This was once a great store. The management simply doesn't care. The produce and dairy goes bad all the time. I heard a checkout clerk say once, "I don't know why they keep all the good produce in the back". I can't tell you how many times I've purchased food that went bad the next day. The health department should make a trip there. The shelves are perpetually out of stock. They keep moving things around so you can't find them. The app has gotten worse not better. Wish I had something nice to say. We need some competition. read more

"Yes, we have no bathrooms" The Chester/Kent Island Safeway Gas Station across basically a road and the whole parking lot has no public restrooms. It is such a surprise to the public that a gas station on Route 50 to the Delaware and Maryland beaches has no restrooms on site that Safeway has put up not one, but two signs informing the public that Safeway can't meet basic traveler's expectations. There are restroom's inside the main store across the ChikFilet and shopping center traffic and Safeway's parking lot. You have to wonder the difference in fuel sales from a Saturday to a Sunday, when ChikFilet's closeby bathrooms are closed. What an opportunity to make more business sales! read more

Bought lunch meat from deli and it was bad 1 day later, bought Cole slaw and was stinky and spoiled as soon as I opened it.

They make you feel guilty for asking for assistance, like you're bothering them. Then the chick at the checkout counter didn't even say Hi, screw you, or anything. Why are they working there? Terrible customer service and pricing maintenance. Multiple items showing on sale but sale ended 3/28. Waited at customer service desk for 10 minutes, asked a cashier that was busy talking to a co-worker. Couldn't help other than to say that the person at the service desk was busy doing something else and would be back. Prices ridiculously high even in these times. From looking at the other reviews, it seems this store is neglectful when it comes to its chronic customer service problems. I will not be going back there. The variety and quality of foods is very good. The prices need help, as is the case with every overpriced Acme (parent company) in Maryland. I purchased two small bags of groceries for $85 the other day. Last three visits: 1) Clerk at one of two open check-out lanes was eating while checking out customers. I had to hurriedly grab and bag my own items as she was quickly tossing/throwing them to the end of the counter. RUDE. 2) Self check-out because only one cashier lane was open; problems at self check-out and no one there available to help. I wait. And wait. WHERE ARE YOUR EMPLOYEES? A somewhat frazzled woman eventually gets to me and tells ME to "calm down" (???). RUDE. 3) Self check-out again because only one cashier lane is open again. One item doesn't scan. Machine tells me help is on its way. I wait. I wait. I wait. WHERE ARE YOUR EMPLOYEES? I finally put the item to the side and attempt to finish and pay, but the system won't let me. Finally, an employee shows up. Doesn't say a word to me. I tell her I don't want the item any longer; I want to check out and GO. She completely ignores me, picks up the item, scans it (I'm then charged for something I just told her I no longer want), doesn't say a word to me, and walks away. RUDE. Target is right down the road with much better pricing and customer service, although not the variety. I can drive further for a variety of decent products and I will. I will never again go into this over-priced store that obviously does not value its customers and spends no time training their employees to act appropriately. Pretty embarrassing that this is one of the first grocery stores visitors from the bridge have the opportunity to visit on their way to vacation. read more

I shop here often, because I am an employee of a near by organization for whom I purchase groceries for the group homes weekly. Needless to say, I spend an abundance of money in this store. Sadly, what I do notice is the employees go out of their way to follow me around the store, watching me as if I'm going to steal. When I use the self checkout, that suddenly find things to do around the register, or just straight in the open come over and stand there and watch. This makes me very uncomfortable, because I don't notice them watching other shoppers at the self checkout. The location is convenient, but I will have to take my business elsewhere. I do understand the functions of lost prevention, but to make a regular and honest customer feel degraded and distrusted is UNACCEPTABLE. read more

I think this is a nice Safeway and it's very clean and the people are very friendly and helpful. They carry things I never expected to see on the Eastern shore. The vegetable department is very well stacked, and the butcher shop is better than any Safeway I've ever seen. I highly recommend this store. read more

Frequent flyer here. I visit Starbucks inside of Chester MD Safeway daily. Sometimes twice in a day. This location is my go to. Everyone is always friendly. Drinks are always good. I have only one complaint. Recently every time I get a pastry, it's stale. Not edible at all. Very disappointing. It's money wasted. Today I learned they have started serving items from the display case verse behind the counter in packaging. This needs to be changed. Immediately in my opinion. You're paying for stale product and that's not ok. Please change this. read more

