warmly greeted and if they were a regular it was like they were coming home. The lovely lady at the front (I want to say was maybe the manager?) was all smiles and running around helping and talking with staff and guests alike. She stopped by our table and chatted with my son and told us she was happy they had "new family members" (LOVE). Our server was phenomenal, even seeing my son was struggling with his chopsticks so he rigged up a pair to be more kid friendly which was great. We were sat facing the sushi bar so we were watching how much care and effort they were putting into each plate. It was a sight to see. This place clearly cares about its patrons from the moment they come in til the moment they leave. The love they put into every dish and interaction should be something you get everywhere. They've set a high bar and I'm happy we got to experience it. I cannot wait to go back. I'm already plotting what I'll try next!
