I stopped in to make an in store purchase and place and order for an amp that was located at an out of state Guitar Center. When I got there there the place was pretty much empty. There was a customer playing guitar and one fooling around with the basses. There was a customer at the counter having a conversation with what seemed to be the only employee in sight. The employee glanced my way when I entered but didn't acknowledge me and continued his conversation. I walked over to what I had come for only to not find it so I went back over to the counter and stood there while the employee and customer laughed and joked, got another glance but still no acknowledgement. I walked away again to search for what I wanted. After about 10 min, a couple came in holding a receipt so I walked back over to the counter and the couple walked up to another part of the counter. They chatty customer saw that others were in the store and walked over to the guitar wall. Sadly as expected, the employee asked the new folks if he could help them again not acknowledging me. While he was getting whatever they had ordered or their repair another customer walked in and was assisted. Now I've been in the store for about 35 min. and still no acknowledgement. A 3rd customer came in, a father and son, looking at the bass amps. The employee finished with he 2nd customer and started heading for the father and son duo. I'm not that person that loves to get loud and make a scene so I waited until the employee was walking past be and headed him off. I was gonna give this guy one more shot. The first chance was when I asked if there was another Guitar Center close by and then asked what time his store opened in the morning. With both questions, the employee had the opportunity to ask A) If he could help me and B) What I was looking for. He didn't he answered my questions continued to ask the duo. I'm glad I listened to my intuition because when I looked up, I saw a sign.. literally. In red and white letters it read "NY Music Garage" and below it a window decal which exclaimed "A Different Kind of Music Store." As soon as I walked in it was clear that those words were true. I was immediately greeted with a warm welcome. I had initially planned to just scope out their collection and perhaps jam, while getting to know the store, but with so many affordable goodies around, I just had to shop. The awesome fellas there helped me pick up a perfectly fitting guitar slide, a strap lock and even a homemade guitar-shaped cutting board!! It's made of walnut, shaped like a Les Paul and sealed in food-grade sealant... how cool is that?! They even had two other variations, a tele and and a strat. After all that shopping, I was ready to try some guitars. They kindly guided me to a private practice room, which had plenty of space to move around, several fun amps and phenomenal acoustics. Looking around the store, it was clear they carried an awesome collection of new, used and vintage axes... all at fair & reasonable prices too! Scott is a total character, his family are all musicians and his father played alongside Duke Ellington (and there are pictures around the store which show it). I took the LIRR from manhattan to this unknown hamlet out in Long Island, grabbed a cab and 5 minutes later was in front of a sketchy seeming music store. Scott let me in and showed me around his incredible instrument warehouse. He had all the options for me set up, tuned and ready for me to play with, and taught me all about the features of the various cellos. They have an on staff luthier to hand-carve their bridges and sounding posts, and I was really impressed with the level of care they cleary took of their instruments. Add to that, they have a 3 year get half your money back deal, which is great for children and adults who may get bored. After buying a wonderful cello for maybe 1/3 of what I would have paid in the city, he drove me to the train station. Such a surreal yet amazing experience.
