We originally moved our business to them because the credit union we were with started acting like most regular banks - attitudes from the staff and acting like our business was not needed... There's no option for a negative number. Worst customer service in Bakersfield and Delano. Everyone on service there should be fired. They cashed fraudulent checks, multiple times, to a delinquent who was later arrested, and my purse was found in her possession! (how do I know?) I received a call from a Detective. This bank put my account as -$500. plus. They also flagged my name at other banks! They made me feel horrible because they didn't believe me. While those checks were being cashed, I was at work. This place has the worst customer service. I called today and spoke with Stacy who would not give me her employee ID number nor her last name. I asked her how I dispute a charge on my card when I am not able to contact the business and I am not getting the services I paid for. She told me I need to email the company and try to resolve the dispute with them. I again asked her, how do I do that when I cannot even email the company and she began to argue with me.. I've been with CVCU (now Safe1) since I was a kid, my grandfather helped me open up my first account. Since Safe1 took over I'm not unhappy with them but I'm not thrilled either. The staff is friendly, some of them even know me by now due to my biweekly visits and address me by name which is nice. I have no issue with the staff or the courtesy of the staff (minus one but we'll get into that shortly.) I have a little issue with the bank itself and it's making me consider a switch. The lack of weekend hours really kills me. I have a job where I work until 5pm and there isn't a location super close by so it's really tough for me to make it to the bank before they close. Several hours banks in town (Citi and Chase for example) have Saturday hours which would be much more convenient. The other issue I have is the home loan woman. I was looking to buy a house and wanted to look at going through my bank just for convenience. My credit score was 1 point off from getting the best rate....1 point. She tells me there is nothing she can do I either except the next best rate or continue looking elsewhere. I called another loan place and got the same response, 1 point off. However, that rep asked me if he could run my accounts and look at some ways to help my score. He came back a few hours later and showed me what cards I needed to pay what on to get the score down, it cost me a few hundred bucks is all, just putting that money on a few credit cards and bam, he does a rapid rescore and my score goes up 4 points I get the best rate. Safe1 lost me as a customer for a home loan due to her not willing to offer any advice or help met at all and I feel like they should be more willing to help out especially on such large purchases, a loan that size is great for them as well. read more

Ive been with safe 1 since i was in HS and not once have i had a bad experience with any location. i personally want to thank jose mejia. Every time ive had an issue with my acccount and/or had any questions regarding any type of loans he always goes above and beyond to help us out. If he doesnt know the answer to any questions we have, he will always ask around to make sure he gives us the correct answer. Hes always my to go person since then. i would def recommend safe 1 to anyone and also recommend them to go to him for anything they need. Safe 1 credit union has been my go to financial institution for 20 years. They tellers are very welcoming and helpful and have always accommodated me with any banking that I needed. The reason for the bad review is every time I make a transaction from Venmo it gets blocked and I have to text a Yes that it was my charge. Many times where it sent me a yes/no and I approved it but they blocked me out and I had to contact the bank. Even once where I could not use my card until Monday when the bank opened back up. I had no access to my money what so ever. Also very recently I tried to dispute a charge of fraud of $59.95 that was charged on my account when it should have been a charge for $1.05 from USPS. I was told they would deny my claim because I didn't have a receipt from USPS. Even though I gave them my email response I received but due to the fact the amount charged was not stated on the email. They are denying my claim. I will definitely be closing my account with Safe 1. Luckily this amount was only $59.95 and not more. I was told when setting up my account I will have fraud protection which is clearly a lie. They get to pick and choose what they want to cover. So sad they want to lose business over $59. read more

We had been with chevron valley from way back when it was shell credit union. We never had any problems with Chevron valley either. Things started off great with Safe1. I was grateful that we got to keep the same account and routing numbers. Made the transisition very smooth. Now I am not very happy with safe1 and am looking to change banks. We have always had overdraft protection and the first time we really needed to use it they canceled it on us. Now I have to re-apply? What is there to apply for they still charge me $30 per transaction anyway? Also I have made some on-going monthly subscriptions and even though I have told them that this is NOT FRAUD 5 times, each time they still block the transaction. The final straw has been they will not allow to pay our bills with Venmo anymore. We are limited to 2 transactions a month not more than $250. This is ridiculous. The staff is always courteous and friendly except the blonde lady who works the front desk on the right as u walk in. Everytime I have had to talk to her she acts like I'm interfering with her day.! I hate switching banks but I think the time has come. read more

Safe 1 Credit Union has been our bank for 30+ years. We now actually live in Idaho and we still use them because they are amazing. The customer service is outstanding. If we have a problem they take care of us immediately. Every time in those 30 years they have gone above and beyond to take care of our business. This credit union is the only bank in the neighborhood where I'm living for the next few years while working on a work-related engineering project in a nearby but tiny community. I went in today to open a simple checking account. I was dressed humbly and casually--jeans and shirt, all clean, holding a briefcase with documents and cash to open the account. The sole woman behind the "new accounts" desk performed the best "May I help you, Sir?" sneer I've heard since dealing with the Bellevue, WA BMW dealership (maybe they attend the same professional disdain training seminars?). As I politely asked her about how to open an account, she listed off, perfunctorily, all the ways I could be denied an account--most having to do with the banking credit check system. Knowing my credit and armed with a copy of my local lease, my valid US passport, two local recently established CA utility bills, my CA auto registration and insurance, as well as checks and cash for the deposit, I handed her the documents in exchange for a clipboard to fill out the information the bank needed. She took one look at my out-of-state ID, quickly handed me back the documents as if they were contaminated with Ebola, and in her most taunting tone exuded pure joy in informing me I was not eligible for an account with the illustrious Safe 1 Credit Union. In the 25+ years that I've opened and maintained bank accounts across the USA, never a single time with a problem, I've never before been treated like I'm a criminal. Simply for daring to try to GIVE a bank money. It would have been an easy matter for Safe 1 to inform me up front that I'd need, specifically, a CA state ID (I just relocated here two weeks ago). That this woman took such pleasure in first listing the many ways I could be rejected from admission, then, once she had the evidence of my ineligibility, drawing out the formal rejection, told me everything I needed to know about this bank. People "like me" aren't welcome there. Why do business in a neighborhood you don't want to work in and whose residents you can't bring yourself to treat with even a modicum of dignity? Already a long-time member of two credit unions on either US Coast, and principally an online banker (BECU offers the country's best online banking features, including POP-money payments directly to other people), I'll forego the humiliation and acrid attitudes of any more financial institutions' admissions committees and do all of my banking online with my current credit unions. Gone are the days when US citizens were obliged to bank at local, in-state facilities. It's a global world, and haughty, demeaning banks would do well to remember that. read more
