This cemetery is where my grandfather has rested for the past fifteen years. I visited his gravesite this past spring, after being away for ten years due to relocation. It is hard living over 2,000 miles away from the resting place of your dearest family member, but I was relieved to see how clean and peaceful the grounds of San Lorenzo were--just as I remembered them from when we visited his plot when I was a child. It brings me great comfort to see that his resting place is so well cared for.
Aside from my personal attachment to this space, San Lorenzo is also rich in history. Since Saint Augustine is the oldest city, San Lorenzo is probably one of the oldest cemeteries (dating back to the 1890s, I believe). There are dozens of confederate soldiers buried here, as well as Roman Catholic figures, such as an archbishop and several bishops and priests.
San Lorenzo's main shortcoming is closely tied to the age of the grounds and similar prehistoric management style. It is challenging (if not impossible) to get anyone on the phone and they do not have a website. As a family member of someone who is buried there, it would be nice to be able to contact the facility or groundskeepers to place an order for flowers or similar tokens to be placed at my grandfather's gravesite since I am so far away and unable to do so. read more
