I typically shop at this Safeway when I am in a pinch because it is close to my work. The store is always clean and well stocked. The Starbucks is pretty good here too. Customer service tends to be nonexistent though. Easy to get in and out of but the parking lot is chaotic. read more

When the virus happened Safeway and other companies started providing delivery services. For several weeks they did a good job with it. But the past five times we've used them has been just about awful. More missing items, which makes no sense: WHY would a store with a butcher be unable to provide TWO steaks? And WHO would think sugared drinks are a proper substitute for SUGAR FREE drinks? Not only THAT the store FORCED us to keep the drinks, and said someone else would pick them up-but they didn't. Not ever. Today, we're waiting for a delivery that was called in yesterday afternoon and promised for EARLY this morning, and calling for an update, we learn that the order wasn't processed, and are starting all over again. read more

The ambiance is terrible: the place is very cold and you keep hearing on loud speakers someone calling up numbers! It sounds like a prison ward. The lines at the cashiers are always very long and the self-checkout computers break all the times. They use to have some European food but they cancel it all. This is the last place to go if you are about to die of hunger. read more

The Menlo Park Safeway on El Camino advertises curbside pickup. Staying out of stores is part of what we're doing to keep the virus contained. We're 77 and 82 years old and at elevated risk so I ordered groceries on-line for pickup.  The email receipt I got for the order said to call the number posted at the pickup point. We couldn't find that point. Getting out of the car I was told to go inside to Customer Service. That was exactly what we were trying to avoid. At Customer Service the agent could not provide the number to call nor would she call the manager for me. After standing around for five or ten minutes and getting no help, I was rescued by a checkout clerk who wrote down the order number. Five minutes or so later the order appeared. If Safeway can not provide a service safely, they should not be allowed to provide it at all.  The Menlo Park Safeway checkout clerks had no protection. At Cardenas across from Ikea they have a plexiglass shield. Cardenas has a senior and first responder hour and I saw workers cleaning produce. It seems to me a safer way to shop. /b read more

Not sure why the ratings are this terrible for this one branch. Clearly the people complaining about the lines haven't been to any in Redwood City. I go here when I can because it's a decent step up from the notorious Jefferson Station one (hello mean verbally abusive cashiers, atrocious bathrooms, hella lines and actual fist fights over said lines!), but I don't get a chance to enough. Most of the time I'm at the helm of what's closest to my house. I've been coming here sporadically since I was a grad student at the Farm, and it's never too terrible. Pros: It's on El Camino. Quick and easy escape to a main artery which is vital in this awful traffic these days. Lines are shorter than what you'd get at Jefferson Station, Woodside, or Mountain View. I'm saying this based on what I've seen at evening rush hour. Or maybe all the fine folks who live near this Safeway don't work and don't shop simultaneously at 5PM, who knows. I thought I was dreaming when I got in and out of a self-checkout line in less than 5 minutes. There was no line! Apparently everyone here enjoys getting groceries scanned by real humans. I'll take it! Plenty of parking, but caveat (see below). Cons: Plenty of parking but cramped and the traffic logic ain't the best. Getting back onto ECR Northbound is impossible from the front of the lot, you will need to use the side exit of the lot (towards Unleashed) and wait at the traffic light. read more

