While I think that the intentions of this organization are great, my experience trying to adopt a dog from them was miserable. I have some mobility issues but had found a puppy to adopt. Just before she was ready to come home with me, I had some unplanned medical tests and it was going to be 2-3 days before I got the results. I wanted to be transparent and shared the information with the foster, asking that they give me those days to be sure that I could take care of the puppy for life. This was on a Friday evening. The foster told me that they don't hold animals (although their website states that if you want to adopt and need weeks, they would not hold the animal), but said she would check with Safe Hands on Saturday morning. She then texted me on Saturday morning saying that she had lined up another family to meet the pup on Sunday, said she was running low on food and since I had planned to donate the food I had purchased (which cost over $100) to Safe Hands if ultimately, I couldn't adopt the pup, she asked me to bring the food to her home. I couldn't believe that they wouldn't wait 2-3 days for what they characterized as a "highly adoptable dog." No explanation was provided. I took the food to the foster's home, along with a crate, crate mat, bed, toys, collars, leashes and training treats to the foster's home and put them on the doorstep. I was completely distraught! I later sent an email to the organization and the director responded with absolutely zero compassion, and I found out from her that the new family was to meet the pup on Saturday--not Sunday. After about 6 weeks, I decided that I wanted to try again. My application wasn't passed along in a timely fashion and the fosters either didn't respond at all or they responded over 10 days after my application had supposedly been sent to the fosters, letting me know that the pups had been adopted. Zero compassion, zero flexibility, extremely poor communication.
Ultimately, I adopted a puppy from another rescue organization and the experience was wonderful. read more
