I have been a devotee of this restaurant and wrote a review earlier last year--it has been my favorite go to sushi place and I have not found much else decent in the Indy area. However, the last 3 times I have been there--always early, each time the sushi chef is outside the restaurant squatting and smoking a cigarette. 2 of the 3 times, I followed him and did not see him washing his hands. I left 2 voice mails and then a hand written note for the owner/manager to call me so I could discuss this before posting on Yelp knowing I wanted owner to know but because nobody has returned my calls and message, I am posting this. I had the Maki B which was the spicy tuna, salmon and shrimp tempura. It came with miso soup and a small salad. Salad was very basic but the soup was good. The tuna and salmon was good. Cute spot off of 465. Easy to get to with plenty of parking. It wasn't very busy for a Sunday around lunch time, but it was consistent with the amount of people going in and out. From the moment we walked in everyone was quite attentive and pleasant. They have a variety of drinks, and they're strong so watch out. Started with crab Rangoon and it was creamier than other places , but still so good. My sushi was delicious and the presentation was beautiful! I did add wasabi because I love a kick of spice. It was however not spicy at all and I added a lot more than usual. Not sure what they used to make it but perhaps have different levels of spice. My beef ramen, it was blistering cold out, was warm and smelled amazing. Out server said there wasn't a spice option but they did bring out a salt shaker with some spices in in, which I added a bit of. It was lacking some flavor in my opinion and I only got half an egg, my favorite part! A little bummed about that. It's a huge plate and I ended up taking it home and having it for lunch. Added salt to it and it was great! The menu online showed lunch specials but after visiting over the weekend they're only for the weekday. Love Sake Maru! It's beautiful on the inside. The staff is always friendly, never had an issue here. Prices are very reasonable and the food is great. Presentation is always a 10/10! If you're hungry and unsure of what sushi place to go to in this area, look no further. This is located in a small strip next to chipotle and other businesses. When you walk in, the place is pretty quiet and the best way to describe the ambiance is serene. It's very pretty inside and the attention to detail with the decor is really nice. When you walk in, there is no host stand, but there is a sign by the door and someone will greet you for a table. There are approximately 13-15 tables (a few of these are two-tops) so the place is relatively on the smaller side. It was approx 7pm on a Friday night and it wasn't super busy, we immediately got a table. There is a nice bar you can sit at and watch the chefs prepare sushi if you're riding solo. The server was very nice. I believe they only had two servers this nice so please be patient should that occur. The spring rolls were soo good and the dipping sauce was a 10/10, but be careful if you don't like spicy. We also had the gyoza and again, the dipping sauce was insane. I had the steak hibachi which was pretty good and we also ordered the scorpion roll (which is two rolls in one) and that was delicious. The bathrooms were pretty clean and overall this restaurant was a good time. They also have these really cute booths that I would love to sit at, maybe next time! read more

Our foodie group came to Sake Maru one night last week to get some ramen noodles and some warm food for the cold weather. This restaurant has been around in Castleton for quite a while, but this was my first time here, so I was looking forward to trying something new. For a small venue in a strip mall, I was very impressed with the beautiful ambiance and the great bar area in front of the restaurant. The menu was very diverse with a great selection of sushi, ramen, poke bowl, and other Asian dishes. Our server greeted us with a smile and took good care of our group. I ordered the ramen buckwheat noodles soup with shrimp and hot tea to drink. The hot tea was excellent and the server was kind enough to bring us refills of the hot tea, which I was not expecting, so that made me happy. The ramen came in a huge bowl and tasted immaculate! The broth was perfect and the texture of the noodles was perfect in the broth. The shrimp was excellent! I dipped the shrimp in the broth and it made a huge difference taste wise. This was definitely high quality food as advertised on the storefront sign. Everyone loved their dish in our group, especially the shaggy dog sushi platter which is very popular at Sake Maru. If you love sushi, you will need to try the shaggy dog sushi platter. It is one of a kind and superb quality. The server treated us after our meal to our choice of candy from an assortment of candy on a basket. This was a nice touch to end the meal. Sake Maru is an excellent Asian restaurant and I see why it has been around for so long because they produce high quality food every time. I would love coming back here to try the sushi because it looks incredible and I know it would be worth the price. This was my best dining experience to start off the winter and will come back to Sake Maru time and time again if I am in the neighborhood. Simply marvelous! read more

When we first walked into Sake Maru, the place looked really nice--small and cozy with the feel of a fancy restaurant. The atmosphere was welcoming, and we felt right at home. The food was excellent! I was so surprised (in the best way) to see Otoro and Uni on the menu. Both were incredibly fresh and absolutely delicious--definitely not something you find just anywhere. I'm not sure if it's a promotion or just the normal that comes with the omakase meal but for only $85, you get an appetizer, a salad trio, miso soup, one roll, the omakase sushi plate, and dessert. My friends have been here many times and have said good things so decided to check it out for my birthday dinner. Overall, the service was good (but it was also slow when we went - only one other table on a Friday night). We ordered the Love Boat and Nabeyaki Udon. The sushi itself was good - but it was a little bland (I assume it was frozen before because it tasted very watery). But definitely better than most of the other sushi restaurants I've been to. The Love Boat comes with sashimi, nigiri, and 2 chef's special roll - but one of their rolls is just a california roll (so not sure why it's 'special'). The Udon was just okay, but definitely warmed us up. I've been on a perennial mission to find the best Japanese food in Indy and my next stop was Sake Maru. Right away our first impression wasn't amazing as we were greeted not by aromas from the kitchen, but by the chef himself, mid-cigarette. Not quite the amuse-bouche we expected. The inside is very upscale and I was very impressed by the selection of furniture and design. Our server was outstanding and couldn't have had better service. We were first brought out soup and salad which I usually like an access of ginger dressing however this was a tsunami of dressing. The pickled ginger that came out with the sushi was the first official red flag. If they can't make fresh ginger, I'm not holding my breath for the sushi. The sushi and nigiri were okay. What irritated me the most was the entree (Salmon Teriyaki). The salmon teriyaki was unfortunately overcooked and dry, likely due to the unusually thin cut of the fish, which left little room for moisture. To make matters worse, it was served over a bed of raw onions--an odd choice where gently sautéed onions might have added more depth and balance. Will be moving onto to the next Japanese restaurant. read more

