I needed groceries and I stopped here because it was the closest grocery store to the mill I'm working at and close to my hotel. The parking isn't hard to navigate. It's in the down town area so you do get the crackheads with threatening auras. The store itself is on the smaller side and I didn't see a hot deli. But it was easy to navigate and I was able to get in and out quick. read more

The pharmacist wouldn't hand over my partners meds without me walking in there and handing them my ID. If it ain't one thing it's always another with these Safeway pharmacy's. And weirdly enough, things always seem to immediately resolve as soon as I walk through the door. I'd think it's racism. He shouldn't need a white man to walk in and give him permission for his meds every time but apparently that seems to be the case here. These local Safeway pharmacies seem to thrive off of plausible deniability and I'm starting to think that it's a problem with upper management. read more

Literally hate this place. Don't go here if you actually need anything. The shelves are ALWAYS bare, the clientele is less than ideal especially if you have children. There are homeless beggars outside the store 9/10 times. One girl in particular working the self checkout is legit the crankiest thing on planet earth. This spot is tinier than your typical Safeway. No bakery or deli here; those items get shipped from elsewhere. About 70% of the time, you'll encounter someone a bit sketchy, though it's mostly harmless. Prices also tend to be higher, maybe because of the limited grocery options in this low-income part of the city. I usually end up here when I need a missing ingredient due to its proximity. Still, for a better experience, you might want to explore other places. That being said the workers are nice! read more

I just went there and got a chicken and bow tie pasta from the cooked salad section and there was an bandaid in there.The employees here are packaging salads with their bare hands. I will never never ever go here ever again and I don't recommend anyone else going read more

Shopped here several times over the years. It's an alright store except for occasional false pricing. On Mondays they offer a cold chicken basket for $4.99 with a big $5 sticker on it. Can I ignore such an exciting deal?* So of course I took it to the register and it rang up as 7.98 -forget about it. *yes I can. Cheap wheat bread is really good though when they have it. Semi-healthy Jif Natural peanut butter is also the cheapest around Hilltop at 2.49. 5Lb Potatoes tend to be bigger than in other stores. For less bulky and more durable groceries I go to Walmart. read more

There are always drug addicts and drunks roaming around. Its always dirty outside and loud at night. Employees do not pic up phone when customers call in the evening to complain of extremely loud noise s coming from their Safeway parking lot. Safeway does not care about its surrounding living customers for garbage flying from their parking lot into neighboring home lots. read more

DANG. Ghetto-ist Safeway I have ever been to... sometimes I like to giggle about the fact that it's still called "safe" way. haha! Okay... maybe that wasn't that funny... I was disappointed at how... small this location is! They don't even have my "super-obsessed" sourdough bread... I used to buy almost everyday... back when I lived in Puyallup! Sad... just sad. As for the rest of groceries I normally buy, they seemed to have everything. The location is pretty close to my new place now, which is bonus!! Another great thing about this "market", is that they have their own parking. I'm still new to the whole downtown Tacoma "vibe" ... and so far I do not like the "pay for parking everything frikken where you go". I always... end up coming here at night too... The chehalis safeway implemented a new check acceptance policy and the front end manager couldnt accept my check after shopping there for 25 years and NEVER have i written a bad check. I cant wait for the Winco store so we have options. If Safeway wants to make it difficult on long standing customers then its time to move on. Sad. read more

The selection could be better but they are obviously working with limited space. The location means you're shopping with Hilltop residents and Hilltop used to be a dangerous place to live. It's gotten better but some of the sketchiness remains. I'm not gonna trash the whole store for being there for a neighborhood others would prefer to see gentrified. They have a police presence on site every time I am there and a little patience could do some of these people a world of good. They can practice it in the long lines. I biked to Safeway to get my medication but this worker told me I couldn't enter with my bike. I said I'm too far away to walk and she said I don't care, you can't enter with a bike. I said I just need to get my meds, I really need them, can you just watch my bike for 3 minutes then ? and she said no. so I just went home. But I really need my meds and I don't know what to do. read more

I will give this Safeway a bonus is because it's been with the neighborhood for years through some many rough times, otherwise it's really a one star. The only reason I ever go to this Safeway is because it's right across the street from my house. This is the worst Safeway I've been to. There are 5 checkout lanes, but rarely more than two checkers and sometimes only one. There is almost always a long line. I waited 20 minutes in line tonight with only two checkers working and the line was all the way to the end of the aisle. I talked with the checker when it was finally my turn. She says they always complain about it but management is talking about cutting more hours and schedules more checkers during the day when it's slower. Time to fire the incompetent and inconsiderate management of this store! Aside from that, this is this Safeway is way overdue for a remodel. The selection sucks in comparison to the other stores and it's pretty dilapidated compared to the others on the area. read more

Customer service station does not open until 10, even though they are supposed to be open at 9. Even if they are open, they don't want to load Orca cards. Shelves are not well stocked, staff treats every customer with suspicion and disdain. This is not a good place, this community deserves better than this. read more

I think this store deserves some love. It is an asset to the community and the staff are very kind given everything they have to contend with. It is small and doesn't have everything you might expect at a supermarket. But it does have all of the basics and more - organic food, a pharmacy, etc. Would hilltop be better off without this store? I don't think so. Just wish corporate would help them out more with security and general operations. read more

This Safeway was recently remodeled. The manager who initiated the remodel and saw it through is from the area. He impressed me with his dedication to improving the area. Soooo...the store is somewhat better, but I can confirm that Safeway really does pick and choose where they send their better produce. The items here are really lower quality than other nearby Safeways...and Safeway produce ain't so great in the first place. This store does not have a bakery or deli, nor does it have much of a meat selection. We stop here because it's a convenient stop for class party supplies and the like. This place is not a destination stop by any stretch of the imagination, but you can get basics no problem. read more

