They had exactly what I came in for, their fruits and vegetables were fresh looking and not outrageously priced. The staff was friendly and helpful. The store seemed to be clean, and as I said, well stocked. There is something off about this place. The people who give it 5 stars must not use it very often. It has rude customer service, high prices, and items are always out of stock. Produce like bananas and avocados are either way too green or totally rotting. This store is the worst, and I have several theories why. First, it's the only large grocery store in town which means there is no competition and prices are sky high as a result. These big businesses abide by capitalistic practices, and left unchecked, Safeway will rip you off, as we see here in Bisbee. My next theory is that this building is built on the sight of something ancient, and thus cursed. I am not sure what happened, but the vibration is off. The employees can be weird at times. One time I was looking at produce and a worker said to me, "hey man, you look tired." I was just thinking to myself, "yeah, I actually am kind of tired. Thanks for making me fell awkward about it." A simple, "can I help you find something" might have been more appropriate, but they never want to help. I stopped asking a long time ago because I get tire of dealing with poor attitudes. Avoid this place like the plague. It should be boycotted by the community and visitors alike. There are several local grocery stores in Old Bisbee such as Poco, High Desert, and Mimosa Market. They are a much more pleasant experience than this overpriced corporate mess. read more

This is solely for the pharmacy staff. Considering that they serve virtually all of Bisbee Hereford Naco Warren and surrounding environs they are absolutely incredible and one of the best pharmacies I've ever used... and I've used a lot! The completely unacceptable and perfectly avoidable atrocity, And I do mean atrocity, is Safeway corporation who does not hire, Nor probably pay well, enough staff. Thousands of people LIVES rely on this one pharmacy and it is the size of a small bedroom. Employees are climbing over each other and doing the best they can so if you have a complaint call corporate Safeway, although frankly they couldn't give a flying F about people In pain and suffering or for their medication's. Safeway is totally irresponsible one of the biggest corporations in the US and too greedy to take care of the people they serve. Customers need to remember that Safeway does not exist without them. Safeway needs to be reminded of this. Word to the wise always double check whatever scripts Safeway fills because people with that kind of responsibility should be paid well and not be under stress. I've caught several medication mistakes over the years and there is absolutely no excuse for that, people can die. read more

This Safeway is a much better option for produce, meat, and dairy than the Walmart in Douglas. But they are the only major chain option in the immediate area for groceries, so everything is more expensive. The store is usually neatly stocked. There is a great alcoholic beverage selection. The only thing this outdated poorly maintained and cluttered store has going for itself are the employees who are mostly nice, helpful and friendly. The organic produce offering is pathetic and vegetables are often old and rotten. Bought a bag carrots, they were so bad, not even a rabbit would eat them. The public bathroom is a horror show. Bisbee is such an awesome town to visit and there are several little specialty grocers right within town that are small, pricey and don't have much of a selection.. But Safeway is just a short drive out of town and has everything you need! I am not impressed by this Safeway. For the only fresh food option in town, this place is pathetically understocked. For example, I was looking for a certain common brand of cornmeal, they did not have it, only the Safeway Select brand that I will not buy because of its poor quality, and I prefer cornmeal in a box, not a bag as it stays fresher that way. There were 3 managers in the store that day, not your typical management, but guys with starched shirts and ties that only come to the store to see how the store can make more money. I asked one of them where the rice was, since the aisles are poorly marked and the store is disorganized (most disorganized Safeway I've ever experienced), he said rudely "I'm helping someone else now". How long does it take to say "aisle 11", unless he doesn't know the layout of his own store? So I eventually found it myself, not with the pasta but across the aisle near the frozen foods where the dried beans were. I guess they think that rice goes with beans, but in reality, rice is a starch that should go with pasta. I'm not sure where they put the potato products because I never buy them, but you'd think it would go with the pasta and rice. I'm sure its probably hidden in some weird area of the store where you wouldn't expect to find it. I've found that the packaged meat is packed with an inordinate amount of air inside of the plastic, like the meat is outgassing. Other times it is leaking blood, which is really gross. I've bought lunch meat there that is slimy, and I've heard others say that they've bought products that are long past their prime. If this is the only food store in town, why is such a large amount of the floor space taken up by the floral department and seasonal home decorations? I would say a good half of the store is not displaying food, but other products like paper goods and laundry detergent which one does not need to buy as often as food. I like to buy food fresh, like every few days. I don't stock up on items that have a long shelf life and then go a couple of weeks without shopping. We have other options, like a couple of doors down for non food items. We or I don't need to see 26 different laundry detergent options when you can buy things like that in Sierra Vista whenever you make the trek out to Walmart. And another thing, why are they making up all these past prime meat dishes like chicken cordon bleu that nobody buys and they end up selling for half price? I would never buy vegetables packed with raw meat. Why do they sell mushy gushy stuffed peppers in the meat section? Who buys those? And the deli people seem like they've worked there for generations, they have some kind of attitude like we're interrupting their conversations. For a back-country store that's almost the last link in the logistics chain, this Safeway does fine. With a substantial cross-border clientele that also includes foodies and vegans from Old Bisbee, and Betty Crocker folks from everywhere else in the area, no one will ever be completely satisfied. Hey, who woulda thought you could buy a chub of decent goat cheese in North Naco? A smaller vegetable section, but not much demand for shitaki or purple-striped cauliflower in Bisbee. The meat section is pretty well-stocked; not easy to keep a wide selection on hand all the time. I confess--I regularly shop the last-day meat mark-downs, makes it easy to decide what's for dinner tomorrow. And a decent selection of house-brand old-world you-slice-it breads and bakery fat-bombs. Jewish rye, no seeds! (at least once in a while) To the previous reviewer who trashed the store--it's Bisbee, not La Jolla. In a tough, low-margin business, Safeway has stuck with us.
