This is a review of the so called master decorators at the bakery. First we got an awesome two tier birthday cake at another Safeway, so we felt good ordering from here, but we were sorely mistaken. I almost feel sorry writing this, because the person who made the cake was probably forced to do it by the store, there is know way they could be this incompetent. Here is how bad the cake was; the icing barely covered the cake it was dirty iced at best, we asked that Happy Birthday be written on the side, so they wrote it on a piece of acetate and stuck it to the side of the cake, when asked about it, the the bakery lead simply stated they didn't have the skill to write on the cake and did this instead, and yes the writing itself looked like crap. All they offered to do was get a manger, but since they couldn't fix it what was the point. They didn't take the plastic liners off the cake topping figurines before putting them on, they just stuck them on the cake, so we couldn't take them off without making it look worse. They used whipcream icing instead of buttercream and it started melting, and last but not least they left the piece of cardboard between the tiers, we discovered this when cutting the cake. I get this is a grocery store cake, but really how incompetent do you have to be to put something like this out. And the bakery lead was a worthless in regards to customer service, she simply stated they couldn't fix it, and only when pressed acknowledged they didn't have a skilled decorator, and then could only respond that she would get me a manager, as if that would fix the cake. I have worked customer service, own it if your team messes up, but this person is the worse type of employee, incompetent in their job (letting a cake like this go out) and incompetent as leader not taking responsibility for your teammor department. Don't order a cake or anything from the bakery at the Prunedale Safeway, the incompetent customer service and worse than amateur product will only make you feel dumb for giving them you business. However, the Safeway Bakery on Del Paso in Sacramento is absolutely awesome. read more

On my way to San Jose to fly back to Chandler and wanted a couple snacks for the flight. picked a couple things but didn't have their club card with me and my number didn't work AND the items I picked were on sale. well the kid at the register didn't even offer to let me sign up and actually let me walk out the door without buying anything. Now that's someone that cares less about the company they work for... glad we have Fry's Marketplace in Chandler because I won't return to Safeway. read more

The people seem very nice generally, but the store is hindered in being so small. They don't have the selection needed. I'm sort of happy that they have vegan products, but seems they are going backwards not forward in products. Can't find what I used to find there. Always having to go into Salinas. read more

Most convenient place to shop if you live in Prunedale. I wish there were more options as Safeway's normal prices can be very high. Using the Safeway app does help when there are sales. I rarely buy things not on sale. I will wait for trips to Salinas/Marina/Gilroy to get things at Walmart or Target if I don't need the ingredient immediately. read more

Andrew, at the deli, clearly hates his job. He didn't look at me once, he stared down the entire time speaking, he threw the items onto my sandwich with no care. Also, when a customer asks for something specific on their sandwich , I do not expect the Deli worker to do whatever they please. Absolutely worst customer service EVER from Andrew. People are usually nice except for the tall dark guy who creeped up on me in the bathrooms talking about he knows me from instagram not cool and very unprofessional. This place is always short on items the fruit spoils 10x faster then anywhere else. (Years of buying here) I think the kick the produce of the truck because it is always bruised ALWAYS!!!! read more

I love this Safeway. It on my way home from work and is super convenient. Parking is always available, carts are ready to go and the store is well stocked. The butchers are ready to help with a special thick cut or offer advice on sales. Check out is rarely long and they call for more register help when needed. read more

Subpar to say the least. They are ALWAYS out of something we need. Recently it was yellow potatoes. The lines are too long and they rarely have help up front. And the checkers are soooooo painfully slow. The bakery cake decorators Are horrible. I was trained as a decorator at Nob Hill and if I put some of the same stuff out I would have been fired. I ordered one soccer ball cake. Easy enough and it didn't look like a soccer ball at all. read more

i am very. very. disappointed with the starbucks inside this safeway. the cashier was EXTREMELY ***** RUDE. seems like everytime i go the starbucks is workers are upset. i got a drink for me and my daughters and the lady THREW MY STRAW NOT EVEN A THANKYOU. this isn't the first time it happened. i love this safeway but i won't be returning. salinas workers are so kind and nice. sadly i can't say it about this one and i don't feel bad. maybe they should check who they are hiring before giving them the job. i don't know their name but this specific girl is always so rude even my 8 year old daughter asked why she threw her straw at her.never coming to this starbucks again. if i can give it 0 stars i would. read more