My significant other was just in Safeway on 72nd and Portland Ave.in Tacoma he was treated very badly by the cashier. I shop there up to three times a week and have never experienced a problem except for I knew who he was speaking of. I spoke to management and to Dorien who both apologized with the promise that they would speak with this person. I believe she will improve and probably didn't know what to do or how to handle the problem. read more

By no means is this a glamorous Safeway even after the fresh model that just happened. The problem mainly lies with the bleak surrounding neighborhood and bleak parking lot that surrounds the building. Yeah, most people that shop there are low income, but that is Hilltop for ya. I shop here a lot since it's the closest place to my condo. I like that quite often stuff is cheaper at this Safeway. There isn't a deli or seafood section, so the choices aren't there, but that's the only drawback as I see it. read more

The customers who shop here make you slightly uncomfortable, it is in a bad spot of Tacoma. They are a smaller grocery store and do not have many options. Also be careful my debit card information was stolen from this location and I had fraud of $500 the next day. read more

Friendly staff who is more than welcome to help find anything you're looking, super clean store that is well maintained and has amazing deals. I love the easy, convenient location and the fact that they stock basically anything you could possibly need. Only draw back is parking can be a little hectic on a busy day after work/on the weekends. read more

It was like down hill at first when I went there, because there was this Manager whom checked out what I was getting from WIC stuff, and she was all rude! I look Asain but I am perfect with my English! And I know how to do math! She was scanning the food and talked to me like I was stupid. So I tried not to go in the Safeway often. But I have to because it's the closest place to get things I need. It has become better when I saw and met other people working there. When my little girl played and lost her one of her shoe, there was a manager who was working(I didn't know he was a manager afterwards) and I informed if anyone had found a baby slipper. He was really kind! The next day they had it displayed and I got her shoe back! So that made an awesome comeback of me starting to like that place. I still feel a bit bitter on some of the workers who is like, want their shift over with so they gave you a monotone look and voice like they care but sounds like they don't at all. read more

I live in this area and it is considered low income but it is improving. My frustration with the Safeway on the hilltop is they do not enforce their no loitering sign in the front of the store. The responsible neighbors in this area are trying to get trouble out of here and Safeway seems to care less that homeless beg for cash in their parking lot. I told an employee there was a begged out front she just laughed. The staff could care less about their jobs and the store is small. I want to support a hilltop business but it is difficult to do so when there is not a big selection and you are harassed by beggars walking in. I do stop by for small items. You gotta LOVE Ghetto-Way! The stories I could tell, I could write a book! Every time I go there during the daytime or evening I too, always get harassed in the parking lot by people asking me for money. My last time there, a guy told me he needed money to buy diapers for his baby. I have to admit that was a good one, hadn't heard that before. Usually it's cigarettes, food, gas, etc.. And if parking lot beggars aren't bad enough, twice in one visit I had people asking me for money INSIDE the store!.. and one of them was either on drugs, drunk or just out of her mind, but after I denied her request for money, she followed me through a couple of the aisles yelling obscenities at me..and when I'd turn around to say something she'd stop and pretend she was looking at something on the shelves. It was pretty funny.. and the employee I said something to, just told me to ignore her, she's harmless, The funniest thing though, was this one time I was standing in line waiting to check out, when this guy goes sprinting past the check out stand and out the door really fast. He was very noticeable, me and some other people were looking around wondering what was going on, figured he must have stolen something, and somebody would be after him any second.., but nope!... About 2 whole minutes later, a voice comes over the very LOUD speaker saying, "WE GOT A RUNNER!!" I'm not kidding you, I swear, every single customer in the front of the store who saw the guy, just busted out laughing! It was the funniest thing I'd ever seen...and STILL not one employee left the store to go after him, and the check out lady was so nonchalant about it, like it happens all the time, which I'm guessing it probably does. So even though the produce sucks, they don't have a deli or a pharmacy and the meat selection is bad, the Ghetto-Way is always entertaining! read more

Judge a book by its cover? Yep, that's what we exactly did. We are new to the area and yes, we knew exactly where we were. We have been to the nitty gritty of San Francisco and back and have yet to feel threatened. But right as we drove into the parking lot, we circled around the lot and turned right out. Now, don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with homeless people, but when there is a handful of people just chilling on the curb in front of the store, along with many many regular folks just "hanging" around in the parking lot, my walls automatically go up. I'm sure the inside is nice and people are friendly, but if I can't even get in the parking lot without feeling comfortable (and safe), I am more likely to not step foot inside the establishment. Needless to say, we left and opted for the Proctor Safeway and called it a day. read more

Yes... Hilltop isn't the best area in Tacoma, but I have no problems shopping at this store. They try to keep it safe as possible. As of the date of this post, they have a security guard who actually walks around the parking lot, helping to keep an eye on things. Some might say "it's so bad they need security guards!!!" but hey, at least they are trying. The guard I saw recently was friendly. I said "good afternoon" to him as I exited my car, seeing him nearby patrolling the lot on foot. He smiled and said so in return. When I left, he wished me a good afternoon and I said so back. The cashiers are friendly and generally speedy. The lines can be little long sometimes at busy times, but that just goes to show how many people DO shop there. It's a small store and they don't carry everything I buy frequently that the larger 6th Ave location does, but it's still good for the occasional quick trip for a few things I know they do carry. They are always busy with customers. I rated 4/5 since they do lack several items I often buy, but I get why they can't, due to the small store size. They are totally out of items sometimes, but that can (and does) happen at other Safeway locations too. read more
