Safeway Deli -- Where Sandwich Artistry Goes to Die (Sometimes) The person behind the counter assembling my sandwich appeared to be operating under one of two theories: either they were brand new to the concept of sandwiches, or they simply could not be bothered. What makes this particularly impressive is that the customer stands right there, watching the whole performance unfold in real time -- a live audience, and still, no effort. The deli experience is best described as a dice roll. Some days you get an employee who treats your lunch like a calling. Other days, you get someone who seems to view the sourdough roll as a personal adversary. Cutting a roll in half is not, I must stress, a surgical procedure. It is not splitting the atom. And yet. I ordered the grilled chicken breast, which -- when prepared by someone who has heard of the concept of "layering" -- is actually quite good. Sliced into four or five pieces, fanned out like they've watched even one cooking show. Instead, I received what appeared to be the entire breast, uncut, plopped down with the enthusiasm of someone filing their taxes. To their credit, the sandwiches are still a decent value. Which, honestly, is the only thing standing between this deli and a full spiral into chaos. Points for affordability. I have been ordering Safeway delivery for over 5 years. On Aug 29th, it was a hot day and I scheduled my groceries to be delivered 10-11 am When my $200, worth of groceries ALL THE COLD ITEMS WERE WARM $58, WORTH. I contacted safeway requesting a refund and was told it was denied...no discussion, just denied. I called the phone number supplied and once I realized the discussion wasn't going well, I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told there wasn't any...then I asked to speak to a manager, again told there weren't any managers available. So, I wrote to t h e manager at safeway, then to yelp, next to Sonoma County Public Heath, for serving spoiled food, then to NBC Consumer reports. Safeway will end up spending a lot more than $58. So a few days ago at the Safeway on Mendocino one of their security guards (a short lady with short black hair & glasses) her name is (Anna). She was the most disrespectful person I think I have ever came acrossed, especially when she was working. I went to Safeway to get a few things, it was about 8pm. Maybe a lil later, I walked in as I always do, said hella, smiled andoved on. I'm in the store maybe 2 mins. I notice she is falling me, so I let her do her job, because I wasn't doing anything for her to ever even wanna follow me. I never seen her ever before until that moment. . I get over by self checkout, she gets closer to me and I asked her "what's up, why are you following me?" She said "don't worry about it, and where is that red thing you had in your hand did you put it in your bag??" And she said it so rude and loud. I told her I didn't know what she was talking abt, I didn't have any red thing so I'm at the check out at this point I put my basket down to start scanning, she starts saying " what do you think you're doing ,you were caught stealing a year ago here and you are refused service" I said WHAT? FOR ONE lady I haven't lived here a year, and you just started here so what are you talking about??? She then ripped the basket out of my hand, mind you when I walked in I bought a few lotto tickets and I put them in the basket and she takes the who thing from me, hands it off, starts screaming that I'm a crack head drug addict ,calls me every name in the book, tells me to go. And I'm not gonna lie, I called her out of her name a few times, she was so disrespectful to me. So I walk out, she still is screaming this is what happens when you steal , and when you're a drug addict, look at this b**** she says. Everyone is like what is going on??? I was so confused, on what was even happening I was in shock she was very very out of line. Follows me all the way by gold coin, calling me a b**** now trying to get me to fight her!! I was shocked. Safeway has the best sheet cake. It's our favorite! Be sure to ask for real strawberry slices in the filling with jam and custard. The cake is soft and fluffy with delicious whipped topping. We love it so much we buy it plain-no decorations even when there's no occasion to celebrate! read more

This is more for the employees or future hires. Safeway management thought today was a good day to have a b***** session at self-checkout. First off started off with talking about being spit on by someone, then naming actual staff names of who was involved in incidents recently as well as saying all this why the checkout lines were filling with customers. HR should have a field day with the HR violations I heard from a manager who wanted everyone to hear how bad an employee was. Sorry but anyone who works there needs a better leadership group there, cause they are blasting out all your info right in front of us customers. This was unprofessional and very awkward for those of us who were at checkout. I really shouldn't expect much from Safeway hot foods but we were in a hurry on the 4th when we realized the deli sandwiches was closed. We got a good order of chicken nuggets instead and potatoe wedges. Once we got to eating our meal, the nuggets were still warm but tasted dry and horrible. Not even our 5 year old ate it. I made a quick stop before an appointment I had. There were no small hand baskets by the door so I had to use a large basket. I let them know and they said they were all by the other side of the store but would put some by the door I came in. The store was clean and the produce looked good. It is a lot nicer then the store in Rohnert Park. I was disappointed that they didn't have paper bags. read more