This incident actually occurred on Sunday, September 16th at approximately 7:35pm. I approached the Deli section to find a woman (Hispanic/Spanish) cleaning the outside windows of the counter where the hot food was being kept. She was using Windex (or some other clean solution) plus plenty of hard hand work to get the cleaning job done. I stood there for a few minutes and, in perfect English she finally asked "do you need help?" To this I replied "Yes". The young lady, who wasn't wearing a name badge, walked behind the counter, put her cleaning solution down, approached the hot food counter, opened the hot panel, and stuck her hand in the HOT FOOD! to get MY roast chicken. Baffled, I say "I'm sorry, you need to wash your hands". She then stated " Me no speak English". Shocked, because, in perfect English she asked me if I needed help, understood I wanted the roast chicken, but apparently that's where her English stops? I ask her to call the manager and she again states "Me no speak English". After standing there...with a look...and a few others jumping in to help up walks Paula. Paula is the person in charge for the night, according to her. I explained the entire situation to her and, while Paula agreed that she should have washed her hands she still did nothing to correctly rectify this situation. She apologized and said "maybe she just needs more training", to wish I agree, but what about the chicken that should be tossed out because: 1:She handled it without gloves and tongs 2: She did NOT wash her hands before touching said chicken. While Paula was nice and agreed to what I stated- I, as a customer, shouldn't be informing the person in charge, manager, or the worker how to properly handle this kind of situation. They did NOT throw the chicken out/away and served it as is. This used to be my go-to lunch when I didn't have my own and we placed large orders regularly, however.... I have no idea why these boneheads freeze their apple pies smh. I literally have to buy it a day in advance and let it thaw for 24 hours. There is absolutely no reason to keep it locked up in the freezer. I get the same pie at Ralphs and other grocery stores and they are not sitting in the freezer and ready to serve. I am compelled write about the nicest person that I met today whose name is Rich. He is the new manager at the store and he came from the Belmont location. He was not on only extraordinarily helpful but very pleasant. He told me about this Safeway 12 days of Christmas specials which included $.98 honey bunches of oats!!! I tried the SAFEWAY delivery for the first time and I will never do it again. I even paid extra to have groceries delivered between 8am-10am. They say to call this number or go to the website for order status. The website only shows that you placed an order and when it should be delivered. But it doesn't show any information regarding where it is when it is past the delivery time. On the website it give this number to call however I have been on hold this entire time. Horrible experience with the cashier. I am not sure if he's racist or something but this is the 3rd time we encountered him giving us attitude. His name is Keith. He was very joyful, talkative, and he even bagged the stuff of the customers in front of us but when it was our turn, we said hello! How are you. He NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED, didnt bag the groceries we got. It was dead silent. He was throwing my groceries after scanning. He then proceeds to cross off his name on the receipt. (He used a pencil to cross it off so we were able to erase and see his name) I can't believe this is still happening. One encounter i had with him was pre- pandemic. A friend of mine (who happens to be the same race) also had the same experience. After giving me my receipt, he says HI HOW ARE YOU to the next customer. Whaaat? Horrible horrible experience. The pharmacy here is unhelpful. Tried calling 4 times to inquire if they have the current Covid vaccine as their website doesn't make that info available. The option to talk to a staff member only goes to a recording and if you leave a message you won't get called back. On a fluke I actually got to talk to someone who said their supplies are limited so they aren't announcing the availability. Good luck trying to get an appt online. There are 4 pages of info required and after supplying all that I got a message saying the appt was no longer available. I'll gladly go somewhere else next year for my pharmacy needs. read more

Your typical Safeway. The place is really convenient because it's near Stanford, where there are tons of college students needy for groceries. There are complaints about the lines and management here, but on a normal afternoon with a moderate crowd, the efficiency is fine. This Safeway is really awesome. They are stocked with a wide variety of items. Was staying in the area and picked up some snacks, beer and a box of magnesium salt for a bath. There are a bunch of high quality items and their alcohol section is well stocked. But I had a very troubling experience in the parking lot. I was shopping late at night. I had just come from a company party. There was a Tesla Model X that was parked a few spaces from mine with a couple of white women in their mid 60s? One was a skinny tall blonde and the other was a short and wide, with a gray flat top haircut. Skinny Tall was smoking a cigarette and nodded at Gray Flat Top. Gray Flat Top had a deep voice. "this isn't MAGA country. wtf is your problem wearing that junk in our town." I was confused and said "excuse me?" Skinny Tall was equally as deep, but more raspy, probably from the cigarette smoking. "The red shirt. This isn't MAGA country." She flicked her cigarette at my car tire. The cigarette erupted in sparks and fizzed out in a small puddle of antifeeze. I kind of laughed inside and explained to them that it was my company shirt and that I had just come from a company party. I even pointed out the logo showing them that isn't wasn't a "MAGA" shirt. I must have been smirking while saying this because they got super upset and really got into my personal space. Then, Skinny Tall said "we'll see about that" and looked over her shoulder. She yelled out to a third person that was sitting in the back seat of the Tesla X. "SAM!!!" The Falcon Wing Doors slowly started to rise and what seemed to be a giant body started expanding itself out of the car. It was another woman. She was about 6 feet tall and was very muscular. Almost a body builder I would say. She started approaching me with intent and I started to panic. I reached into my bag and punctured the box of magnesium. I grabbed a handful in anticipation. As she closed her distance and started reaching for my throat, I chucked a fist full of the magnesium directly at her face. Six Feet Tall took a few steps back and started screeching that her eyes were burning. I swear I can see smoke rising from her face, but I think was hallucinating from the adrenaline. Now I have to stop here because the next part of the story gets ultra violent, but I end up fighting for my life and I am able to share this story with you all. I've lived in California most of my life and been to Safeway's all over the bay- this hands down has the worst lines/wait of any I've been too. It's close to my house- so I've been here at all hours and every day of the week and the lines/wait times are always abhorrent. Being Totally honest I don't think I've ever seen the line not starting in the aisle. If you go when it's less busy they staff way less cashiers so again, in the aisle. It's a really good one to avoid if possible. read more

