The small grocery store has most of the basics you need, and it's only a short walk from the railway station. The categories of goods are very limited, and some of the shelves are near empty. It's easy for their self-checkout. read more

This Tesco caters mostly for Cowley Road's mixture of students and professionals, and is not…read morenecessarily designed as a family shop. The range of groceries is not as wide as in bigger stores, but it has a large selection of drinks, snacks, and prepared foods. This makes it convenient for quick shopping trips but - despite the small pay carpark at the back - it's not really too handy for anything bigger-scale. It's usually bright, clean, and well-staffed, and the self-checkouts are very popular. It has ATMs, Lottery, and a range of other pluses (Krispy Kreme doughnuts!) that make it popular and successful at meeting the needs of its target market. Staff are friendly and recognise regulars, which adds to the pleasant feel of the place.

The store is small, but they really do pack it in. Even the register seems to be drowning in stock. There's a very good variety of some dried goods like Chinese herbs and vegetables. And a huge variety of snacks that I'm both familiar and unfamiliar with. I think prices are pretty comparable to Lung Wah, however the vegetables here are more varied, cheaper, and better quality, I've found. Most of the veg at Lung Wah is pretty sad, so I come here for my East Asian vegetables that I can't get anywhere else.

Different types of noodle, rice, soy sauce, bean sauces, oils, nuts, a small selection of veg, and soya milk drinks. You won't get everything you need for cooking more obscure authentic food here, but you will do pretty well. There is a minimum purchase price to use a debit/credit card but this is fair enough.
This is the smaller of the two Sainsbury's stores in central Oxford. Being a little bit more…read morecentral than the Westgate store, and with longer opening hours, it is naturally busier. The range of products is not as good as that in the Westgate and the prices are higher - a tub of houmous might be 5p more expensive here. It's not the place to do your weekly shop, but is convenient for little things that you might have forgotten to buy. Queues are long but fast moving at peak times. One thing that does put me off is that most of the fresh fruit and veg is pre-packaged, which means that a) you can't pick out exactly what you want, and b) you can't have smaller amounts than are in the bags.

It's quite hard to get into through the flow of pedestrians and queues for the bus on Magdalen Street, but it's well worth it. There are no surprises, and it's not really the height of luxury, but there's a good selection of fruit juices and a section of bakery goods and lunch time snacks/meals. Because it's only Sainsbury's Local, as opposed to the main shop, you don't really get the good Sainsbury's Basics deals or the more unusual foods, but there's usually a suitable alternative available. The queue often snakes around the shop and is very offputting, but it moves surprisingly quickly; they've got a very efficient system going, so don't be put off because of that. The most frustrating thing is trying to fit everything into a bag on the tiny counter, as the shop assistants work very quickly! Some are friendly, some aren't so, but you'll get your food for a reasonable price, so it doesn't really matter.

People do stop outside the shop to pick up but watch the yellow lines and traffic wardens. This does put me off shopping there and because the items are cheap its surprising how quickly you put items in the trolley and how much your bill comes to at the checkout. If you're after any of the cheap booze offers, make sure you get there as the doors open to beat the local Indian restaurant owners cleaning the shelves out. For a small Tesco in a small town I have no complaints. It's great for buying lunch or just a few essentials for home, such as milk or bread. Or even a paper to entertain those who don't find shopping so exciting! However, it is also located on the way into Bicester Village, causing traffic irritation from clothes shoppers who have heard rumours of Bicester's great parking system, and from grocery or petrol shoppers who just nipped in for a few items and are now stuck for ages waiting to get out.
