It's so surprising that many people don't know about it. Before it was renovated into an art studio, it was a city water treatment plant. Its parking lot used to be a wading pool. There are some cool black and white photos of what it used to look like in front of the restrooms. The space itself is amazing - super spacious and conducive to various forms of art and the required equipment. They have a jewelry making room with individual stations. There is an entire space designated for handweaving with lots of looms and fabric. An entire clay making section also exists with lots of pottery wheels. There is a big open space that's available for events and other workshops with lots of tables and chairs if needed. The magical thing about this place is that you feel creative as soon as you walk in. There's art and pictures displayed throughout the space and as you look at everything, it makes you want to sign up for all the classes they have. It represents the founding of talasi (now Tulsa), meaning "old town" by the Lochapoka Tribal Town of the Creek Nation. The Creeks were forced to leave their homeland in Alabama and travel to Indian Territory. After their arrival in 1836, the Lochapokas chose an oak tree on top of a hill that overlooked the Arkansas River as the site of their council ground. They lit a new ceremonial fire, using coals they had carried on their journey, established a busk ground, where all council business would be conducted. These grounds were also a gathering place for tribal ceremonies, feasts and games. The site continued to be used for these events until 1896. The Creeks still hold an annual celebration of their arrival at this site on October 20. The Creek Nation and several individuals bought the site and donated it to the City of Tulsa. The city turned the 1.86 acres plot into Creek Nation Council Oak Park. Richard Thornton is the architect for the park. In 2008, the Oklahoma Centennial Commission sponsored a "Trail of Tears" monument honoring the Creeks' suffering as they were forced to endure the trek. The sculpture titled Morning Prayer, was created by Creek artist Dan Brook, depicts a flame rising from a hearth.

The Center is actually a paralympic sports club which is what got my attention originally, but there is so much more here at thr Center. There is something for everyone whatever your goals and interests are. One of my passions is powerlifting and aside from a variety of machines to work on they do not offer a powerlifting program yet. I am hoping this will change for they are rapidly adding new sports all the time. Most recently adaptive cycling and wheelchair curling were added to the reportoire this semester.They also have a paralympic skill builders program which focuses on introducing several different new sports such as archery, wheelchair rugby and badminton, as well as some pre-existing ones such as wheelchair basketball and tennis! There are adult members here of all age ranges....come check it out!! My rating will be a perfect score for me when the powerlifting is ever added, but I am glad to be a member and invite others to come visit and see what is here for you.

Bike Club is one of my favorite nonprofits. They operate with the simple belief that bikes change…read morelives. What started as small bike giveaways in 2008 evolved into a weekly afterschool program at Emerson Elementary in 2014. Since then, it has exponentially grown and it now operates in 38 TPS schools. The amazing thing about Bike Club is that they rely on committed volunteers to run their programs. That's how I first heard of them. They were looking for trainings to make sure their afterschool programs were high quality. They have volunteer cookouts where everyone gets together to meet each other and share how their clubs are going. These were hosted at breweries before, but now they have a headquarters of their own on the west side. I'm absolutely obsessed with their new building. It's intentionally built with ultimate functionality in mind. From a space to build and store the bikes and helmets they give kids after they complete the program, to a maintenance/repair shop, and smooth connection to the trail system. It blows you away. I got a tour where the architect was one of the guides and it was super cool to hear his insight on the why behind the design. The attention to detail is unmatched. For those interested in getting involved in their afterschool programs, they usually start in September. It runs for 20-25 weeks, finishing in May. Each club has around 20 students and 5 volunteers. First, they focus on building cycling skills, life skills (confidence, respect, following rules, etc.) and STEM learning. Then they add more off-campus rides and experiences, allowing kids to experience their neighborhood and our city in a new way. They celebrate the end of the program each year with a huge ride from the BMX headquarters north of downtown to the Gathering Place. It's amazing to see 500+ kids riding their bikes all together.

I don't think there's a reservation system. The water fountains have spots for your dog which is great!
