Since the onset of Covid, and the offering of curbside pickup, Safeway has become my go-to place to get good groceries at decent prices. I'm mobility impaired, autoimmune suppressed, and the only driver in my home. While it is not error free, Safeway's online shopping frees me from getting stuck partway when the scooter cart runs out of power part way, limits my exposure to ill shoppers or staff, and gives me a lot of digital coupons, members prices, and redeemable points thereby allowing me to get free or deep discounted items, dollars off meat or produce, or a significant reduction at the nearby Safeway gas station. I only wish these curbside/delivery options had been available when I was younger, working long hours and often having to shop with young children, thereby eliminating the hangry temper tantrums, sore aching feet and back after a day in high heels, and dreading every shopping trip that involved kids who weren't enamored with my grocery list. The online shopping app or website both allow you to choose substitutions if your first choice isn't available. I just added their Fresh Pass which gives free delivery (but a tip for the driver is required and only appropriate) because I have shoulder surgery this week and won't be able to drive for months. So, whether you are looking for a way to avoid dragging your kids through a grocery store, have health issues that make in person shopping difficult, or just want a solid way to save your time, I recommend Safeway, especially the Philomath branch for upbeat employees and a manager who truly listens when there's a problem! read more

I have stepped into Safeway for the last time. Convenient location; bad experiences. Yesterday was the last one for me, and that's OK. It took me an hour to buy one thing. It took a cashier and a manager to complete the sale. They didn't honor a discount. I should have just left, but then I would have forfeit my bottle return voucher. There was only one check stand open. There weren't many people in line, but hoo boy, they should have taken down the "express" sign because it took ten minutes to ring up the first customer. The cashier might have been challenged. The customer had a box of energy bars, all the same. The cashier apparently didn't know how to use the button that lets you ring up multiples of the same item. He scanned one. He tried to scan the next, but it wouldn't scan. He scanned the first one again. He tried to scan the next two; they wouldn't scan. He scanned the first one two more times. This kept going until he had scanned it a dozen times. Then the cashier had trouble taking payment. Hmmmm. Next person didn't take as long to ring up two avocados and some tortillas, but payment still seemed challenging. My turn. I am almost 60 years old, so I'm always impressed when I get asked for my ID to buy beer. But once you see my ID, you don't need to take five minutes to scrutinize it and find the numbers to plug into the register. Well, this person did. Whatever. I should have gone to the self-check-out line. I didn't because they can't accept bottle return vouchers, and they have to call a manager. Still would have been faster. They had two employees staffing the self-check-out line. One could have got on a register.... Anyway, apparently the cashiers now aren't allowed to accept bottle return vouchers, so the cashier had to call a manager over. And we waited. I felt bad for the person behind me. The manager took my voucher away for a while and came back with some scribbles on it. Then, as usual, it didn't ring up with the full amount of the voucher. It always has to be fixed manually; I'm used to that. So we have to call the manager over again. The manager took me over to customer service where he ran around back and forth apparently looking for something. He told me that the voucher can't be used for deposits. I told him that's not what it was being used for. I would still owe money. He said the voucher wasn't allowed for my purchase, and he pointed to the fine print on the voucher. I read it. It just said it was not valid for gift cards. He said it was not valid for my purchase, but could not find anything in writing to say so. I asked him to put the value back in my bottle return account, which of course he can't do. He said I could bring the voucher back some time and use it for a different purchase. That means I'd have to hold it and hope the ink didn't wear off which it would. Against my better judgement, I just made the purchase. At least it only took me an hour to buy a half rack of tasty beverage. My usual grocery had the same item for sale at a lower price. If I could have just taken my voucher there I would have, but it said Safeway on it. I won't be spending my money here ever again. The other two Safeway stores have a much larger selection of items, but they aren't as convenient, and they also don't seem to be able to get enough staff to run the cash registers and get customers out in a timely manner. I won't say that this is the worst grocery in town. There's another one I gave up on YEARS ago and won't go back there either. Awful. Just awful. read more

