Reasonable produce and dairy sections, of course a little size-limited. A really decent location, not even a hop skip or jump from the busy Piccadilly Circus. This is where the locals shop and I was able to pop in and grab what I needed before hopping onto the Underground. Prices seemed to be right in line with the Tesco Extras out in the suburbs and I found the staff to be efficient.

If you come here within an hour before closing, you will have to step over boxes messily strewn across the already limited floorspace, as the worker are restocking the shelves. With that said, this market is in a convenient location and is open until like midnight.

Little did I realize my family lives just a few blocks from Waitrose. Upon walking towards the entrance and entering the grocery store, the ambiance and appearance were bright and cheery. The lime green hues were calming as well. Perusing through the isles was reminiscent to the Rainbow Market located in El Cerrito CA USA. The wine selection had quite a few different varieties including, lol~"The Rest Of The World" humorous labeling. The pastries were not labeled with the entire list of ingredients used making each pastry so, I was unsure what the ingredients used were. The common daily necessities such as organic milk and eggs were ample as well as diapers for my grand-daughter and TP located on the shelving were plentiful, too. Fruit and veggies appeared fresh as well which my daughter bought three bananas for my grand-daughter.

Every time i've been in there the staff have been lovely, courteous and patient (which is a surprise considering some of the rude lunch crowd they get through). I normally do my 'side shopping' at the Co-Op on old street itself, but since that store is closed at the moment for refurbishment I ventured a bit 'up market' and I have to say, I'm glad I did. The selection of food, fruit and veg on offer is staggering in comparison to the co-op. Everything I've eaten from here has been faultless, which is surprising considering the first sandwich I bought was a cheese and celery (It sounds weird but I couldn't resist). One thing that suprised me was definitely the price, it was my misconception that Waitrose was very expensive when compared to other retailers. OH HOW WRONG I WAS! On the items i bought (sandwiches, fruit and other nic-nacs) Waitrose was consistently the same price or cheaper than it's counterparts. We're hard done by supermarket wise us Shoreditch residents. Sure, there's a health food store here and a Tesco Express there but we don't really have our own supermarket. A thousand and one places to buy a vodka tonic? Sure. A place to stock up on food essentials? In your dreams. The closest thing we have is Sainsburys Islington and boy is it a good supermarket. Great deli and meat sections, a good range of produce, hard to find health foods and a diet busting bakery all conspire to make us Shoreditch residents wish we resided in N1 instead. This place makes a mockery of Tesco with its superior quality and similar prices and all things considered, it's probably worth non-Islington residents going to Sainsbury's Islington every week or so and just catching a cab home. It's that good.

Why? 1) I am used to it and know I can get everything I am looking for there. 2) The quality of the food is high and selection is good. 3) I also sometimes buy their 'Taste the Difference' foods which usually deliver as well as the 'Basics' range (eg loo rolls which are great value). 4) Prices are good. The only downside to the Islington branch is that it doesn't have the best layout (long and wedge shaped) and the car park stuck at the back means you have to schlep your trolley in the rain through an obstacle course all the way around the side of the store past the crowds waiting for the bus along the pavement but this is a minor complaint really given the central London location. The Camden Town Sainsbury also has an underground car park but is a newer store. That branch also has an in store bakery which Islington doesn't. Weekends, especially Sunday, also tend to be a zoo so either be prepared for the crowds or go during the week. Bonus of the car park however is that you can visit the excellent market stalls in Chapel market and pick up some great bargains on fruit and veg as well as fish. There is an excellent fish stall in the market with much lower prices than you'll find in Supermarkets and probably fresher.

Also, English grocery stores aren't laid out the same. For example cookies might be in multiple locations rather than one designated "cookie aisle." Also it was interesting because you had to pay for a shopping cart. They did have a limited number of hand baskets. If they ran out of hand baskets, people would use the bags they brought and add there items into the bags. Then remove them when they got to the counter. It was nice because there weren't long lines, and they had a lot more self-serve kiosks than my local American grocery store.

I made an online purchase, to be delivered on Sunday. In my Clubacard app it appeared as delivered. On Friday, and because they didn't refund my money, I wrote to the customer service WhatsApp, and they texted me that in the deposit they forgot to make the refund, I complained because 5 days had already passed, and they told me that they would make the refund this same day. The day after, without a refund, I wrote again, and they tell me that I have to wait 3 to 5 more days. What rubbish company is this?. this is a robbery, no other supermarket charges you for a purchase until you receive it, and Tesco does it, bill you for the purchase, or keeps your money unless you claim it.

Other than that, boo hiss and NO. The place is tiny - fine, I can deal with that. But when your super-cramped aisles are blocked by large crates, making it impossible for your customers to pass through, you get a frown from me. And when your check-out area is so backed up with people waiting to pay that there's a ruckus in the back due to confusion, you get a glare from me. And when your self-check out lanes are bogged down by the machines needing assistance, and the one employee working that area is so taken with a lady that he's COMPLETELY IGNORING everybody and everything else around him, you get a snarl from me. The poor couple to our left had the red light at their station blinking for two minutes while the employee mooned over the blonde in stilettos. They finally gave up and walked to the end of the registered line. And the people behind us were waiting to ask a question while the employee tripped over his tongue, trying to invent reasons to touch the blonde in the furs. And we were stopped cold by the machine demanding an employee's attention, while the hapless employee was busy giggling over something the blonde in too much perfume was saying. Completely, incredibly, horribly unprofessional and pathetic. We went out of our way to avoid this store for the duration of our stay.
