Beautiful campground and can accommodate tents all the way up to the big trailers, like my family's big ol trailer. It is nice, quiet, peaceful and they always have interesting activities for adults and children alike. They also have a free library and sell firewood. The bathrooms are spotless. The employees are by and large very friendly and helpful (with exception of the young female ranger who told my sister in law "You have legs! You can hike, can't you?" She may want to brush up on the Americans with Disabilities Act and learn not to be so, as they say "ableist") I also love their gift shop. They have fun t-shirts, pins, stickers etc. I look forward to coming back--I love this park and Powhatan. read more

This is a great park. It sits right on the James River. The campsites are nice and level and have water and electric. There are lots of hiking trails around and you can also bike on those trails. read more

Powhatan State Park - Kayak launch - Parks Near Me - Powhatan, Virginia

We loved our stay at Powhatan State Campground! Tucked away in the Riverbend Camping Area, this spot is a gem just outside of Richmond--perfect for a peaceful getaway. The RV lots are spacious, wooded, and impeccably clean, with gravel pads, picnic tables, and even metal posts for lanterns--great little details that show how well the campground is maintained. We arrived just after 4 PM, which is the cutoff for staffed check-in, but our site was clearly marked with our reservation on the post--smooth and stress-free. We didn't use the restrooms or other facilities, but from what we saw, everything looked clean and well cared for. The campground itself is large, with lots of quiet roads for walking or biking, and big open fields that add to the peaceful atmosphere. Each site has a nice wooded buffer for privacy--we barely noticed other campers even though it looked to be about 60% full on a weekday. We had electric and water hookups at our site. No sewer hookups, but the dump station was easy to access. Rates were very reasonable, especially given the serenity and space you get here. Highly recommend if you're looking for a quiet, scenic, and well-kept camping experience near Richmond. We'll definitely be back! read more

Powhatan State Park - RV site at Riverbend Campground - Parks Near Me - Powhatan, Virginia

We came to hike the trails on Jan 1st and there was no entrance fee. The staff at the entrance was polite and helpful. We passed a small playground that has a bathroom near it. The trail that starts along the river was easy for the entire family. There are a few picnic areas right near the parking lot at the start of the trail. read more

If you're from the Richmond area, you know that floating down the river is a huge summer pastime. I got the chance to visit this state park for the first time on a floating trip I did earlier this month and loved it. I highly recommend checking out this route for floating because there aren't any rocks to run into like the Pony Pasture to Reedy Creek route. Although there is ticket entry for this park, if you're a big group $5 is worth the entrance fee. The ranger was able to let us know that the river was low (we had checked beforehand and just wanted to confirm). We decided to take a route from boat launch c to maidens boat landing. We were on the water for about 2.5 hours. The river was about 2ft. If the river is higher and you want a longer route you can start at boat launch a or b. While we prepared our floats, I was happy to see a porta potty near the boat launch. I also appreciated all the parking spaces they had available. Although I only came for a water activity I really enjoyed my time at this park and highly recommend visiting for time on the James River. read more

Who knew! This park is what I call a "Sleeper" park. You look at it and say "ahe" initially -- ok, so what? But then you visit Canoe Launch "A" and there are like 200 people all putting their tubes in to float down the river to either Canoe Launch "C" or even farther -- the bridge. My wife and I say to ourselves - I want to do this! Apparently this is a best kept secret on the weekends, floating down the James river. We are going to do this. We also met Mitchell who works at the park and was setup down @ Canoe Launch A this past Sunday. Super nice fellow to chat with and very knowledgeable about the park. We will return again in the evening to partake of the Owl trait walk in the evening. read more

This is a very well laid out and clean state park. Each RV/campsite is naturally separated by forest. (The yurts are not). Bathrooms are individual bi-gender rooms and VERY roomy. Plenty of showers as well. 3 different river access points (James River). We only used access C. No "beach" to speak of, but there was a small viewing area. The nice thing on this one was a slide ramp in the middle the the stairs making it easy to bring floats, canoes, kayaks and paddle boards in and out of the water. A great place to put in or take out. Very close to Maidens access. read more

