There are plenty of arguments for and against the social impact of segregated communities in…read moreManchester. One of the overwhelming advantages of such communities however, which I'm sure will gain universal approval is their complete immunity from being threatened by giant retail food chains. You know the ones I'm talking about, the ones that've been driving out small independents outta business across across the country. I LOVE the fact that the communities remain militantly loyal to local foodstores like Madina. Upon close inspection, turns out the reason is a little more complex than just cultural affiliation. One of the main one reasons? This place is AWESOME!! There's literally a library of spices to buy (at BARGAIN prices) and experiment at home with. Any foodie/charlie out there who's sick of the monotonous nature of the shopping experience, will find this to be their culinary/chocolate factory. True, London probably bigger volume of such establishments, but they probably cant beat us for sheer quality. So next time you're stuck in traffic driving to town on Stockport road (through Levenshulme) have a break, and instead of having a kitkat, park up and have a cheeky gander.

With the UK 'hungry gap' upon us, I bagged a box of lychees plus sundry Desi vegetable and fresh herbs. Freshness of the produce was very good, although a bit of banter with a Desi customer revealed that he was passing up on the tinda as being too big - although this is no doubt an out-of-season issue. For the mobile cosmopolitan foodie such as myself, the aim is to know where all the ethnic food stores are so that ethnic food shopping can be done with a minimum of detour from other city business and pleasure. Although there is nothing really oustanding about Madina Superstore to make you travel beyond your nearest Desi superstore, it is nice to have a proper Desi supermarket in Levenshulme to save Levy locals a trip up Stockport Road to Longsight. And visitors such as myself can combine a visit to Madina Superstore with a trip to the monthly Levy Market, or else the permanent Trove café bakery or POD deli.

I called in ASDA at Ashton while in the area, hoping to pick up a few things in their gluten free…read morerange, with ASDA not having any stores near me, I saw it to be the perfect opportunity to take a look around. This is quite a nice store, a good size with a good clothing section too, as well as a good range of gluten free products, from both ASDA's own brand and Schar. This store also has a good sized cafe, and a good number of scan it yourself tills, as well as standard manned tills. The staff here seemed quite nice and also patient with me, after I ending up breaking 2 tills, and it was quite late in the evening, so I'm pleased they sorted the issue out in a nice manner, unlike how it would have happened at many other stores, although I was dissapointed my coupons would struggle to go through, when they would at other ASDA stores, or other supermarkets for that matter, on the same exact type of till, on the same exact products. To summarize, this is the nice ASDA store and much nicer than some of my local stores in Harpurhey and ASDA, although with some tilling problems and the store not being perfect with improvements always needed to be made in ranges of certain items such as gluten free, milk products and a few other items.

Good prices really especially kids school uniforms. Look out for the good grocery offer and the ones on boxes of beer nearer Christmas

Like a lot of people out there in Yelp land, I love a bargain I mean who doesn't, so when I see a…read morestore called B&M Bargains then the very fact that the word 'Bargains' is in the shops name must only be a good thing right? I've got to say that's B&M is the Rolls Royce of the Cheapy shop world, yes some of the clientele can bit a bit dubious looking, yes a lot of the staff work there because they failed their Pound Land exam, but don't let that put you off going in. The whole place is filled with products you didn't know existed and didn't know you wanted - for me in particular I go for the brand names just to play it safe, I challenge anyone to find a box of Cadbury Chocolate fingers for 49p or less or a large bar of Green & Blacks milk chocolate for 99p! For a short while during summer I must admit that I did have a slight infatuation with their outdoor lighting section, so much of it was solar powered, I was amazed by this high tech wizardry it was like all of the worlds energy problems had been solved and again at such reasonable prices. They have a selection of house hold items, mostly poor quality but then again to paraphrase Judy Garland, We ain't in John Lewis anymore! They also have some bath and beauty products with some reputable names as well as a very well stocked sweet department (as touched on earlier). I would say if you see one these shops next time you're on the High Street, don't quicken your step to walk on by, but step through the doors into this palace to price reduction, meet local celebrities some of whom may have appeared Jeremy Kyle show and or Crimewatch. Either way you'll leave feeling richer for the experience (unless they've had the pick pockets in that day, the little blighters)
