This Tesco Express (formerly Tesco Metro) location is over two floors on Market Street, on the corner going onto Brown Street, right opposite the Arndale. It is probably the largest convenience store in the city centre, stocking a range of essentials and a little bit more over two floors, you can get between the floors using an escalator, but there also is lift access (the lift is super slow though and has been for years!). There is a decent selection of to-go food and drinks, including a Costa Express coffee machine, you can also find the occasional item on the small yet useful hot food counter, but that does tend to go fast. The layout of the store is easy to follow, I personally dislike the two-floor format for a store like this, as it means having to spend more time going up/down escalators and searching around the store, this is the type of store you want to get in and out quickly, and being over two floors and a lack of supporting mobile payment similar to Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer nearby, there are drawbacks. Most of the staff seem friendly and helpful, but there are a couple of bad apples. There are plenty of self-service checkouts, and a couple of manned checkouts too, there always seems to be a handful of machines either not in use or broken down, so there's always a wait at the checkout for some reason. The prices are much higher now than they were under the Tesco Metro brand, so you are paying a good bit more than you would in a regular Tesco store, which is annoying! 4* - A good and large store in the city centre, yet could be far better. read more

We all know by know that I'm not down with Tesco. I understand most corporations are intent on making as much profit as possible regardless of other businesses. I think what distinguishes Tesco from their peers and contemporaries however, is the limits they're willing to go to get an extra slice of the cake. Speaking of which, the reason I loathe this Tesco Metro more than the company's other stores is for the truly bad produce. I've accompanied friends shopping here and can honestly say both the bakery and ready meal section are truly disappointing. As is the dairy and meat selection downstairs. On the positive side, the wine and liquor section appears well stocked and the fruit and veg appear fresh and reasonably priced. The worst thing about this particular Tesco Metro is the atmosphere and the dodgy characters. The staff always seem harassed and it's usually so busy it's impossible to walk round without feeling stressed or like you should be on guard. read more

Its quite a big Tesco for the city centre of Manchester but we are in so need of a large superstore somewhere in town. Its got two floors with escalators and a lift to downstairs, downstairs sells beers,wine,frozen food,beauty products,cooking ingredients, coffee,tea all the usual everyday stuff and upstairs sellls all chilled things and all green grocer stuff. There is also a kiosk for papers, lotto and ciggies. The store has almost everything you need and its pretty reasonably priced and its good for those who want a quick sandwich or bite to eat on there dinner hour who work in town. Theres quite a few checkouts but they do like you to use the annoying self service ones, they never work and take forever. Most of the staff seem down to earth and always seem to be pretty cheerful considering it to be a very busy store. It is really handy being in the centre of town for people who live in town for small bits and bobs really, do it the easier way though if you want to do a big shop and have it delivered. read more

The store is a little bit on the costlier side. I was trying to get a toothpaste which coated around 2.5 pounds, the same would have costed me about 1 pound in a different store. The items are very limited, despite the shop being in the city center. read more

There are three times to avoid at this particular Tesco. Lunchtimes on weekdays, weekends, and after 5pm on weekdays. That doesn't leave the Regular 9-5 Joe much time to enjoy this store at its best, but if you must brave the throngs, be prepared. This Tesco Metro is a force to be reckoned with. It is a living, breathing, constantly moving beast, it is large for a small outlet, it has two floors, and you're continuously in danger of being trampled underfoot. Sounds fun, yes? Oh, we love a challenge. If you can negotiate these difficulties, this Tesco is a great branch to get involved with. Firstly it's dead central. In fact, you literally couldn't get more central. It's located on Market Street right next to Boots and opposite one of the main entrances to the Arndale Centre, which is perhaps one of the aspects that makes it so popular. And to be honest, I used to come here back when I was a student living in halls at Salford Uni. The difference between this Tesco and the others (such as the one closest to where I was living) was... well, the difference between Taste the Difference fruits of the forest crumble and Basic Eccles cakes (Disclaimer: I bloody love Eccles cakes. And Chorley cakes), the difference between lemon and coriander houmous and thousand island dip. Basically, the Tesco near my halls was frequented by a lot of local salt-of-the-earth Salfordians and they catered for their tastes. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but this one has a bit more variety going for it, and I was always taken aback by the fresh olives and salad selection whenever I visited. Yes, it's the simple things with me. The two floors make life a little easier, because downstairs, where you'll find household, store cupboard stand-bys, the freezer section and what-not, here is where you'll get a brief respite from the ferociously fast sandwich-grabbing office crowd upstairs. Also they have Sky News broadcast on two large ceiling-mounted TVs, one on the lower floor between some aisles (which I will say I've found myself gawping at for a while once I've got into a story) and one upstairs to relieve queue boredom. A mass of self-service machines also make the queuing process a little less horrific, so believe me, the generally dreadful experience is worthwhile in a way. A comprehensive international aisle completes a pretty darn good branch of Tesco. Use well, but use cautiously. read more