I don't know how this Safeway has made it this far without it's yelp page. Especially with the current frustrating issues with this location. I originally wrote a review on this location on it's pharmacy page, but the store in general needs a refresh! This Safeway location in general - horrible management which has led to nonexistent customer service. We have lived in the area close to a year and this is less than a mile from our home. Super convenient right? Wrong!!! Never have we made it out of this location without waiting at least 15 minutes in line. This is absurd. At first I thought we were going at busy times of the day, so we started going later at night. Turns out they leave 1 or 2 cashiers open and close the self check out lanes after 10 pm and so the lines don't go away. Not to mention you gotta battle through the restocking guys in every isle at this time of the night. Not a solution to the problem of this location! This is a nice and rather pricey grocery store - the equivalent of publix in the southeast. They really should start acting like that and start trying this thing called customer service. Otherwise, why would I shop here if I can get everything for less at Walmart for equivalent customer service? Seriously I suggest hiring one extra employee at night to handle the self check outs - that will at least solve your night shift problems easily read more

Just in case you can't tell the sign says that they do custom cuts for all occasions. So I asked for thick cut bacon in which case I was told that they can't do that we have some prepackaged ones around the corner well if I wanted prepackaged ones and by the way these were not thick cut, I would have not gone to the actual butcher section so like the sign says they won't fail you they in fact did fail me big time. Good job Safeway for falling short of all expectations. Another big company that cares nothing for their customers. Union jobs are for people who can't get jobs and can't keep jobs. I was told this once and apparently it is true. Because of the service I received at Safeway to confirm this. Never in my life have I dealt with people who care absolutely nothing for their customer. Plus they have a handicap section where they have absolutely no lights and homeless people that throw things at you when you try to get back into your car yes I am handicapped. I tried to tell somebody inside Safeway and Alls they told me was perhaps you should call the police I'm not sure but I think we are at Safeway's property they might want to care about the safety of the customers that always come into their store but apparently they do not. read more

Sadly, this Safeway feels like every other Safeway: long lines at the checkout stand. I try to avoid Safeway's at all costs because of this. I only come when I need items that I know a large chain supermarket like this would have that smaller ones do not. The selection of goods is excellent and as usual there's a lot of parking. Produce is pretty good quality and same goes for the meats. The aisles are always pretty well stocked. It's just a pain to have such a good selection of goods only to be waiting almost 25 minutes in line. It's a combination of not enough cashiers and maybe slow cashiers too. And then even at the U-Scan area, the machines always seem to have problems and the attendant doesn't attend to them quick enough. Come here if you need a specific item, if not, try to avoid Safeway. read more

WOW!! Some UNBELIEVABLE Safeway Manager anger here!! HORRIBLE!! Jamie, the front end Manager (per the Customer Service lady when asked - he has slicked back greyish hair), yelled at me VERY aggressively after I set my own bags on the counter to bag my own groceries as requested by the cashier. Rather than nicely tell me that the county has apparently put a new rule in that does not allow setting personal bags on the counter, he chose to scream at me and storm off! Jamie, the manager, could have simply explained it and I would have happily obliged, which I did anyhow after he got done screaming at me. (The new rule is not posted visibly anywhere and I was unaware of as I have not been to my home here since March). Jamie, a little kindness in these times goes a long way! And if the county is so concerned about setting personal bags on the counter, and having customers bag their own groceries to their bags, then it is probably a much safer idea to have all of your cashiers wear rubber gloves when they touch my groceries, Makes no sense that they touch everything with their hands, then stand and watch customers bag their food. I'll suggest it to the county as a new rule! I'd give NO STARS (but 1 is the minimum) as this experience was so awful.. and I am a positive person that is very unlikely to complain.. but Jamie was insulting and rude, rather than helpful and kindly explaining the rule, as he could have chosen to do. With big selection, superb fruit, veges and produce, and an excellent wine section that is a bargain, this Safeway would seem to be 5-star worthy, but it has a fatal flaw. The staff are nice and try hard to help you find what you need, but there aren't enough of them. This Safeway has constant, long lines unless you go in the middle of the night. There "three's a crowd" promise is a joke with lines regularly to the aisles. Time is money, so instead of wasting time here, I'll go spend more money at Draegers. read more

Indeed, last week I was pretty much forced into buying six bottles of vodka that I really did not needed. Alcoholism is a big problem in America, please do not force us to buy more alcohol than we really want/need. Some offers are hard to turn down; who wants to pay $8 for a bottle of Vodka when the store is offering six of them for $30. It has become the DMV of grocery stores. Biggest problem are the lines. Not enough cashiers. And a few of those cashiers are inefficient. Probably From being overwhelmed. Customers always seem to have an issue at checkout. Its agonizingly slow to buy something. Self checkout works well 20% of the time. Other times, it's a nightmare. I go to Draegers, pay almost double, and leave happy. But I'm shopping just for myself. Selection and prices are usually good. Often out of stock of specific items. I've been several times since it's cheap, but I'll look for the same product week after week and its still out of stock. read more

