If CCPL doesn't have the book you want, they can get it for you and to the branch most convenient to you. Besides that, the library is a fun 'third place' to be away from home or work, and everything is free (minus printing, which is super cheap). The library is very busy with students after school hours. If you want a very quiet environment, come during the school day or later in the evening (after 6:00 PM). I am so glad to have this branch close to home.

They make it really easy to find books via their website. I can log into my account and place a hold from home and then they will email and/or text when it is available. The reserved books section is to the right when you walk in the door. It's alphabetized by the borrower's last name so you can easily grab your book and head to the checkout stations. If you're checking out a book from another library, you will have to scan the barcode inside the back cover (or some are on the back cover), otherwise the system just knows what the book is when you lay it on the console. The parking lot is pretty small here so I usually have to park in the shopping center lot and walk over (not far). Also, free WiFi here!

Filled with books that celebrate history, current novelist favorites, children's selection, and a quiet space not yet tarnished and overrun with technology, the Timrod is perhaps the best Library I have encountered yet. It's enough to make anyone re-discover and fall in love with Libraries as they were once intended- a peaceful space to educate oneself and dive into both new and old perspectives. The smells of the old 1915 home make you feel blessed to even be amongst such information that can both educate and open your eyes. Open from 10-5 daily, the fee for membership at this nonprofit is only $25 a year. This type of non profit is a great reminder that not all are the same- the money from membership goes to being able to maintain the site rather than go directly into someone's pocket. Of course you're free to spend time learning complimentarily, but once you set foot inside and are open to all it has to offer, needless to say, I wanted to give more so that this special place can continue to exist and thrive. Did I mention T-shirts. You simply must go. The staff are all wonderful people to care about people and their work. This building is…read moremassive from the outside, although inside half of it is closed off for employees space, parking garage, loading dock, and Book Mobile. The library space inside downstairs has kids section, meeting room, new arrival books, non fiction, books for sale on honor system. Upstairs has the South Carolina room which is the history area with microfiche machines. In addition there is a small art gallery, public computers, study rooms, newspapers. I came here to get library card so could use Libby app for audio books. The employee I spoke to was very pleasant in explaining the library set up.

I lived in Charleston for ten years before visiting the Main library. Three other libraries are…read morecloser to my home, and with ILL and transfer between branches, I can read any book I want without having to travel downtown to pick it up. This library is massive and reminds me of the library at my state university (years ago), while the other libraries in the system are more like "neighborhood" branches. This may be the flagship library, but every branch is impressive. Another fun fact is that the Main Library branch serves as an early voting location during election season. Ballots and books are two of my favorite things, and I'm glad the library does its part to serve democracy. I thought I'd have to drive around for a parking spot or park in a nearby garage. Not true- there's parking on the ground level, your first hour is free, and it's super easy to get in and out. The Main library is also open on Sundays from 2-5 PM, and it's the only branch with Sunday hours. Since Sunday isn't as busy downtown, it's a great time to explore this branch.

If eBooks are your thing, they offer book rentals for it. I like the variety of featured books when you first walk in and the seasonal centerpiece featuring books that fit the bill. Before the pandemic, there used to be a table that had a community jigsaw puzzle which was fun to contribute to. Years ago they had teen programs and craft nights and the summer reading programs gave me something to look forward to as a kid. Also before the pandemic they had events like "color your stress away" where adults could meet up, color, and converse with each other which was neat. There's seating areas and private rooms to fit your needs whether it's to get work done or have a quiet study group.

With patience (sometimes it takes a couple of weeks), I can choose a book from the larger system and have them send it to my branch. This location was renovated recently, and it's easy to get in and out from Maybank Hwy. Outdoor book drops are also available if the library is closed, as it is on Sunday, but the hours in general are good. The Johns Island library has a community room as well as dedicated teen and children's areas for those programs. As an adult, I'm sort of jealous that we didn't have such cool teen/kids rooms in the library when I was younger. Johns Island as a whole doesn't have a lot for younger kids, so the library is great for them. Like other branches, you can reserve books online then walk in to check them out, use the self-checkout machines, and obtain resources from other libraries through interlibrary loan. CCPL also has tons of online features too, including audiobooks and eBooks. You can also read newspapers like the New York Times for free with your library subscription. If you don't already have a library card, become a member and visit the Johns Island Library!
