The prices are not cheap but I don't have a huge database for comparison. I like the fact that they installed self-check out stations which greatly speeds the process. The store is small, but they really do pack it in. Even the register seems to be drowning in stock. There's a very good variety of some dried goods like Chinese herbs and vegetables. And a huge variety of snacks that I'm both familiar and unfamiliar with. I think prices are pretty comparable to Lung Wah, however the vegetables here are more varied, cheaper, and better quality, I've found. Most of the veg at Lung Wah is pretty sad, so I come here for my East Asian vegetables that I can't get anywhere else.

There is a reasonable selection of frozen fish…read moreand seafood (at better prices than some major supermarkets, but generally more expensive than Lung Wah Chong in the city centre). Different types of noodle, rice, soy sauce, bean sauces, oils, nuts, a small selection of veg, and soya milk drinks. You won't get everything you need for cooking more obscure authentic food here, but you will do pretty well. There is a minimum purchase price to use a debit/credit card but this is fair enough.
This is the smaller of the two Sainsbury's stores in central Oxford. Being a little bit more…read morecentral than the Westgate store, and with longer opening hours, it is naturally busier. The range of products is not as good as that in the Westgate and the prices are higher - a tub of houmous might be 5p more expensive here. It's not the place to do your weekly shop, but is convenient for little things that you might have forgotten to buy. Queues are long but fast moving at peak times. One thing that does put me off is that most of the fresh fruit and veg is pre-packaged, which means that a) you can't pick out exactly what you want, and b) you can't have smaller amounts than are in the bags.
Sainsbury's Local has a fairly good range of foods, with all the essentials and is usually…read morewell-stocked despite its popularity. It's quite hard to get into through the flow of pedestrians and queues for the bus on Magdalen Street, but it's well worth it. There are no surprises, and it's not really the height of luxury, but there's a good selection of fruit juices and a section of bakery goods and lunch time snacks/meals. Because it's only Sainsbury's Local, as opposed to the main shop, you don't really get the good Sainsbury's Basics deals or the more unusual foods, but there's usually a suitable alternative available. The queue often snakes around the shop and is very offputting, but it moves surprisingly quickly; they've got a very efficient system going, so don't be put off because of that. The most frustrating thing is trying to fit everything into a bag on the tiny counter, as the shop assistants work very quickly! Some are friendly, some aren't so, but you'll get your food for a reasonable price, so it doesn't really matter.

Be careful to check the opening times - I always seem to go at the wrong time. It's more convenient than going to the main post office, though, and does most of the same things: most importantly, you can post things and get certain foreign currencies (eg: Euros) pretty easily. Aside from postal facilities, it stocks a good range of magazines, especially some more unusual, academic ones. It's the sort of shop you pop into when you know exactly what you want and you're in a hurry. Excellent.

The staff are always friendly and helpful, and there are a large number of checkouts which are opened during busy times to reduce the length of time you need to spend queueing to pay for your goods. They sell good quality fruit and vegetables, as well as snacks, ready meals, and household goods. The large size of the store enables it to stock a wide range of products, and so it caters to the vast majority of your needs. The prices are quite competitive, and the quality is good, so it is definitely worth a try if you are in the area.

However as this place is so huge you'll probably still find what you are looking for. Since I've lived in Oxford I've come here about a dozen or so times. We tend to try and stick to mid evening as the crowds die down a bit and they are not quite into their horrible restocking mode. Generally you can find fresh products and a wide selection of near everything (do not come to this Tescos if you are looking for home goods/ electronics/ etc). The prices as it is Tescos are decent. The staff are generally friendly as long as you're not getting the end of shift crowd. It's got a huge range of items, although no adult clothing (other than underwear) or much in the way of electronics/media/toys, unlike even bigger stores. For groceries, though, it's got a lot to offer. Fruit and veg are of good quality and usually well-stocked. The deli and fresh fish counters offer a lot of choice, and they even have a large 'Polish food' section. They have two 'car trolleys' which amuse small (and big) kids greatly, and make the shopping trip easier with children who are too big for the trolley seats but too small to walk all the way around without whining. Staff are friendly and helpful, and offers on food are good value.

After a quick microwave warming the flavors and textures of all were surprisingly satisfactory. Last year while staying in Paris I did sample the frozen dinners at the Picard stores. How the Picard franchise remains open is a complete mystery to me, so the French must also eat really crappy food when they don't want to prepare a proper fresh meal. ... Back to Budgen's. Market size is 75% smaller than a Tesco. Selection variety therefore is less numerous. Upside is that what is on display is usually pretty good quality and the prices are competitive especially with discounts on sale items. All fresh produce and bread I've purchased here made me quite happy. The store is sparkling clean, well lighted. My only gripe: the wine selection is mediocre. Lots of low priced generic, factory produced wines from Australia, South Africa, Argentina, etc. As France is just across the channel why are there not more French good quality wines in stock? Still, I'm a happy Budgen's customer.

Much like Starbucks, the service is quite alright, and the drinks are moderately priced. Because these locations are LITTERED with tourists, it's always so packed in each of these locations. This location can be particularly crowded as it is in Oxford's crowded touristy area, and if that isn't enough, it's inside of Waterstone's Bookstore (so double crowded)! The turnaround is slow as many people visit Costas for the free wi-fi accommodation and study space. Many customers pick up a book or two, plot down on the limited seats, and sit there for hours reading. Finding a table is rather hard -- especially at this location because it's somewhat small. Because the baristas are constantly bombarded with customers, they are slow to clear the tables. I have come MANY times only to clear my own tables and wipe away the gunk with my own napkins. Iced-blended mocha here means just mocha over ice so don't expected anything icy or frothy. There wasn't much consistency to the taste as I never knew if it was going to be good or not. The Iced American is okay. Overall, I enjoyed this location because I love Waterstones, but I definitely wouldn't recommend this place if you're just coming for the drinks.