Oof - not sure about the general customer service here, but the New York cheesecake they have in the bakery is to die for! Rich, creamy, but still light enough for me to want to keep going back for more. It looks small, but was enough for about 8 people, with leftovers! I think the cake and the wide selection of cheeses and high quality ingredients here are my favorite - otherwise I would also have to agree with the other reviews on the customer service. It's a supermarket, so I don't expect much from it overall. I've come here a number of times to buy a variety of things from the bakery and cheese section, and I like that they're available and open pretty much all day and night. Everything is very clean! It's typical Safeway - I'm not ever really a huge fan because they're all the same. Same long lines, same overpriced everything, same cramped isles where 2 people can't walk down the same isle. I have yet to go to a Safeway that doesn't have a line of people (blocking previously said small isles) to checkout. It's really frustrating. I also hate that Safeway feels like their products - with the SAME label as other grocery stores are somehow entitled to be more expensive - yet - most Safeways are still packed, so clearly people still overpay for things. Albeit, this Safeway does have a lot of Gluten Free options which is nice. They have a little sushi station where they make fresh sushi, which is nice to grab for a quick lunch. They have a sandwich deli area to purchase sandwiches and they carry the tasty Boars Head deli meet. I also bought a few bulk bagels and was pretty impresses with the quality. Its things like that I can justify paying more for, but not 25% more for the same loaf of bread I can get at any other grocery store. read more

So. I needed curbside pickup as my kid is sick. We are trying to be safe. This review vis strictly for CURBSIDE pickup. Ordering online was simple and the prices seemed the same. I was ordering around 2 but no pick ups until Sunday, OK. I get my text the next morning. I luckily found the curbside spaces (there were no directions as to where the designated spaces are). PRO: the spaces have a number and the number to call to get your groceries CON: no one picked up the phone. (keep in mind I have a sick child at home with no other parent) Finally I call the main #. I am passed over to someone. I open my text to get my order # it's not on the text. I search my email. It takes a few minutes. I am told not to worry they have my name. I find the order # (which does not have Safeway in the title or email) and give it to the person. 10 minutes (which ok, I assume they are picking up eggs and milk then?) Except now there is a man at my window motioning me. He needs my driver's license because I didn't give my order # which I did. Fine. OK. Miscommunication. He puts groceries in the trunk. At home - milk and eggs randomly thrown in no bag. Eggs broken. Bags not packed neatly. I don't require perfection but seriously. So, this review is specific to CURBSIDE pickup. I shop here regularly and have excellent service inside the store. I don't blame the young man who brought the groceries out because I suspect he wasn't trained. read more

Accidentally posted this to the wrong Safeway location - reposting to Menlo Park location. The wine department at this store is 5 stars and the man who runs it is incredibly helpful! The floral department used to be my go-to place to buy hostess gifts and arrangements for my own home. However, I just had an incident in with the floral department that was so unfriendly that I won't be visiting this store again any time soon. Last weekend was prom for almost every Menlo Park high school. My son had a very last-minute prom invitation (as many a 16 year old does!) so I went to Safeway figuring they would be the most likely to accomodate a last-minute corsage request the day before the prom. The floral section was surprisingly empty as I entered the store and the first thing I noticed was a large sign on the counter that ALL PROM ORDERS MUST BE PLACED EARLY. As I am a weekly floral customer there I thought I would ask nicely if they could do a simple white rose corsage for me -- and the lady just laughed. Yes -- we would all love to place our prom orders weeks in advance, but sadly Prom brings out the last minuteness in many a teenager. Safeway wouldn't have had the need for the rude, rude, rude sign if there weren't a lot of desperate Menlo Park moms running to the store they thought would rescue them! This desperate corsage rush must happen every year -- Safeways's floral team should just make up an extra-large batch of corsages and have them at the ready -- playing hero for their tried and true customers rather than laughing at them. This formerly loyal Safeway floral customer would have really appreciated it. But the good news is I found a really nice florist in San Carlos who went out of her way to make a special corsage for me -- and win my floral business form now on! read more

Well, other folks give it a low grading. I've been shoppin here for a while. I ain't ever had a bad experience. These folks that work here at all hours of the 24 hr day do so honorably in my opinion. If the bathrooms are ever messed up it's only a product of those whom abuse them. I work in the alcohol industry and their prices best most. I come here for wine/spirits before Anyone else.
