When we first moved to North Nevada I had an excruciating toothache. Normally, I would never go to an ER with a toothache, but it was 3 AM and there were only a couple of patients at that time. I didn't have to wait long to see a doctor and was in and out in 1 hour. That is quicker than normal, but, I've never been more than three hours in total. Pretty amazing for an emergency room. Equally as convenient is the 24 hour Walgreens pharmacy just two blocks away. Consider all that and 3 AM isn't a big deal, anymore. I have been at work on the ER several times in the past year and I've heard about some pretty amazing performances from both doctors and RN's. I can honestly say that the few times I've needed medical attention have been successful with no complications. I believe the people here are friendly and do their best to lead you to the road to recovery.

Was here with my daughter and was very pleasantly surprised. We arrived with a referral from an urgent Care, we were seen immediately and taken back to a room with no wait time at all. Nursing staff was pleasant and informed, did not come in room and disappear for a half hour! A Dr came in very quickly and labs, tests were ordered. Very little wait time there. The facility has been updated on a continuous basis as over the years here in Reno and with three children, I have seen this ER many times. Impressed with the rooms, the cleanliness and the staff. Perhaps may have a longer wait on a busier day but this was our experience on this visit. I also noticed on the front of the ER, it says 'William Pennington", so admire all that this benefactor has done for this area!

Check in. They ask the problem and give you a wristband. Tell you to have a seat until a tech calls you.

Rarely has there ever been a good reason to the emergency room, unless someone is having a baby or…read moresomething but I have been very fortunate the few occasions I've had to go to Renown's Emergency, the medical staff took very good care of me. It's takes a certain kind of person to be a nurse, doctor or EMT and Renown's medical staff earnestly seem to be very dedicated to providing excellent quality of care; they're so friendly, professional and wonderful bedside manner, I feel very at ease whenever I interact with them. As negative as the reason I had for going to the emergency, I had a pleasant and positive experience with Renown's staff. My mother only critique is when I had to go to the emergency, the emergency parking lot was full, so I had drive away and park to the nearest Renown parking structure, to the right of the emergency entrance and unfortunately there was construction at the main road too. Fortunately, I found a parking spot at the ground level but I had to walk all the way back to the emergency room entrance and according to the receptionist I asked the fastest way from the parking lot to the emergency room was just following the sidewalk path outside; had my condition been a really dire one, all that walking would've been really inconvenient. Maybe Renown would consider adding additional parking spaces by the emergency room entrance? That's my only suggestion/critique.

I wish you could leave negative stars. I took my husband there last night as he was having trouble…read morebreathing and having chest pains. After triage we waited over 2 hours and still had not been taken to a room to be seen by a doctor. I asked the desk and explained his breathing is getting worse, especially with visitors coming in with over powering perfume and cologne. The person at the desk said they would update the charge nurse. Almost 45 minutes later still nothing so we left. In that time I saw people brought in by ambulance and were pushed into the waiting room to wait to be seen. Like really, isn't that the put of being brought in by an ambulance??? Absolutely horrific experience in the er and clearly there is no rush on getting anyone care. With all the money they spend on new facilities you would think they would have updated this er, it is lost in time and looks like it did 30 years ago. I hope Kaiser buys Renown out, then maybe we actually get doctors and better care. Also, my husband is still having issues and was never seen last night, and of course with your very apparent doctor shortage I can't even find a new doctor for him since his last one left.

Formal Complaint -…read more On the night of December 14-15, 2025, I presented to Northern Nevada Medical Center's Emergency Department with severe abdominal pain persisting for two weeks (that had been meticulously tracked with a Medical Assistant Software my partner created, that was being used in real time during this visit). What followed was not the provision of medical care consistent with Nevada law or accepted standards of practice, but a sequence of dismissals, misrepresentations, and dangerous prescribing decisions that placed me, the patient, at risk and violated my rights. From the moment of triage, critical information was distorted. A security guard misreported "back pain" instead of "abdominal pain," setting the stage for misdiagnosis. Nursing staff asked perfunctory questions without follow‑up, silenced my caregiver's attempts to provide medical history, and dismissed documented conditions including Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). When my caregiver attempted to clarify, she was told she could, 'not speak for the patient', despite my autism and severe pain impairing my ability to recall details. Physician Evensen DO, Erik Peter, demonstrated ignorance of MCAS, asking "what is that?" and then dismissing it as "rare." Despite repeated warnings, staff prescribed metronidazole (Flagyl)--a medication known to trigger mast cell reactions--alongside ciprofloxacin, creating unnecessary risk. Morphine was administered before a complete medical history was documented, violating basic safety protocols. Laboratory results showed no infection: WBC 7.4, CRP not elevated, urinalysis clear. CT imaging confirmed diverticulosis without diverticulitis, no obstruction, no perforation. Yet antibiotics were prescribed "just in case," contradicting the findings. Meanwhile, the CT revealed hydronephrosis and a possible renal nodule--serious findings requiring urology follow‑up--which were not explained to me, the patient, or my caregiver with adequate clarity. This complaint documents not isolated oversights but a pattern of systemic negligence: misdiagnosis, inappropriate prescribing, dismissal of caregiver advocacy, and obstruction of record access. These failures violated Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS 41A.015, NRS 449.720, NRS 629.515), federal EMTALA requirements, and the patient's fundamental right to safe, respectful care. The harm is multifaceted: physical risk from contraindicated medication, emotional distress from repeated silencing, financial burden from unnecessary prescriptions, and systemic danger to every patient who presents with complex conditions. This complaint demands immediate accountability, retraining, and systemic reform. It is supported by timestamped documentation, medical records, and expert analysis. This is not a request. This is notice. Substandard care will no longer be met with silence. This ER will be receiving a formal 10 page complaint, full analytics ran, comparisons between the staff and my partner's Medical Assistant Software for minute-to-minute data on everything that was administered, said, done, and ignored. Hopefully no other patients go through this without knowing their full rights because this ER can, very literally, put your life in direct danger due to severe staff neglect And if you made it this far and are wondering if it was busy, there was 1 other person in the ER when I showed up, so there's truly no excuse for this type of "care"