I've been coming to this grocery store for years. Clean, well stocked, and friendly employees. Today I needed ground beef and normally the folks that work back there are always helpful and down right a pleasure to deal with. However, today as I approached the counter an employee was finishing up with a customer buying meat. As he finished with him he takes out the tape they use to weight your items, looked right at me, and then walked away. A few moments later another gentlemen, a young african american employee walks out and heads towards the seafood area he looks over and says "is he is helping you, ma'am?" I stated "[N]o he didn't even acknowledge that I was here" not happy with today's visit and I must say this is not the norm. However, if he doesn't like waiting on certain folks he needs to go elsewhere because next time I'm going straight to a manger! read more

I have been shopping this store for a very long time . When my daughters visit they remind me that this store is the most expensive Safeway anywhere . What I have noted is they will raise prices in the summer because all the boaters come and load up every weekend . All too often they sell "out of date ". Items And many items that last 2 or 3 days. They seem to get accolades from high level management because of their practices at this store I bought a sandwich at this store snd noticed the meat was green when I got it opened . I called home office and was promised a call back ; I never got it . Food lion has grown much larger as a result . read more

This place looked very new or at least only a couple of months old. It is nice to know we can travel across the united states and find a place that I know very well. Well the first trip I made here was on the way to Delaware and required a gas station as well as some water and snacks, since I was not sure how long it would take to get to my final stop. Everything about this place reminder me of home good and bad, but know the people were friendly and happy to see you, they were helpful. If you are looking for place to stop for things to get you through the day, this is the place. I am sure people shopping here are happy to have a place so clean and people friendly. read more

Here visiting relatives over 4th of July holiday and I was very impressed. I used to live on Kent Island and it was a big deal when the first Safeway location was put in. This new building is nice. What I was particularly impressed by was the selection of foods and organic choices. I also thought that the fruit and vegetables were fresh. My wife likes that there is a Starbucks inside also. The only thing I wasnt able to notice were the prices. I didnt hear my wife scoff at anything, so I think they were in line with everyone else. Overall, for a holiday weekend, they were well staffed and friendly. I would go there again if I need to make a run for anything. read more

My wife stopped by safeway bakery to pick up cake for her mom today, and wow... what a horrible customer service. Lady working the counter tried to be helpful, and was about to give happy birthday sticker, when her supervisor (Or team lead?) snapped at her "Don't give out the sticker, it is not free!!!". My wife was startled, then offered to purchase the sticker, feeling a bit pissed off. Then, the supervisor made the matter worse by saying "Just give it to her, only this time". And she did not even look at my wife. That is just terrible service. Reading comments below seems to indicate this is not an isolated incident. Never shopping here again! Ever. I will go out of my way for another store! I did a drive up and go order. One, mostly for the convenience but two, this COVID stuff going on I'm trying to limit being around a lot of people. My order time was 5pm, I called at 4:47 because I was right across the street. The guy said they just started my Order it will be ready in about 15 minutes. Okay, I'll wait... 5:05 he comes out says it will be 30 minutes. Okay, I'll now go home and come back. 5:45 before even leaving my house and call. The "manager" said it will be a while if they even get it done tonight.... what... wait what. I informed her my name and information and asked her to double check. She said "yelp it will be a while".. I asked her how this is possible. She started getting nasty and says "if you don't like it you can come shop for your own groceries...." well one, she doesn't know my story or my reason why. Two, this service is Offered for a reason! She was ignorant and raising her voice. I asked to speak to a manager she claims she was one. Frustrated and pissed off I said well you are a horrible manager. She said "thank you very F'N much".... and hung up the phone on me. Obviously not checking my order, I got a text FOUR, yes FOUR minutes later my order was ready! I didn't even go pick it up. I got a call the next day and they said they'd process a refund. Never received a text for refund update. I call into corporate and they really didn't seem to care about this behavior! TRISH IS AN INCONSIDERATE "MANAGER" if even one! I will not go back to Safeway, ever. And let everyone know of this horrible behavior. read more

seems this may win an award for the absolute worst grocer ever. I went to buy an onion today and it literally was swarming with fruit flies. I truly have never ever seen more of a disgrace -meat has often been past due date-same with fruit. Food Lion is your best bet around here-I went there right after the onion fiasco. They don't even care- I know 3 neighbors of mine has literally brought past due fruit to manager and nothing had been done. Seems we may want to get a Fresh Market or Grauls here soon. read more

Nice, clean store, as are most all Safeways, albeit a bit pricey...My only complaint is this store says Open 24 Hrs., but last night I was there at 12:15 a.m. and doors were locked... or wouldn't open automatically.... maybe they were having some sort of problem... will try again tonight. It's really convenient for me because I get off work nearby at midnight. Last time I was in there, a young lady who worked there walked all the way across the store with me to show me where the honey was... Very helpful! read more

