We came in one day for lunch and it was pretty quiet, we were the only table in there. The cashier/waitress was amazing with all her suggestions since we had never been there before. We started with the pork gyoza for an appetizer and they were amazing! One side is steamed and the other side seemed to be pan seared so you got the best of both worlds. I chose the chicken hibachi and he chose the general tso's chicken. My favorite was definitely my dish but his wasn't bad either. The chicken hibachi is cooked in a light brown sauce, I don't know what it was, but it comes with brown rice and a ton of veggies! Yum! The service was great and the food was even better. I come here every week and it's usually a good experience. Today is the exception. The good: the price is reasonable and the service is generally friendly (though not particularly chatty). The bad: (again I stress, this is today) the sashimi plate is served on a bed of chipped ice with an aquarium plant stuck in it. It makes for an odd presentation. The staff here are so nice and so helpful. They have a great system in place for carry outs during the transition out of quarantine and we appreciated the amazing customer service. The teriyaki beef was great but could have had more broccoli and mushrooms. Overall, the food is really good, but the portions are small compared to most Chinese and Asian restaurants out here. Visiting Bettendorf for a few days and decided to take the family to Sakura Express because of the offerings besides sushi(hibachi, Japanese offerings, etc...) When we arrived there were quite a few people in the restaurant eating and several other waiting to pick up food. We were seated right away and the server was very friendly. We placed our order and the waiter came back a few moments later and told us that they were backed up and out food would take about 30 minutes- we weren't in a rush so we decided to wait. While waiting the brought us a free appetizer or crab Rangoon and after about 45 minutes our food came and it was worth the wait. Sushi was fresh and hibachi was tasty. We had to other people come and apologize about the wait and they took 10% off our bill even though they didn't have too. This restaurant did everything right and turned a negative into a positive!! If you are in Bettendorf give them a try you won't be disappointed. read more

When I eat their sushi and don't send it back I realize I've been in the Quad Cities too long! Having spent 30 years of my life in Japan I should be scared to eat the less than fresh mushy textured fish! The people are nice and friendly but definitely not experts in sushi! I have gone back to Sakura Express a few times in the last couple of months and am pleased that quality has improved since it first opened... The rice dishes are all very good and I have had good luck with the sushi. I have tried sashimi, and a couple of the rolls and liked all. On a recent Friday evening the restaurant was filled and the service and food was on time and well prepared. One issue the restaurant should address is the lighting. I really wanted to like this place. Went here after reading Yelp reviews, but my meal was terrible. Service was wonderful...everyone in there is super kind. But the chicken and steak hibachi was not edible. Chicken was a strange, rubbery texture that was Very undercooked. Found a very small piece that wasn't pink, and I couldn't even swallow it, it was that bad. The steak was a strange, grainy beef...? Horrible tasting. I was just going to eat the rice, but that too was not good. A horrible orange sauce was poured over the top, which made this meal worse as a whole. Miso soup was good, but an extra 1.50 for a very small amount. Wanted to like it, but the habachi meal was simply terrible. read more

Went here on a Friday night-- I actually called around 8:30 to make sure they really were open until 10 pm. I confirmed it about 3 times. We got there at 9:20, and were ignored by the hostess (who was helping someone else, but could have easily said "hi, sit where ever you'd like") and two staff members. When the couple the hostess was helping were finished, she looked at us and said "take-out?"-- referring to a bag of take-out that was behind her. I said "no, we'd like to eat here." That's where it all went wrong. Apparently, after being rudely ignored for 5 minutes, we were "too late" to eat unless we could "be really quick about it." I pushed back with her-- I pointed out that it's now 9:27 on a Friday, and we CALLED YOU to confirm you were open until 10-- if we were there at 5 to close, I'd get it. I've worked in hospitality for years. But it was 9:20 when we came in-- that's 40 minutes to serve us and still have us out of there by 10 pm. HORRIBLE hospitality-- I should get an apology and a gift certificate or something, but I doubt I want to actually eat their food after this experience. I've never been refused service for being in the restaurant on time and willing to spend my money. read more
