Beautiful, peaceful cemetery, and steeped in history, too. It is located in the historic district of St. Augustine, on the grounds of the active military installation known as St. Francis Barracks, surrounded by charming, old Victorian homes. The first burials were soldiers stationed at St. Francis Barracks and veterans of the Indian Wars, and there are also graves of 5 British Commonwealth servicemen of World War II.
The cemetery is very well-kept. Grass is trimmed, there are no weeds, no decrepit headstones, just rows and rows of marble headstones as in formation, in its 1.4 acres. There are three striking pyramids that cover the vaults of individually unidentified remains of 1468 soldiers of the Florida Indian Wars, along with Major Dade.
I came here to pay homage on Memorial Day, and it was beautifully decorated with flags. Unfortunately, it is closed to new interments. My father would have loved to have been buried here, he always dreamed of coming to St. Augustine, but never had the chance to do it. It was his dream to retire here and die, but he never made it. He just knew he would love this city and share a special connection with it. I wonder if that is why I love this city so much and keep coming back again and again. read more
