After my review of the pharmacy I said that there would be a review of the grocery store and here it is... We are a family of two. We used to be a family of five. No drama here; children married and moved on. Our grocery needs changed, and with retirement came an opportunity to shop carefully. We have shopped at all of the stores in the Chico area and Safeway now ranks among the lowest of the stores we have tried. And the reason for that is the fact that their corporate policy seems to be to target the unwary shopper. For instance; I needed a dozen eggs a while ago and ran into Safeway (it was closest) and picked up the dozen, checking for broken shells and then, just as I was about to close the lid, I saw the price...it was almost $5 a dozen. Earlier that morning I had been to Trader Joe's for some little thing and I had noted the price of eggs while I was there; $2.4 and some change. I dropped the eggs (figuratively and drove an extra mile to Trader Joe's. I assumed that Safeway was targeting the harried homemaker who has very little time to shop. They don't have the opportunity to price check around town. I saw the same kind of pricing in all of the basics. Milk, butter, bread and eggs. Almost always twice the price of TJ's. I could go on and on with stories of Safeway's policies and how they hurt the customer, but why bother; Safeway doesn't care what I think...or what you think. TJ's is a division of Aldi and Aldi is moving slowly, but surely, westward with their version of a supermarket. Safeway is bound to lose a lot of business when Aldi, with their version of customer service and pricing, moves into town. I can hardly wait! read more

I like shopping at this location because the staff is always friendly and helpful and the clearance prices on meats is a great bargain! Aisles are clean and most of the time the checkout lines are reasonable! read more

It is so sad to see what this once beautiful and cared for Safeway on East has become. Dark, over crowded isles with stock, items not faced, and a dairy section that looks unhealthy. The lights to the dairy case are usually dark and today an entire rack was pushed back too far to get creamer. There is usually spilled drying milk in the door frames and on the products and it is gross. The new hires have no sense of customer service and are usually talking to the bagger. Like today as the young woman was painfully distracted and talking to the bagger they were both talking about a customer who had spilled some water. Not once did either interact with the customer. Both were so slow I decided I cannot support this store anymore. The morale is low and it shows. There is no pride in that store and you feel it. read more

Excellent customer service! Every employee greets you and is willing to help you find the products you're looking for. Great selection in the meat department, I always go here to get steaks or Tri tips for a bbq. Great selection of produce as well! I'm a huge fan of sushi and they make it fresh every day! My experience brought me here at 9AM for when the pharmacy opens. I had a script sent in the previous night from an Emergency Care facility. My little month old burned his hand on some pizza sauce. Pharmacies were all closed so we had to wait for the AM. I was standing around waiting for the pharmacy gates to open, they were a few minutes later than 9 according to my phone. When you have a sad, crying little baby that just needs some burn cream every minute seems to drag on. Once they opened I was helped and they didn't have the script ready. I didn't expect that since they just opened and it was delivered overnight. They had to enter all my information into the system for insurance then they said they would have it ready shortly. I reminded them it was for my little baby and he really needed this soon. They were very nice and courteous. On a side note, I'm not sure what takes so long to prepare a script that is already prepackaged and sealed (it was a tub of ointment, nothing to measure out). But, alas, my poor little mind was racing as to what my little guy was doing in the car waiting for his cream. Turns out when you stand around waiting anxiously for something time goes a lot slower. I got the script, fair price, and got back to the my little baby 11 minutes after 9AM. Not long at all, it just seemed like it to me. They offered to help show me how to apply the cream, but I said I know how. He offered to let me come back later today when I wasn't in a rush and the pharmacist could assist if I had any further questions. Good service. I'm pleased with this experience. read more

One of the very best all around grocery stores in California! Everyone who accompanied me shopping has loved this store. Most impressed were people from out of state who stared in awe at a wide variety of fresh produce, followed by aisle after aisle assortment of salad dressings w/wide selections to choose from. (We are a bit spoiled in CA). I enjoy the leisurely pace, clean floors, shelves always stocked and friendly helpful customer service! Full service store even has discount gas station on lot, now that's convenience. read more

It's a Safeway, and everyone has opinions already about a large chain, but what makes this one special is how friendly the staff are! Even on bad days they are very helpful. Also, this Safeway makes the best sandwiches. Sorry mangrove Safeway! They need to step up their sandwich game. The lady checker at self-checkout was very rude to me and gave me attitude when I was trying to purchase discount meat. I had scanned it the wrong way, and instead of explaining to me the process of needing to have assistance when it comes to discounted meat nicely, she rudely said, "you did it wrong." how was I to know? With employees with attitudes like that, why would I want to go back. She didn't even smile or say hello to me when I walked up. Remember common courtesy people! I have been shopping here for a year, since moving to this end of town, and frequent the store on a regular basis. Lately it has been extremely busy and yet the store does not increase their number of checkers, even though the sign at the registers says that they will do just such a thing, should the line become too long. Tonight I went in to get some water, and there was not only a line at each of the 2 open registers, but also a line to get into those lines! I would expect this at another grocery store like winco or food max, where kids stick their sweaty hands in the bulk food, but I have been choosing to pay the higher prices of Safeway for the exact purpose of a speedier and cleanlier shopping experience. But after standing in line for 5 minutes, and watching people cut in line in front of me, I've decided I will no longer be shopping at this store. Also the monopoly is a scam. read more