This place is actually trash. It's the most convenient location for me, but I'm done with it. The staff are constantly swearing (deli especially), the fruit/vege remains on the shelves when it's rotten (in fact, I've watched the staff restock new produce while leaving clearly rotten, molded produce next to it, and today I went to check out the sushi, which had rotten avo in it. I mentioned and the sushi roller kept insisting that it was still good. Also what's up with the c.e.o. admitting to price gouging and everyone still shopping here? I've watched security spot someone and turn their back as the person they spotted (their friend) walked out with a basket of stuff that didnt look like food. When it was brought to her attention that someone just walked outlwith merchandise, she started pointing to everyone and everything except for him. "OH, the person over there? (There wasn't anyone over there) Her? (she knew it was a man)" Another customer called her on being in on it with him. It was so obvious. Management and corporate know, but since Albertons bought out safeway, this location (and most others) don't really care about quality control. The parking lot is also unsafe. So this review is to try to HELP the management at this Safeway realize that changes must be made to improve the customer experience AND really more importantly, to improve health standards at the store! Markets- sure they are not exactly viewed on the same plane as restaurants. And yet we know many markets have in-house prepared food at a bakery, butcher, deli, etc. This particular Safeway does prepare a variety of in-house food options. Which brings me to my concern. This Safeway underwent a renovation and looked quite good inside. Clean looking and modern departments inside. So imagine when I decided to visit the facilities...and felt like I was somehow sucked into some Grimm Bros nightmare!! (As they say... pictures ARE worth a thousand words) The men's room was an absolute shock! It's as if it somehow managed to escape BEFORE it could be renovated! It was not only filthy...heck, filthy could actually happen at any time. The restroom was in total disrepair AND it was filthy!! So now I get that this is a fairly busy store. I get that there is a pretty large homeless contingent that lands here and spends large amounts of time in the store...but there is really no excuse to have such a wreck of a facility that families and children may use!! There were signs of long term neglect all around. And signs of a need for a DEEP clean and repairing and replacing of a variety of fixtures. The REAL shocker to me is that there is NO other restroom for employees. This means that we have to assume the Safeway employees and worse yet Safeway management actually uses this filthy restroom!! Wha? The store manager thinks this is okay? What about the general manager or regional manager? Don't they ever see this for themselves?? What do these photos of the Safeway restroom say about food safety and handling? After all, we not only buy most of our produce and other food from markets like Safeway, but what of the in-store bakery, the sandwiches, the sushi? What about the in store Starbucks?? Chances are the employees serving your "hot and fresh" are using this disgusting restroom to "clean up!" Ewwwww. I see why the rating are so low for this location, it's a shame what it's become since it WAS the top store. Granted when I worked there for 5 yrs it was shortly after it was built &had a solid Senior & Department management team. It's kind of serendipitous how things worked out my last 2 visits so I could have some reference. The other day I came in to this location to return a few items. I explained to the lady at the desk I had a receipt for some of them but not all of them. So I assumed I'd get store credit for the non-receipt items & cash for the items I had a receipt for. As I said I used to work for the company..for abt 20yrs until just recently, I'm quite familiar with the return policy. However, she gave me a full cash refund of about $30 I think..I offered to show her my receipt she said it was not necessary it was fine. However today, I dealt with someone else & waited in line for about 10 mins, there was only one person who was being helped when I walked in. When it was my turn I said I needed to return a card I purchased when I was there the other day. It was a Get Well card for my grandmother.. but she passed away before I could get it to her. I'm not going to re-gift this card to somebody else & it's no longer appropriate for any situations currently in my life. I don't want to hang on to it, it was meant for her. The booth clerk told me there are zero returns without receipts...I asked when did that policy start? She said that's always been the policy..I know that's not true. I told her that I've been with the company for 2 decades & that's not the policy nor has it ever been. She said she could get a manager but if we couldn't figure out which number it's under(my roommate changed it) then it can't be returned, I'm pretty much out of luck. She wasn't trying to be helpful, definitely wasn't knowledgeable. I'm not as surprised as I once was that they'd put somebody in charge of handling all the returns & not know the return policy. She did not offer store credit, she did not offer an exchange, just said "No." Safeway used to have a, "Just say yes"/find a way to say yes & make it right & the customer happy so they'll return policy.. it died apparently. Safeway was a great company, when it was Safeway..it's gone downhill in a hurry since Albertsons bought them out. Would not recommend their pick up and go grocery order system. I've had no problems at other local safeways but the people at the Mendocino Ave. location are thieves. Ordered three dozen donuts and they gave me three boxes with nine donuts in each box all arranged so you couldn't tell until you opened the box. Called and was offered a refund but it never went through. I also ordered four ribeye steaks on sale they gave me two regular ribeye steaks and one that was paper thin and something that had the same shape as a ribeye but was more like a bunch of meat glued together to look like one. They charged me four times for the largest steak instead of scanning each individual steak. So in one trip I was out at least twenty dollars that they stole from me by fraud. read more