Another great Virginia State Park. This park is right on the James River. Actually the Native name for the James River was in fact the Powhatan River! You've got some great camping spots here. Some are probs 20 feet from the river. The trails are well maintained and well marked like all other Vastateparks. I was a happy hiker here. Great trails, some sunny, some shady, and the River trail is just that; A trail alongside the James. Bike riding here also! Powhatan State Park offers access to the James river via boat launch, tubing and fisbing. * DYK that the James River is the longest river in Virginia? 340 miles and ends in the Chesapeake Bay. So pack it in, pack it out, leave no trace! #savethebay. read more

When Powhatan State Park opened in 2013, its 1,600 acres became Virginia's 36th state park. The parkland was originally part of the nearby Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center including 320 acres of fields that were farmed by prison inmates for crops and hay. Today folks from across the region flock to this attractive neck along the James for swimming, tubing, and hiking. ‍ read more

Never thought I'd have to defend a park but here I am! We trekked over six miles here yesterday exploring both the wooded and river trails. Both were well marked and easily accessible. There are bathrooms, picnic areas, camp sites and playgrounds so yes I'd say this is a park for those questioning it. I recommend parking in the lot past River Launch Road and checking out the "Turkey Trail" or "Gold Dust Trail" if you want to be by the river. We followed signs from there marked "river walk" and ended up down by the water. It is dog friendly but there are no off leash areas. We didn't come across any off leash dogs which we appreciated! Parking fee is $4. There was no one working at the entrance so I recommend having the exact amount as you may not be able to get change. read more

A hidden gem .... Biggest draw for this park is the excellent James River access for canoeing, kayaking and river tubing. If you are into aforementioned water sports, this is the park for you. There is ample parking and the facility is top notch overall. From the looks of it, this is a fairly new state park. Everything here seems to be clean, new, well maintained with clearly marked signs. The park didn't even show up in my recently updated Garmin GPS but does show up on Google map. For me, the only negative was that some of the hiking trails are shared with horse trails. There were a lot of horse poop on the day we visited and trying to avoid them while hiking was an exercise in itself. The trails are fairly short and not all that challenging but they interconnect with one other to give you a fairly good distance hiking-wise. The park is surprisingly expansive and the paved areas are good for getting around with bikes. The campground facility is excellent with good amenities and well spaced lots for pitching tent as well as parking RVs. There are also couple of yurts for rent as well. There are two picnic shelter to accommodate larger crowds and a playground. There is even a self-serve air pump/repair station to repair tires for your vehicle and the trailer. $5 entrance fee is reasonable for helping to defray the operating costs of the park. read more

Yet another great Virginia State Park Virginia does a wonderful job making sure that their State Parks are well-managed and maintained. Powhatan looks and feels like a clean, tightly-run ship of a park. There's not much to do in the off-season, but my friend and I enjoyed the clean paths and clear fields. Give it a visit! read more

My wife and I are moving to the area and thought we would check out this park. Walking away, I cannot believe that proximity to this park wouldn't be listed on every home listing because, truly, I feel it would raise the value of the home. Beautiful trails, gorgeous historical river for kayak/paddle boarding, friendly faces and seemingly endless trails. We cannot wait to live a few short miles down the road, and utilize this for years of fun (and dog walking!) to come. 6/5 stars. read more

Powhatan State Park - Great trails, very lush in summer! - Parks Near Me - Powhatan, Virginia

Pretty area. River trail is nice. Sufficient parking. Very well marked. We did the gold dust, river, turkey trail loops. Unable to use America the Beautiful national park pass, with daily fee $4 Watch the website. Particularly, about how muddy things are. We went at a time where bikes were prohibited due to the mud. We learned our lesson. We went in January, and it was super muddy, with minimal wildlife. Maybe all secondary to visiting in January. Difficulty is pretty minimal. Gold dust is only one moderate, and nothing was moderate about it. Turkey trail was the only one with a substantial hill Overall, if you're coming from Richmond, a good way to mix it up with trails, but nothing special to routinely drive 40min each way with so many closer options read more

Excellent park for everyone. All new facilities, great walking trails and nice place to camp by the water.