This is a pretty big store for a city centre, with a reasonable range you wouldn't normally expect on a main street, but, on a busy street, you know people are going to pile in here too. I don't mind downstairs (there are escalators to get down), as it always seems much quieter and calmer, upstairs however, seems to be organised weirdly, and always be rammed, making it harder to navigate, it may just be me, and it's fine for dipping in and out and grabbing a few items, or a slightly larger shop if you know exactly what you want, but it's not really the atmosphere you a casual shop with a browse and standing for ten minutes gazing at the meat section with your just-as-indecisive-as-you partner wondering what to make for dinner- if you do that, you will be constantly bustled in here! Perfectly fine, well stocked with nice staff, but definitely not one at all for the agoraphobics! read more

Sometimes, a girl just can't bring herself to enter Tesco on Market Street. After tackling the masses surrounding the Arndale, getting around the shop can feel like an Olympian effort. So, the branch on Deansgate is my second best bet. It's fairly small, but with a handy cashpoint outside, and offers many of the same items as in the bigger branch. Fresh fruit and veg, a good selection of meat and fish, fresh bakery towards the rear of the store, and a choice of alcholic beverages, including a fridge stocked purely with what looks like pre-mixed drinks, such as Malibu cocktails. Shopping here can leave you slightly worse off than the large branch on Market Street, but the 3 for 2 offer across all the meat is something too good to say no to. I walked away with mince, meatballs and breaded chicken for less than the larger branch, and my freezer is heaving. The main thing that lets this branch down is the service (oh, and the fact it's just a Tesco.) On more than one occasion I've got to the end of my shopping being scanned before the employee has even noticed the card machine is broken, extending my stay beyond the realms of patience. Due to the quieter nature of the shop, they can often seem oblivious to shoppers, meaning there's often a stock cage lieing around in the middle of an aisle with noone wanting to move it. There's one particular member of staff who can be rather over-enthusiastic with the self-service checkouts, meaning you get one red light (you need to be ID'd, it hasn't registered the item etc) and he scans everything else for you. Slightly patronising, very annoying. A necessary evil. read more

You know, I didn't do a whole lot of shopping at Tesco. Perhaps it was the experience of my first day in Manchester that did it. I just got some bread and juice, and as I exited, right in front of the train tracks, a young but haggard ginger gal holding the hand of a struggling toddler approached me. "Excuse me, sir, but I need train fare to get home to me mum and dad. My hosband beats me and I've got to feed my son, and I just need train fare." "Can I buy you some food in Tesco? I just came out?" "No, I need £12!" "Have you tried contacting the police about your husband? Maybe there's a shelter or services that can help you. Want me to help?" She just kept staring at me. All of the sudden, my university student advisor showed up. Tanya, I think. I asked, "Are there any services or sheltered for . . . err . . . battered women and children?" "Wot's the problem now?" "I need £12 for train and I just need to get home." There was just a fishy vibe about it all. Well that and I had been taken by an Irishman who told me a 4 hour-long sob story in an Easy Everything about how his nation is being torn apart and his roommate kicked him out and all he needs is either the rent to get his stuff or the train fare to his parents. Tanya was suspicious too. There was something rough about this gal. "Right, well I'll buy you the ticket, but I'm putting it on my card, so you can't return or sell it. You have to use it or I'll just get the money back." Smart gal. I later saw her at a banquet in San Francisco. To this day I still fall victim to sob stories in front of supermarkets, and still don't know how to get out of them. read more

This Tesco Metro is located right in the middle of Market Street, which means that it's almost always busy and even worse on the weekends. There's a weird two level thing going on here as well, with all the alcohol and some of the other stuff downstairs in the basement. However, you can do close to a weekly shop in here, with a huge selection of fruit and vegetables and all the other items you might want to fill your cupboards with the week. I guess that would only work if you lived literally right in the centre of town though, you certainly can't drive up to this Tesco Metro. It's on Market Street! There are lots of self service machines, unfortunately the last couple of times I've been here quite a few of them have been broken, which makes the queues take just that bit longer. So Tesco Metro. Busy, messy and a bit stressful, but in a very useful location if you're right in the middle of town. read more

A surprisingly large and well stocked supermarket in the heart of Manchester city centre, Tesco Metro gives neighbouring convenience stores something of a run for their money. You can expect to find all the usual food and drink in here, but it's also quite handy for picking up less common essential items like lightbulbs that I can never find for love nor money in other city centre supermarkets. It used to be a 24-hour store, but due to a lack of customers and excess of drunk revellers at 4am it's now reverted back to more conventional opening hours. The queueing system has recently been modified to make way for a large amount of self service tills, which makes a lot of sense as so many people that go to this store are only picking up a handful of things. Even at peak hours the queue times are now pretty decent. Overall a nice supermarket outlet that offers a wide range of goods at reasonable prices. read more