This place is the worst. Aside from having to monitor the sales that don't come thru at checkout, the deli is terrible. There can be 4-5 people working, but only one will actually serve customers. There is an older women who never serves me and gives me the evil eye, clearly hating her job and me for some reason. Looks miserable always and seems hateful. First the staff here overall are friendly and helpful. But the fact is that this is the largest grocery store in town and they reap the rewards. The selection is pretty basic and overpriced. No fresh salads or anything on the deli to write home about. Here at kent island safeway you get what you get and don't throw fit. I suppose many folks think it's great you get Safeway gas points but considering the amount of money you are overcharged regularly here it's the least they can do. My biggest issue of late was buying balloons for a party that deflated quickly. I didn't want my money back I simply wanted a replacement of the balloons but they refused. I was scratching my head thinking I'm a loyal customer and you only have to replace my balloons but obviously that was a ballon too far read more

This is my favorite grocery store. Giant store, SUPER clean, and a huge selection. Produce is always very fresh and there's so much variety. Lots of "natural" and whole foods too, with brands you can't often find in other places. The ready made foods (pizzas, subs, soup, fresh salads, etc) are always fresh and delicious. There's also a Starbucks with a full Starbucks menu. read more

I shop at Safeway, definitely because of the convenience. With only 2 grocery store options this is the better option in my opinion but the more expensive option as well. However I like to do the Drive up & Go feature from time to time and it has never been a great experience. My most recent experience yesterday was the worst of them all. As the rules go you drive up, call them number and they bring out the groceries. I drive up and both spots are taken so I park 2 spots over from the designated spots and proceed to call. The woman who answered the phone was very hard to understand, she abruptly answers and says "name on the order?" After giving her my name she hung up. I was unable to tell her I was not in the designated parking area. So I called back. I said "were you the lady I was just speaking with", she said "yes". I said you hung up so quick I couldn't tell you that the spots are full and I had to park somewhere else. She rudely replies with "yeah they are here to pick up their orders just wait for the spot." I then informed her of my location and car make and model to help her. She was very unpleasant to deal with. Also note this is not the first time the spots have been taken and sometimes there are taken with people who are in the store shopping because they are right up front. This is by no means Safeway's fault, but maybe they should consider a location where they can add additional spots, that might be less likely to be taken by patrons of the store. There is a $5 service fee, I assume to do the shopping for me. I am fine paying the fee, I just certainly wish the staff would be more polite. If you don't like your job find a new one! With the Drive up & Go feature when placing the order you have the option of allowing them to make substitutions for you, or to not purchase that item. I do not recommend allowing them to make substitutions for you. I tend to use this feature when I need basic items, not a full shop with meats, seafood or produce. Aside from that the deli is the worst, the rest of the departments (bakery, seafood, floral) are all pretty helpful. The lines on the weekend are terrible and they should look into restructuring the schedule to have more cashiers on during peak times. read more

The worst service at a Starbucks I have ever seen. Line was 20+ deep and wait after ordering was 20 mins. The barrista had no sense of urgency and walked out from behind the counter several times to find customers who were no longer present to retrieve their orders. read more

this safeway is very conveniently located along main st, just off the main highway, route 50. the safeway is actually pretty big, but then again, not many people were here on a friday evening when we came so perhaps it appeared big. standard offerings like meat, baked goods, deli, and produce. some of their items were not organized very well, for example, in one refrigerated section, we found a small selection of yogurt, and immediately though, oh, what a small selection of yogurt! later, when we walked down the cheese aisle, we found more yogurt, and pretty large selection of it too. checkout was a breeze, again, since there hardly any customers at this time. parking lot for this shopping center is huge, and was quite empty when we arrived. read more

Every Safeway I've ever been to has the WORST produce. At this location, nothing is ever stocked...they are constantly out of the most basic items. Aside from that, the produce goes bad very quick, within a day or two. Watch expiration dates also! A lot of the items they sell are already expired or expire the next day. We frequent this Safeway and have a great experience every time. Tonight however, was EXCELLENT. My daughter and I were making the dreaded "I don't know what I'm making for dinner trip" this evening. She always sits in the back of the cart patiently as we make our way around the store. Tonight, she occupied herself by jamming her necklace in one of those little holes by the cup holder. It was STUCK and to a 5 year old, this was the end of the world. One of the team members named Kelly helped us get it out by literally using the pin on her name tag to hook the tiny chain down in this hole. This could have easily turned into a week long crisis of losing her favorite necklace. Instead, my daughter is going on and on about the nice lady named Kelly at Safeway! Watch this gas station. The pump price was higher than the sign price for all grades. I noticed after I pumped almost 20 gallons into my car and that has holds only 18 gallons bone dry empty, which it was not. Counter clerk said she has no control over such things, rude.