Yesterday this Safeway have a re-grand opening day because they just recently remodeled. I went to the preview party yesterday because on their ad they mentioned free samples and there was a booklet filled with 'free' coupon items. So why not? These were the things I noticed: - They added more light, the place is now brighter. - Newer signage and much cleaner. - A lot of the stuff got shifted around and group together. - The parking lot arrows are repainted. - Customer service is now on your left instead of on your right. - Etc. [+] Those were the changes I'd noticed, not why I gave them a 4 star. The main reason why I gave them a 4 star is because of the great customer service they provide. I went in there to purchase contact lens solution and a few other things, but of course I can not find them. So I asked the near by store employee. She stopped what she was doing (she was stocking the eggs) and instead of telling me the aisle number, she actually led me to the exact location of the item! I really appreciate it when they actually show me where things are because I hate it when someone tells me, "it's on aisle #5, on your left side, next to the mayo" Oh right, like I know where the mayo is!?! ugh. Not only her, but I did that to a few other employees, not to test them, but I really didn't know where things were! Same thing, extremely nice and helpful! [-] The only bad thing I would have to say is don't go in there during the night shift. I had to go back there the same day, (but at night) because the computer for some reason didn't rang up the promotion saving deal for the ice cream I purchased. I was literally standing by the customer service desk for like 7-10 minutes and I was not acknowledged by anyone at all. I had to go ask a nearby cashier, if someone could help me. Night crew lack good customer service. Safeway prices are a bit pricey, but shop with coupons, so it's not a big deal for me. They occasionally have the 'double your manufacturer coupon' which helps with the groceries. ((It could be that they had a grand re-opening, that might be why everyone needed to be on their best behavior. LOL I will come back and update if the customer service went downhill in the near future.)) read more

WORSE checkout EVER!! They have self checkout which had a line of at least 10 people waiting, one checker had a line of 6, I went to the LAUGH 15 items or less line-the man ahead of me had 2 items, I had 7 the 3 other people in this line HAD full carts!! Both very slow checkers called once in a 15 to 20 minute period for an extra checker which appeared 15 minute later AND took the people who JUST GOT IN LINE! I gave up on my line THAT HADN'T moved in 15 minutes seemed to be a problem and the checker was not proactive just stood there with a confused look. I got in the new lane and Parmdol (sorry spelling) couldn't move an slower. The poor man with 2 items in the EXPRESS LOL line was still in line when I left. Ad I said I was in line for 20 minutes!!! 3.5 stars. I could get used to this re-opening of this store although it is a little smaller than the one down on Philomath. I avoided this place at all costs... the produce looked so old it was gross. The lettuce was frail and floppy, the tomatoes were pretty much orange, and the atmosphere in general just did not feel very welcoming. I'm really glad they did a whole upgrade including the parking lot because the whole shabaam needed it if this place was going to survive in these uncertain times. Although I'm not sure if it was because it's still in it's grand re-opening state that there were more employees than I've seen before and that everyone was extra helpful. I was in the express lane finishing up my order, then the cashier was nice enough to let this couple with a cart and a half of groceries to go through her lane. Okay. Why on earth did they have a whole cart and a half of groceries?? Dare I ask?? Well... who the hell knows but they came armed with coupons and the coupon book that was mailed out to all of Corvallis. One gripe is that the parking spaces feel narrower!! what the hell? Way to clean up Safeway, a job well done. read more

This store totally sucks. I want to make a point though. There are many reviews about the customer service being lacking here, and while I agree, I don't see it as the fault of the employees. If I worked somewhere as thankless and lackluster as this store I would be just as jaded. Don't give your money to this place. Unusually dirty and slow for a Safeway, unfortunately it's the only grocery store close to South Corvallis and the University besides the Co-op. I avoid it if possible but sometimes the convenience factor makes it too hard to go somewhere else. read more

A cashier tried to scam me today. He had his thumb on the scale and wanted to charge me for 3lbs of mushrooms, not 1lb. And $5 for one orange! I was debating to go into this Safeway today becasue last time I went had a bad experience. The cashier (white female mid-aged on check stand 1) is to be avoided. She seems to be lashing out/ power tripping on people becasue of the Covid-19 situation. I went in and tried her line thinking I could avoid her rudeness. I was very carefull to put my items on hte belt from the very back as that was what she remarked to me rudely last time about. I was also carefull to stand where she pointed at with extended arm and said STAND THERE last time. I thought I as doing everything right but I guess I was not behind the screen enough. She makes sure to do the STAND THERE routine again this time. I move and I think my face was revealing as she says IF YOU DONT LIKE IT THERE IS SELF CHECKOUT. I can tell she was just trippin becasue of internal dis-content. Thank goodness for YELP for an outlet. Safeway is lame, overpriced, overcrowded. Go to the farmers market. read more

This store is absolutely the worst. I have gone into this store the last few times and have left empty handed due to they don't have what you need. The service sucks you have to stand in line for ever behind a dozen people waiting to check out with only I checker in the store after 5 pm. And you see other employees just standing around or the manage can't be bothered to get off his ass. So if you need to go to safeway go to the one of the other two in town they just have more and always have multiple checkers.THEY SHOULD JUST SHUT THIS STORE DOWN !!!!!! read more

I worked in Safeways throughout the state as a merchandizer. This is only second to one other SW in the state for being small and dirty. I would find so much outdated food I needed a shopping cart. The pharmacy has made some frightening mistakes with my daughter and I, one that will be federally investigated. I would use a different pharmacy but I don't drive anymore and it's the only one I can walk to.Watch expiration dates and closely check any prescriptions to make sure they are not another persons with your name. read more