I tried Safeway's grocery Pickup service, thought I would save time. I ordered multiple items, but the produce was sub-par. The strawberries were especially horrible. Giant mold and rot spots in both boxes and over half of the berries. It ended up taking more time to exchange the inedible berries than it would have taken to just shop myself. read more

I'm am so amazed at the bakery staff for this cake! I ordered a week and a half ago and they litterally did an amazing job with the detailing to this cake! My boy turned 5 on Oct 24 and wanted a Gecko cake from pj mask only the green guy and we were so shocked to see it in person! The Safeway Store at 3900 Mendocino has been plagued with many issues created by outside systemic problems in our area. Safeway continues to do the very best they can with their customer service. I order sheet cakes from their Bakery and I can't say enough for the excellent product and with Brittany at the helm taking my orders, I have just been totally pleased with the decorations and their theme as well as the quality of the cake and frosting itself. On the plus side, they're usually good about fixing mistakes and giving refunds. The problem is--the mistakes happen so often! Prices frequently come up wrong at checkout, digital coupons sometimes don't get applied and the curbside pickup, while helpful, is even worse! Whoever does the actual shopping doesn't take the time to find what's there, as it's easier for them to just say "out of stock" or sell you the wrong item. Just today I was given the 32 ounce sour cream when I asked for 16 oz (on sale); I ordered grapes at $1.48 per lb and was given the 3 lb box for $6 (not a huge price difference but I didn't want that many!); they said the whole milk yogurt was sold out, as well as the peanuts. And they charged me for an organic cucumber when I ordered a standard hothouse cucumber. When I went in less than an hour after picking up my order, every single item I wanted was there at the right price. Bottom line, if you really need specific things, you're better off going in yourself to buy what you want. Or being very specific about what kind of substitutions you'd accept--but even that doesn't always work. Ariel, the guy who does the curbside pickup is pleasant and efficient. Amanda, the checker is also helpful--not everyone else there is, though I understand it's a tough business at a tough time. I really wish they'd get it together. read more

First of all, Safeway had the highest prices around. No doubt. This particular Safeway, however, wins awards for the poorest customer service also. There are zero carts available - no one collects them from the parking lot. So, you have to find one yourself. This is not new. A staff member shrugged and told me " people steal them". Today in produce I walked around and tried to find some assistance. Two employees avoided me and walked away when they noticed I was approaching them ! Really ? This, also is not new. Lots of new people who don't want to even make eye contact, trying to avoid the customers as much as they can. They cashier never said hello or anything else. Stopped in here on the way to the hospital to pick up snacks and flowers. Yikes was it busy; all of the lines that were (six or so) open had five to six people waiting. There was no line for flowers, just one lady making an arrangement for the cooler. She said nothing to us the entire time we walked around looking for something appropriate, not even a smile. The blocked off area where you now have to purchase medications and personal hygiene items before exiting is a MASSIVE inconvenience and entirely confusing. There was no sign and we were berated by the staff for attempting to use the self checkout instead. When we needed further assistance getting the transaction approved the staff member literally chucked our medication onto the scale. Clearly customer service is the lowest priority at this Safeway, which I guess shouldn't surprise me that much but hey here we are shocked and frustrated. I always enjoy coming to this Safeway, because it's clean, the people are friendly, and they have everything that I came for. The Safeway is within walking distance of the place we stay when we are in Santa Rosa, and it's always nice and convenient when you forget something and can just run across the street to get it. I have never had a bad experience with the staff, and everybody has been super helpful. I mentioned before that the store was clean, and I don't mean clean like as in just swept clean. I mean clean like the floors had been scrubbed everything had been wiped down and it felt like the store was having its grand opening. I admire a place that takes pride in its cleanliness, and this Safeway really hit the mark. Bottom line? Last month I noticed that the gas prices were off by a Penny example I paid $30.00 but I only received $2.99.I did let them know about the pump error on pump #5.Now on June 13th I went to the same gas station and paid for $30 on Palm River five they were having problems with their Safeway rewards computer given savings to the customers there were several people complaining about that and they said that their computers were down all over that area they had to do with Safeway rewards so I gave them the benefit of a doubt but I went to public fine and pay for $30 but only got $29.99. just wondering out loud to the public is there anybody from Sacramento that would or could take a look at these people Safeway in Santa Rosa Mendocino cuz there's doesn't seem to be anything going on in rectifying it read more

This has to be the worst Safeway I've ever been too. I went to buy pomegranates and little did I know there were literal bugs inside of it.. every time I go to buy some vegetables or fruits I regularly see mold on the food. Like for instance the tomatoes I thought that after I told someone who worked there they would be more on it but they aren't. This is unsafe , unsanitary, and quite frankly disgusting.