I can't say enough about the staff of professionals at the ER At McCarran of Northern Nevada…read moreMedical. They were there when I desperately needed medical advice and a diagnosis, at a time when my primary care physician's office failed miserably. This adventure started 9 AM on a Tuesday morning, morning, I called my primary care physician of Carson Medical Group with symptoms of a stiff neck, fever over 100, nausea, chills, fatigue, and vomiting. I was told they had no appointments, but they'd leave a message for my doctor, who would get back to me. Fast forward to 2 PM. I get a call from my primary care physicians office telling me I should go to an emergency room because they believe I have meningitis‼ In a panic, I head to the ER on McCarren of Northern Nevada Medical. Thankfully, the competent staff, based on the questions I answered and an examination, diagnosed me with a viral infection. Not meningitis! They dosed me with a Tylenol-Advil combination and a lidocaine patch, then sent me home with prescriptions for nausea and extra lidocaine patches. They also instructed me to please return if my symptoms worsened or call if I had questions. I felt guilty for taking up the time of staff and resources for an issue that could've been handled in a timely manner in my primary care physician's office, had that office not been overbooked. And I won't even go into the five hours it took from my original phone call and message of my concerns, to the phone call I received advising me to go to an ER. This all too frequent "adventure"points to the sad state of medical care in this country, with emergency rooms becoming your primary care physician. Again, the staff at the ER At McCarran were fabulous and I can't thank them enough for the prompt attention to treatment and setting my mind at ease with a diagnosis of no meningitis. As a P. S. I received a call to check on me this morning from the ER nurse. A thoughtful and appreciated contact.

What followed was not the provision of medical care consistent with Nevada law or accepted standards of practice, but a sequence of dismissals, misrepresentations, and dangerous prescribing decisions (AGAIN) that placed me, the patient, at risk and violated my rights. 1. Clinical Analysis of the Discharge Record Even though the staff verbally "scoffed" and suggested it was just a 'kidney stone', the After Visit Summary tells a different story: Official Diagnosis: They have officially documented Ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction as a primary diagnosis. This is not a "simple kidney stone"; it is the exact pathology identified at the first ER. Abnormal Lab Results: My urinalysis showed Trace Protein and 1+ Ketones, which indicates my kidneys are under stress. Medication: They administered Ketorolac (Toradol) at 6:32 PM. Toradol is an NSAID that can be hard on the kidneys; given my history of kidney failure, this needs to be monitored closely. Breach of the Standard of Care: This occurs when a provider fails to provide the level of care a competent professional would. (e.g., dismissing an acute UPJ obstruction as "chronic pain" without new imaging). Failure to Diagnose / Delay in Diagnosis: The refusal by SMRMC to perform a new CT or MRI despite worsening lab markers (Protein/Ketones) and a 1.9 cm lesion. Patient Abandonment/Violation of Rights: Repeated requests for a Patient Advocate were denied, and call buttons were ignored. I WILL ADD THIS TO MY ON-GOING CASE, PICTURED BELOW AND THE COMPARISONS OF BOTH EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT FALIURES.

Having lived in Orange County, California for a time (where medical jobs are extremely competitive-- especially at hospitals like Kaiser where my mom and sisters-in-law have worked) I can say I have a high bar for medical care. My husband and I have had nothing but good experiences in Renown; we have always felt that our children have been well cared for within the Renown healthcare system (and no, that's not because the staff knows I have family in the medical field, I always keep that piece of information to myself-- though I will say having family in the field is extremely helpful for confirming if the interventions being taken are good ones!). Our most recent trip was for my 22 month old who was having trouble breathing (oxygen was immediately provided at the first ER off South Meadows followed by a treatment of DuoNeb). Our daughter still labored to breathe after interventions so they ended up transporting us to this location's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Overall, I highly recommend Renown.

They explained everything calmly and thoroughly, and treated her with such care and kindness. When they found out it was her birthday, they surprised her with gifts after her X-rays, which completely lifted her spirits and brought a smile to her face. Thanks to their warmth and encouragement, she stayed so brave through it all. The next morning, she woke up and said, "I can't believe I did that. I was so brave!"