Let me just start off with this: I've NEVER been upset enough to write a negative review ANYWHERE. I was recently employed at this Safeway and shopped there as well. I went in for my shift yesterday in uniform and ready to get to work. I noticed that there was another one of my co-workers names on the daily schedule during the same shift I just walked in to do. I was then called into the office, and terminated. No reason was given as to my termination. I was told to give my apron and name tag up, and that I was fired and to return home. This was the first time I've been fired from anywhere I've been employed at. Coming from not only a customer's perspective but also a former employee's perspective I was totally blind-sided by the complete lack of respect they've showed me. They even planned it out to where I had made friends with my now replacement, and right before my probation was up. They worked the schedule to where they wouldn't have to give me my paycheck for next weeks work and after I was terminated right there I wouldn't have to come back in for any reason. What bothers me the most isn't that I was fired it's that it came out of the blue. I had never been disciplined for anything, and the one time I called during my employment there it was due to a fever. They planned it perfectly. I wonder how many times I passed my managers in the halls and greeted them before they all stabbed me in the back. Safeway as a company has lost the business of me and everyone in my extended family due to the knifing and completely rude way they went about this. I am never returning after how I was treated. The employees call it "Slaveway" for a reason. They're terrible to their workers. I've lost all respect for the company. read more

I used to go always go to this safeway, they sometimes have good deals with the rewards program. The last time i came here i was with my boyfriend and our 3 yr old son, I was being followed around by one of there workers, litterally everywhere we went she was not far behind, when we went down an aisle, she was at the checkout at the end of the aisle, (the checkout was closed by the way) when we finally checked out and left, we were standing right outside the doors and i was telling my boyfriend of my suspicion, she was staring at us through the window,... i Have never had a more uncomfortable shopping expieriance, and i will never go back! This is for the pharmacy only! Rudest people I have ever had to interact with! Don't help with anything. Was ignored by Kayla for 10 min! Then another lady comes up to take my rx and says the don't have my insurance, give her my card. She said it won't take cus I have something else, refusing to help me and Whig rude that the pharmacist had to go to lunch. Seriously shut it all down all there if you go to lunch at the same time. Worst thing was I got a different rx a month ago and was told it went threw the insurance, bs lie she never ran it just gave me the cash price! Don't use them! read more

Action Urgent Care and Safeway pharmacy was the worst experience I have ever had. Had an appointment and still had to wait 1.5 hour to speak virtually with a doctor. Then prescription was supposed to be ready in 30 minutes and 2.5 hours later still not done. We had to wait another 30 minutes because they had not even started it. The pharmacy staff was not nice at all. We will not go back there! read more

We don't shop here much even though it's the closest grocer to where we live ... prices are higher on comparable items at Raley's or Save Mart, but it's handy in a pinch ... we always buy gas there though as it's usually in line with other value-priced stations like AM-PM ... but, I have a comment about a recent visit - I had purchased five Bear Creek Gumbo mix packages - they're easy to do and has a taste comparable to my grandmother's (though no one cooks as good as your grandmother) and, as they're relatively hard to find, I bought all they had ... when I got home, however, I noticed a "puff" of the powder coming out of the tops of four of them and took them back two days later ... the clerk refunded mu money (albeit at the $1 less sale price - they had gone on sale) and I saw him take them to the "back" area ... I found them back on the shelf a few days later ... that's not a good practice ... read more

Their 2 layer, 8 inch carrot cake is the best I have ever had, anywhere. The cream cheese frosting is incredible, absolute perfection, and the cake has the perfect combination of spices, carrots, and plump raisins. They used to use walnut pieces along the border but switched to toasted coconut which is not my favorite, but probably to cut costs because walnuts are much more expensive than coconut flakes. Reasonably priced too at $12.99. read more

Review for Pharmacy... Do not move your prescriptions here folks. They were out of my wife's medicine for 2 days so I had to go over to retrieve the medicine. When I arrived it was a little unclear which side is pickup and drop off so I ended up in the drop off line. I waited as a blonde lady with long hair tap tap tapped something into her computer. Eventually she looked up so I explained I am here to pickup for my wife. Looking back down at her PC she explained I was on the wrong side if I waited over in the other line she'd be with me in a moment. After waiting a good amount of time I finally gave up and now I am moving my prescriptions back to Rite Aid. I have never had the pleasure of being completely ignored while being the only person in line before this experience. I understand there was probably some emergency she was dealing with but this is more about the rudeness. read more

The Safeway on Mangrove is MUCH better. Their meat counter is awesome and provides many products not available at the East ave. location. Also, the wine row is much better at Mangrove. They actually have someone there to help you. His name is Dave and he always lets me in on good deals. The East ave. location waits way too long before they call up an additional cashier. To be fair, in general, ALL Safeway stores have too many employees that are overly anxious to get back to stocking. They leave and it backs up a minute later. But the biggest problem at this location is expired products. On the same day, when I got home. I noticed that the yogurt and pretzels were both expired for over a week. Also, their meat is rarely fresh and the hamburger selection is always depleted for some reason. I go to this store twice a week and this week, they have been completely out of 80/20 hamburger. My final problem with this location is the inaccuracies at the check out stand. At least twice a month, I am charged the wrong price and have to deal with the customer service booth. It usually takes at least 5 minutes before you get help. It's pretty ridiculous. Sometimes they give you a $5 gift card for your trouble but they are very inconsistent with this. 8 out of 10 times they give no card and you get nothing for your inconvenience. If you can, go to the Mangrove location. I used to live closer! P.S. the deli at the East ave. location is not nearly as good as Mangrove. For some reason, the only chickens available in the afternoon were cooked at 7:30 a.m. And the slices sit there all day in pieces. The Mangrove location slices each order FRESH. If you go for lunchmeat in the evening, chances are it was sliced 12 hours ago and is dry. read more
