The Trail of James River Park

When the river is low (it was at five feet when we went) it can be quite scenic. You get to walk across a vast expanse of boulders that are normally underwater. When the river is high prepare for some Class IV rapids (the Pipeline Rapids stretch is considered Class IV and hazardous at times). The trail itself is often times small catwalk on top of a sewer pipeline just above water level. Ok sewer, I know gross, but the water here is re markedly clean (people were swimming) despite the occasional litterbugs. Hey I grew up surfing a break in El Segundo that was over a sewer pipe (affectionately called Shitpipe), and I am no stranger to water treatment and everything seems fine. I'll report back when I have three eyed babies in the future. And this pipe carries street run-off to a storage area and not to the river. The unique part is that this trail is a mix of industrial combined with nature. You got the iron trail and bridges, with abandoned buildings and then you spot a small island that is a large Great Blue Heron rookery, where dozens of herons nest (http://www.rvariverfront.com/trails/blueheron.html). And then you got a ton of rocks and boulders to hang out on and watch the river. I've seen tons of people sunbathing here and dogs swimming. Now about how to get there: I wouldn't depend on Waze or google maps. Find the James Condominiums (that can serve as a landmark when you are hiking) and park around there. There is to access from the walk at South 12th and Byrd streets or from the east end of Brown's Island. There is parking for a few cars and you have to climb down a metal ladder, but it is well worth it.

Getaway Adventures - Dragon's Tooth after climbing up

I completed a hike with Stacy on May 4th at Dragon's Tooth and it was a blast! Stacy was an…read moreexcellent guide for many reasons: 1) she was very attuned to the pace of the group (there were 3 of us) and regularly checked in about breaks. 2) she knew the trails around the area very well and was able to point out some interesting things along the way, much of which I wouldn't know if I was just hiking alone. 3) she was just a joy to be around and managed the energy of the group well. The end of the hike involved some technical rock climbing/scrambling skills that I am still getting comfortable with. I was scared, but knew I wanted to challenge myself. I was a little slow, but she and the others in my group were super patient and encouraging, and as a result, I made it up the tooth! I really appreciated that she let me go at my own pace and guided me through that part. I felt pretty accomplished and was able to enjoy even better views at the top. Totally worth it. This was my very first time visiting this part of Virginia and I didn't know what to expect (oftentimes up north hiking in early May might entail dealing with mud season and I really wanted to explore somewhere new). I can easily say I will be coming back to the Blue Ridge Mountains very soon because it's so gosh darn beautiful. My hike with Getaway Adventures was definitely the highlight of my quick little trip to the area.

It's not very large and definitely not your typical park i.e. with tons of seating and a children's play area. This is more of a fishing off the dock and hopping into a boat park. As you enter the you'll notice benches w/ seats - this is such a great area for catching up on your novel. This area will shade you from the scorching sun rays. I enjoyed reading a book and meeting locals. Most people came to fish, run, and for the scenic walk. The benches on the dock/walkway are metal so if you're planning to sit and hang bring something to lay over the metal before you sit - it may burn your bum!

I love that the whole park is sprawled over a marshy creek and there a boardwalk meandering through it. And guess what?? The boardwalk has been extended all the way to the next neighborhood. Now there are two entrances winding around this rustic, reedy park. It's a bird watchers delight... not to mention some other little critters. Today I came on a crisp, cold day to get some fresh air, exercise and then settle on a bench and read, while soaking in nature and and reflect on the constraspects of the current pandemic. Perfect place to gain positive perspective! My favorite park!

You might spot hawks, eagles, or herons. In spring, the path leaving the reservoir is often covered in tiny frogs. They have no self-preservation so watch your step. Or text a picture to the VA Snake Hotline (804) 617-7086 to confirm that you don't need to freak out. As for the paw prints in the mud: I've seen them. They look like mountain lion tracks. How ever, the state of VA needs to invest in bigger signs with a bit more clarification of where things are. Basically I had to go back to main entrance and make turn just to figure out where I needed to go, but funny thing is I was the first person to show up at the shelter . The park is beautiful though, and very popular for the water park inside.