The Scorpion Roll is not only beautiful to look at but also great to eat. The Gyoza dumplings were also great, the sauce that comes with them is definitely the best compliment. As a main dish I had the Tonkotsu Ramen and all about the fish was amazing, from the broth to all the veggie add ons. I added some chili oil for a bit of spice to the ramen it was the best. My wife and I haven't been to this place before last week, but it's definitely our new favorite Japanese place in town. We went on a Thursday at 7, it was pretty chill. I'm not much of a snob about sushi, I was raised in the midwest after all, but I do love variety when it comes to fish. And Uni. God I love Uni. They have it, unlike almost every other sushi place in this town, and they have Japanese oysters, and fish that you won't find anywhere else. We were a bit underdressed after coming in from kickball, the place is really nice but no one made us feel out of place. Service was excellent. While it doesn't look lik emuch from the outside, the interior of this restaurant is nothing short of stunning. You can tell a lot of love and attention to detail went into it. One of our guests ordered a cold sake and it was served in this impressive contraption. Don't ask me what it is called, but it felt super fancy and it keeps the sake cold. The chicken Karage is a fairly generous portion with the most delightful fried chicken with a nice dipping sauce. The Lotusroot Karage consisted of crunchy deepfried slices of lotusroot with a delectable dipping sauce also. I personally opted for the spicy crab salad, which was very nice. it loos small since it was served on a giant while plate with the tiny cowl in the middle. But it was actually quite a bit. I always forget how deep those type of plates are. Some dishes came with a salad included. I am not sure which dishes get what salad though. Some were served a simple green salad with the traditional dressing while others received a wood box with 3 little bowls in it. These bowls contained 3 different 'salads'. One being fried tofu, another steamed tofu and also another with seaweed salad. Most of us ordered various sushi rolls and plates. Everything was presented beautifully. A lot of care goes into their food presentation as each plate looked like a small master piece. I enjoyed the Shaggy Dog roll and it was a stellar experience. Shrimp tempura rolled into the middle of rice. The roll is topped with long strands of crab meat and has a couple of interesting sauces drizzled over the top. With a bit of imagination you can see why it's called Shaggy Dog. This is my new favorite sushi. The amount of sweet crabmeat and the savory sauces and add to that the little crispy crunch from the shrimp tempura and all your senses are having a great time. What we did not enjoy were the fried bananas and the fried ice cream. The coating was a bit under done and doughy. I've had better. Go have dessert somewhere else. You'll be too full to enjoy that anyway. Why then do I still give it 5 stars? Because everything else is just so darn good. Taste, presentation, price, ambiance, service... What a great spot!! The inside looks so fancy and so upscale, the chairs are velvet which were incredible, the ambiance was dinner date feel. The service was exceptional, the host knew how many we had before even walking in the door and had everything ready to go as we walked in from location to correct menus. The manager came around often and checked on us and our empty plates were removed as quickly as we sat them down. The food was absolutely great, we got 2 rolls, a free appetizer, and dessert we ate at our table and we took 2 hibachi meals home which were so amazing! The hot mama roll was so spicy and so delicious, def. Favorite part of our meal! I brought my 10 month old with us and he did great and all the servers were so kind and the manager stopped to see if we needed anything for my son several times! Mother's Day evening with my wife and daughter was very disappointing. The food was served appetizers last....and each were served at a different time. The servers had to be prodded three times for water! The restaurant only had two other patrons so they weren't crowded. My katsu curry was cold as if it had been refrigerated. While the sushi and sashimi was prepared properly the servers had no idea about the menu -- questions were responded to with a blank stare and even after checking they didn't know the materials or the preparation. 4/22/26- We looked forward to trying this restaurant but must have gone on a bad night. The waiter was very nice but admitted he was new at this location & was filling in. I asked if they had prosecco or a small champagne spit. Since he was new he didn't know, he calls the manager & no. Ok - no problem, I'll take a Merlot & my husband a Cabernet. Drinks didn't come so we asked again, he returned stating they didn't have Merlot. So we said- ok 2 Cabernets & he brought 2 Chardonnay's. He apologized & brought the Cabs. Our appetizers were good, so we ordered dinner. My husband's dinner came 10 minutes or more before mine & I had to ask for our soup and salads. We just kinda laughed it off. Also, There was a young lady who kept bringing others food to our table? It was a pleasant surprise that when we got the bill, he did not charge us for the wine, but were told they don't take American Express. Went here for the first time last night and had a great experience. There weren't too many people in there so we were sat right away. The decor and aesthetics here are great. We were waited on immediately and our waiter was so friendly and attentive! I had the wasabi gyoza, the firecracker roll, and a drink I don't remember the name of but it had aperol, sprite, and sake. All of them were fantastic! The presentation of everything was great. I saw a few tables order things that came in a wooden boat and some plates with pretty fake trees on them which made me jealous kind didn't have one .