This used to be my convenient grocery store as I live here but now it's just a terrible place to shop. I don't know what is wrong with the store but it looks wiped out all the time. Seems like too many people from other cities come here and buy everything and it isn't restocked. It seriously looks like the place is on the cusp of going out of business. Who is in charge of ordering stock? Bare shelves everywhere. Maybe it's poorly managed. Tired of of seeing people from out of town raiding the store. One of the workers told me to "leave" my service animal "in the car next time" because he's not a "service animal" when I told RONDA!!! That I would provide paperwork and everything to prove that he is a CERTIFIED service animal, but she insisted on being mrude about it and didn't want to see the paperwork as I'm on my way out RONDA!!! And the night shift manager were insisting that he is not a service animal but a "comfort animal" once again he's a CERTIFIED service dog so for them to decline my paperwork and not know my condition for having a service dog also make me feel uncomfortable at my local grocery store read more

Really bad customer service, the cashier was rude and unprofessional. She was nice to the previous customer but not to me, didn't greet me at all and even gave me an evil look like I have cooties or something. Makes me think she's a racist ignorant Trump supporter, because I am Hispanic and the other customers were white. I usually prefer Safeway wherever I'm at. I'm new to this area and this Safeway is a bit different then Seaside and Carmel so I'm just getting a feel. It seems like many of their selections are fewer, I'm thinking maybe the store itself is smaller? I like it I will continue to go there. read more

It the hotspot in Prunedale. Not only can you shop for you food get a mean deli sandwhich but hey they even have wi-fi! and ever since the remodel safeway seems to be getting even better, and it is the neighborhood grocery store so everytime you shop you are bound to bump into someone you know. Plus on fridays they have a $5 meal deal which is pretty awesome! read more

This store is a joke! It's consistently under-staffed. I always hear a checker calling over the loudspeaker for more checkers which falls on def ears. The staff doesn't seem to be the friendliest. It appears that a lot of them are pretty miserable. The store for the most part is pretty clean. The selection of products is just ok. Based on where the store is located, you won't find fresh lobster or caviar here. The produce department could use some help. It's constantly out of product and you really need to watch the dates on some of the produce that comes in packages. I have on a number of occasions seen outdated product on their shelves. The staff in that department isn't all that friendly either. All in all there isn't much of a choice of grocery stores in Prunedale and Safeway knows it. I don't go here very often as Safeway in general tends to be a little pricier than some of the other grocery stores in Salinas. This is where I am taking off one star. However, I've noticed the times I have been here, everyone (the workers and shoppers) is extremely friendly and helpful! Just walking through the same aisle towards an employee (not really even making eye contact with him), he says hi to me. As I browse the meat section, a butcher asks me if I need help, not once, but twice, and then suggests that I buy the larger meat pack because it's cheaper, and that he would gladly separate the pack into two so that I can freeze one of them. A customer insists that I go in front of her in line since I have less items than she does. Maybe it's just the small town charm of Prunedale, but I know that I will always a delightful experience at this Safeway! read more

This store is centrally located for those living in Prunedale. It is right off highway 101. The store is always clean and the staff is always friendly. the prices are decent, there are some other grocery stores in other cities that are cheaper, but for the Prunedale area it is the best. The only problem I have with this location is in the evening they only have 1 or regular lane and 1 express lane open, occasionally they will open another one up. This causes long lines and long waits. this location does have a small star bucks inside and has a great deli department. The parking is great. They also have a Wells Fargo inside. I have never had a problem with expired food or poor quality of items at this location. Over all this is one of the better Safeway's I have been to. read more