This is a great tesco to say its bang in the middle of the city centre. Its on 2 floors and even sells books and CD's as well as a huge range of fresh and frozen food. you can get your lottery, phone top ups and stamps here too. its a bit of a pain in the bum transporting your shopping home though as there is no car park. i think the nearest one is the Arndale one, so if you have a big shop you need a few extra hands. read more

This is a tesco express which has recentley been renovated to be like a mini supermarand ket. You can get most things that you would find in one of the larger stores, fresh meat, fruit and veg, toiletries, sandwiches, ready meals, frozen foods, wine and beer, fresh bread and so much more! As well as all that they sell dvds, cds, giftwrap and cards, home stuff and their newest feature is the tescos direct service which is a catalouge they now have and you can make orders and pick up your items from this store. Its great to have something like this in the middle of town because its very handy if youre on your way home from work and need to pick up something quick! They have a cigarette counter which also sells the national lottery and some self service tills for when you are in a rush!! read more

I have a few bad experiences there. I think cashers there were sometimes so rude. A woman who served me was chatting with a colleague next to her during whole service and never looked at me or say anything. When my bf went to there, the casher was eating a sandwhich so she could not speak to him at ll. But after these bad experiences, now they put self check out machine, so kind of problems are sorted out..? I like the location though, very handly read more

Biggest retailer in the country and they get a lot of stick for it. But you dont get that big if you dont offer a good service. the goods are always quality and all well priced. With the clubcard deals earning you extra gifts or food discounts ,you cant be them. The shelves are always well stocked and the shop floor is always clean and tidy. read more

As much as I sometimes kick myself for over relying on Tesco they can occasionally knock out a decent supermarket: this and the one in Didsbury hypnotically force me to part with money. I rely less and less these days on these stores but there are just times when you cannot get certain goods at certain times from anywhere else. This is a perfect city supermarket, mainly due to it's size (it is set over two floors) allows it to carry a much more representative range of goods. A large fresh fruit and veg section (in itself larger than some small stores in town); bakery section (fresh bread, kinky doughnuts); huge refrigeration/chilled area (downstairs) for such products most at home in that environment (cuddly mozzarealla balls, sulty feta delights and supercilious pizzas). And of course there is a large drinks section, whether that be booze or organic Dutch Gooseberry fizz to service the most desert like tongues of the local populace. At times (pretty much most of the day!) this store can get really, really busy: fantastic place to people watch, baguette and merlot in hand. Somehow the complex queuing system seems to work (not neglecting the thousand odd staff) and you're 'seen to' within a hop and a skip. We'll see if Tesco get the other plot around the corner on High Street to perhaps take the burden off this store. read more

This Tesco is well placed in the centre of Manchester for when you are doing your other shopping. It's a Tesco express but you can pretty much do your weekly shop here as it has verything you need and a good selection of fresh food. As well as normal tills they also have some self service tills as the store does get pretty crowded due to it's location. read more

This place is alway busy, no matter if you go in at 9am or 9pm probably because it is right in the heart of the city. It is a big store and they have 2 levels, when you come into the store that is the top level and their is a level below. This Tesco have a massive range and offer everything from food, drink, cigarettes to DVDs and booze. Their DVD range is especially good but it would not rival that of their close neighbours HMV. Their is a good mix of self-servive machines, i think 14 of them, and staff attended counters. Altough if you do go to the self-service there is help on hand from customer assistants if you get into trouble with the technology. read more

Tesco is great, they have such a lot of reductions and great savings on food, electrical etc. I love the clothes they sell at Tesco, they sell excellent quality items, ladies wear, mens, teenagers and children, at quite reasonable prices, and I like to be able to buy something for the evening out and get my shopping done at the same time. I also like the award system they have in place where you get points on your shopping which can be exchanged for money off vouchers, every little helps. I often shop at Tesco but if I cant get to the store I shop online which is just as good. I always seem to get an online discount voucher which reduces my bill and as I have dissabilities the delivery service if fantastic, the drivers also carry my shopping through to the kitchen for me. Tesco is a huge store with absolutely everything you can possibly need on sale here, the shelves are always well stocked and they never seem to run out even when goods are on offer. read more

Just started using Tesco online shopping for my big food shop. Quite impressed . Pay around a fiver for delivery depending when you want it. Weekend always more expensive. Easy to do on the computer. Order comes all bagged up with your shopping list. If they haven't gotsomething on the ordr youasked for they give you asubstitute. up to you if you want it-can refuse. read more