I love that we have a State Park in Powhatan. The scenery is beautiful from the expansive fields to the pine forest to the hardwood trails that lead to the river. It's a great place for trail running. Very clean and functional facilities. read more

I'm hoping that this is still a work in progress - for which I'd save my $4.00 parking fee and go elsewhere. I attempted to go on a hike on poorly marked and not fully cleared trails on a warm February day. The trails were so poorly marked we determined they were either unfinished or we couldn't manage to trace the direction of the trail and ended up taking a detour. If they would have just mentioned the condition of the trails on the information signs I may have turned around instead of venturing into the wilderness with a newborn. Hopefully with a couple more years to finalize and establish the park, it will be a great family location. read more

Nice trail along the James River to walk along. Very clean. Multiple trails throughout the park.

reserved a campsite in for six days and on Friday we went to work came back and our campsite was took it from us when we paid for the night so if I were you if you're not white, don't come to this campsite because they will treat you like shit and they don't care if you are not a white person and don't have money don't ever come to the site and then if you're poor because they will you they will take a vantage of you and not give a shit about you. Worst experience I've ever had at a state park in my own home town if I could give them zero stars, I would've worst ever state park I've ever stayed at except for there are one person that was here at the state park trying to help us so we can extend our stay and she went on the computer and found , a site for two weeks I called the next morning to make sure we can set up the reservation. They told me that that person was there filling in for someone and she had no clue what she was doing. I feel sorry for that person because they disrespected that poor woman, and she was so nice to me so sweet and trying to help me I will never ever stay at Paul Paul Powhatan state park ever again . read more

This park is very clean. I witnessed the park staff clean a campsite (hose down area, picnic table, pick up trash, etc) after previous guests had left. The campsites are near one another but spread out enough where you have plenty of space around you and between you and the next site. Electric and water was available. There was a fire ring and picnic table with benches. There are a few bath houses available throughout if needed, trash dumpsters and a place to purchase wood. Trails throughout where people were bike riding. Quiet during quiet hours. It's mostly just woods but if you're looking for a clean quiet spot to hang out in your rv, this is better than other campgrounds we've been to. And it was only $35 a night. read more

Severely disappointed in this "park." I am continually baffled by Virginia government fencing in a chunk of land and calling it a park. There is nothing here. Save yourself the time and go drive around the short pump mall parking lot. You'll see more, and you'll not be disappointed by what you see, unlike if you go to this "state park." read more

Great place to hide a dead body cause you have the park to yourself. The river views are pretty awful, a straight drop into the muddy James. But it was enjoyable with the dog, has a nice kid's playground, great bird watching. read more

I read other reviews about this park before going, so I didn't really have my hopes up. I'm pleased to say that I genuinely enjoyed the park. The staff was super friendly and gave me some great trail ideas. I did not go to hike, I went to set up a slackline and figured I'd shell out the 3 bucks if it meant getting some line time in. It's a cute park, definitely pretty empty, but it's in a pretty location. I doubt I'll use the park as a hiking trip, but I will be back again soon to slack some more! read more

My dog and I happened upon Powhatan State Park in the fall of 2014...what a gem! We go a couple of times a week in the cooler weather... many different trails to choose from...we prefer Pine Trail, Big Woods and Cabin Trail...today we discovered a new trail off Cabin Trail, a little steep but worth it for a wonderful spot on the creek/stream...after the dog got his paws wet and a good drink we crossed the creek and continued on...can't wait to see what's next!!! I am so glad we decided on the season pass last year and we plan on renewing this year! read more