Here's our little guilty pleasure. Friday's they have $5 pizza. So, we bring it home, add some veggies, make some pesto and drizzle it on top. Stick it in the oven for 15 min or so. And, presto. Awesome homemade pizza, well sort of. LOL! read more

First of all, the staff is really nice. The one star is not for them, but for the service. There are never enough check stands open, ever. Everyone knows how busy this location is, and yet they never have more than 2, or 3 check stands open. Quite frequently they only have 1 open. They don't even call for help until the lines are 10-15 deep. Always full of excuses about staff call-offs. I actually think they don't schedule them, because no way do they have this many call-offs daily. A few months ago they tried to follow the service that Raleys/Nob Hill offers. They put up a sign stating that if there were 3, or more people in line they would open another one. This was absolutely hysterical, because that sign disappeared within 2-3 days. They have terrible service, and I'm sure they know this. They are the only game in town, and I'm sure they know this too. read more

It's unfortunate that the sandwiches here are so good and such a great price because every time I'm here I can count on waiting 45 minutes while a poorly trained employee struggles to put my sandwich together. A few reviews here mention that the place is under-staffed, and I will agree. I've lived in Prundeale off and on for 25 years and have watched a few cycles the store has gone through. It was once a little cheaper (in *real*, inflation-adjusted dollars), and more people proportionate to Prunedale's population used to shop there. It was properly staffed and lines didn't back up. Then they remodeled several years back, jacked up prices a bit across the board, reduced staff a bit, and a fewer people shopped there. Now there are typically only 1-3 checkers staffing the registers, and people come in in periodic swarms, usually only buying a few items. Yet their checkout lines are ultra short, causing people to crowd around the open registers like cattle. The store itself is nice, has most of the essentials (but a lousy foreign food section) and parking is never an issue. Staff used to seem more friendly. They're okay now, but seem really stressed out and unhappy. Maybe management needs improvement? Please, Prunedale Safeway, get it together! Take out 50-75% of your registers if you're not going to staff them, and in their place put a snaking rope aisle (in vein of bank teller lanes or airline boarding lines) so customers aren't backed up haphazardly into the grocery aisles. It's not fun having to ask everyone which lane they're in, who's behind who, etc. As the store is now, I prefer to do my bulk shopping elsewhere, and only come for a few odd items when I don't want to drive out of town. read more

I have ordered many cakes from others places and by far Safeway in Prunedale makes the best cakes... You have to try their vanilla or chocolate cake with whip cream and fresh strawberries filling, it's delicious. Now I volunteer to buy any birthday cake just to try their cake . Ok I realize the power was out for days last week, thats awful, I would like to think that you dumped ALL of the frozen food????? Well I assure you the frozen peas I got there yesterday had defrosted and been re frozen, its veg its ok i will manage, but as a local from now on i will just drive to Gilroy instead. The butchers are a joke, where did Jason go, who actually cared? I have tried to order meat that will 'be in tomorrow' 'it didn't turn up' 'come back tomorrow' 'its on on order but it didn't show try again tomorrow'............Guess what I really do have a life that does not involve driving to the store every day for a product I can but in Gilroy, daily! The manager if you ask him says 'noted, I will sort it' he never does. Absolutely disgusted that you really either did re stock 'defrosted food' or your delivery arrived before the freezers were up to speed, lets hope it was only the veg, as meat could potentially kill someone! This Safeway is a little small, so if you need full variety, pick the Gilroy Safeway or the Salinas Constitution Ave Safeway. Otherwise, if you only need the basics and a few impulse items, this store fits the bill nicely. There's a middle-aged blond cashier that is extra friendly and sincere. She is an artist...ask to see her pictures. But not if I am in line behind you! read more