My friends and I have nicknamed this the "Heathen Safeway". There is an older lady who works as a cashier who is absolutely batshit crazy. On multiple occasions, friends of mine have been threatened by the cashier. It may have been slightly deserved a time or two, but other times not so much. When my friend walked in and saw birthday cake Oreos for the first time and said "holy s***!" The old lady at the register stopped scanning for the person she was helping, spun around, and yelled at us. My friend was very apologetic and said he didn't meant to be offensive, but she threatened to wash his mouth out with soap, telling him "this is a family establishment!" She threatened to kick the three of us out for using such words. Keep in mind this was at like 11pm and all the people in line were either high kids buying chips or people buying beer on their way to a party. Another time the same old lady was there and also threatened my other friend, saying she would wash her mouth out with soap and told her she better watch her mouth, because she quietly said "oh crap" after hitting the wrong button on the card reader at the register. Then my third experience with this old lady... This was before the other two times. This may help explain why it takes forever and a half to get through the register. I was there with a friend who was very sick and had asked me to drive him to the store to buy some NyQuil. He was all stuffed up, caughing, sneezing, and clearly sick. I was behind him in line buying some lucky charms and milk. She saw us talking in line, and insisted that she had to see both of our IDs to sell him the NyQuil. Keep in mind I was 20, he was 21. We both looked clearly over 18. My friends and I do not look at all like the "wrong crowd" we just look like average less-popular college kids. Another time some friends of mine went to this Safeway and witnessed this lady ring up a guy buying beer. She carded him, then waited for him to leave. As soon as he left she followed him out of the store, followed him to his car, and carded everybody in the car. Like yeah I get it that selling to people who will encourage underage drinking is illegal, but this is a little extreme. I have not seen her there for a while, although I have stopped shopping there. I would like to shop for groceries without being criticize for possibly accidentally letting "crap" slip out of my mouth in front of a bunch of high college kids, and without having to be carded because my obviously sick friend is buying NyQuil for himself. I am always afraid I will forget my ID, or somehow look suspicious or something. This lady doesn't just look for tr age, she takes like a good 30 seconds-1 minute reading over your ID, and checking to make sure your photo matches your face. Which is frustrating when there are like 7 people in line who are buying beer, and it takes her forever to read over your drivers license to make sure you are old enough to buy whatever you are buying. Be aware, if you swear you will be threatened to be kicked out, and you will be carded for just about everything. Now onto the inventory: one of the more expensive safe ways I have been to, and they have a very limited inventory. If you are hoping to find a more adequately stocked Safeway where you will not feel so judged by the employees, head to the one near philomath. It's way bigger with more variety, and the employees are nice. And they have self checkout, so you won't have to spend 20 minutes in line waiting for some insane old lady to read over everybody's IDs if somebody is buying cold medicine. read more

I'm all about hospitality. I can tell these employees are under a lot of stress. If they could relax a little they'd treat their customers much better. The deli girl was very cold and not too keen on customer satisfaction. There is one certain cashier there as well that made me feel a bit uneasy the way she treated me. I treat everyone kindly and with respect, so this took me back a little. Maybe it's just how she comes off under pressure. Terrible customer service. This is the closest store to my house and whenever I seem to get groceries there they only have 1 or 2 checkstands open. Not to mention very slow. Normally, I wouldn't review a grocery store (especially a chain like Safeway), but this location is special. EVERY time I go to this store (doesn't matter day or time), there are never enough cashiers. They always have long lines and the cashiers don't seem to be in any hurry. Absolutely the worst place to shop in all of Corvallis. Besides the awful customer service and the broken eggs I walked past, there are no checkers! I waited 13 minutes to check out on A Thursday night. They have four check out stands and one is open with 12 people in line? Meanwhile they have a sign that says "three is a crowd" indicating they'll open a new check out line when one line has more than 3. Of course, they didn't. read more

This is hands down the worst Safeway I have ever had the displeasure of shopping in. If it weren't for the location, my first trip in would surely have been my last. In my last 6 months of shopping at this establishment, I have never left the store with all products within the sell by or best by date. EVERY time, something has been out of date by over a month. Things from yogurts, to juices, and most recently today a FROZEN food item outdated by months! I hate this place. They're over-priced on everything (as if they think they're a convenience store) and the produce is terrible. They place stacks of products in front of the conveyor belt in the check-out so it's hard to unload your cart. And the checkers (who have been there for years) are awful. One fellow embarrassingly and insincerely (it's part of his shtick) flirts with every woman who goes through. Another one is almost always rude, it's just unbelievable. The only time I will step foot in this store is if we are late getting somewhere and going elsewhere would be too far out of our way. read more
