I'm not sure how to judge Saddle Up. They've been in Lake George for quite a while - if they were no good, I doubt they'd still be there. The horses appear to be well cared for, and our guide was friendly and conversational. Their land is beautiful, the ride is not a short jaunt, and you get some nice views of the lake. That being said, we waited for probably 45 minutes (if not longer) after our reservation time before we got on horses (late August 2021). I get it, pandemic, everyone's short staffed, but if that's the case, then take fewer reservations? It was annoying, esp since we had no idea the wait would be that long. We were keeping our kids occupied thinking that the horses would be coming any minute. Even some forewarning about our wait time would have been helpful. The other minus was that the supervisors had very short patience with the riders. And we weren't about to make a fuss, I know very little about horses but I know that as with many animals, if you freak out, they freak out. So we were okay, but some of the senior staff needed to take a few deep breaths. Definitely spoiled the vibe, esp since my kids were a little nervous. Thankfully, our guide was good, and we did have a lovely ride in the end. Again, to sum up - lovely views, lovely ride, but the operation is stressed, and it impacts the experience. Owners, if you're reading this, please consider taking fewer reservations in the high season, or talk to your senior staff about being patient with novice riders (who are likely the majority of your customer base). My fiancé and I had a great time! We did have an hour wait with a reservation but due to the pandemic and everybody wanting to do family stuff outdoors we understood. The staff was nice and courteous. Our tour guide was Kaley. She was fantastic. Answers any questions we had and was super sweet and made the trail fun. My fiancé had the biggest horse (Tiny) and I had Spike. Horses were beautiful, well behaved and well kept. Our trail was through the forest and had two lake views. Ride was an hour long and very peaceful. I recommend buying a horseshoe that they personalize to remember such a great time. This is a must do when you come to Lake George read more

If you're new to horseback riding or just want to stay local, it's an acceptable ride. I've been 5 times in my 3 trips to LG, but the most recent ride was disappointing. There are several better, longer trails within 20 minutes of the village, & I did one earlier in the week, but this is the only one I know of with views of the lake. Basically, I pay for the two lake views on the trail & when I want to get out of the house on my own. Our guide was from North Carolina. She came up with the horses they brought up this summer. She scooted right on by the lake views & interacted with only the first two riders in the group. She offered no instruction despite the first two riders clearly being novices. The "1 hour ride" lasted 41 minutes. Yes, I timed it start to finish. What was the difference? Prior rides the guides made a point to pause at the lake views (especially at the top), let us take pictures, & simply enjoy the view for a few minutes. They also provided instructions to the newbies on the trail. She did not. In short, there are better trails out there (think Mountain View Rocking B Ranch, for example). The only reasons to go here are convenience & lake views. Without acknowledging the importance of the latter, it's not worth it. read more

I've always wanted to do horseback riding & late Aug 2021 I went up to Lake George for a few days & found out about this place on google. So glad I did as it was a great experience. They have so many different horses so everyone can be matched to the correct one according to the riders size & weight- 250lbs is the limit although I think the big horses can easily handle 300lbs. It was 80 bucks(adult) for 1 hour. The trail was well maintained & felt longer than an hour which is good. They give you quick pointers & the basics on how to steer your horse. Our tour guide was Kris & she was fantastic. She had a great sense of humor + she's been in the biz for over 25 years so she has a lot of knowledge of the property and horses. My brother & I are both above 6' 230+lbs so we waited a little while till 2 of their biggest horse became available(remember the rider & horse have to match big rider/big horse). My horse was named Diesel & my brother's Doc. They were very well behaved horses with funny personalities. There stable is very busy but trust me they do their absolute best to keep the groups moving & to get everyone accommodated reservation or not. It's been in the same family for 75 years. Everyone I encountered on the staff were really nice & friendly people. Kris kept us entertained throughout the trail. My brother & I asked her a lot of questions & she gave thorough answers to all of them. A good guide is an absolute must, you don't want someone who is quiet & responds "I don't know" to all of your questions. She even told us it was going to rain in 10 minutes & not a second of a delay after 10 mins passed it started raining. The trail was extra beautiful with the rain I just loved it. There's couple of views of the lake on the trail & it's amazing to see from horseback. Unfortunately you aren't allowed to take phones with you on the trail or if you do you're not allowed to take it out because your hands have to hold the saddle and reigns at all times for safety reasons. But once you get back the staff is more than happy to take pics for you from your phone. All in all it was a memorable experience & I will def be back for more. read more

DANGEROUS AND UNHELPFUL. My family went here yesterday my cousin fell off a horse and fractured her spine while the tour guide and other workers literally stood there and did nothing to help. We have a family of 5 so including TIP it was almost $500. I am totally fine paying for the experience and it was satisfactory. We booked in advance and they were ready for us when we arrived, which was nice. No one was super friendly, it seemed like the employees didn't feel like being there. We went out for the trip and our guide was fine (again not super friendly). There are two views of the lake. Both views are very quick as the horses don't stop at all. After the second quick view of the lake, I asked our guide if we could get a photo (which is basically the whole reason we took the tour). She said "yes, when we get back". So we arrived back at the parking lot/horse pen area and we got the picture. There was no scenic background, the person took one picture with my phone while two other employees held the horses (they are also now in our picture). I thought they could have done a better job. If it was my place, I would have a camera person at the top of the mountain, tie the horses to a pole and sell pictures of groups mounted on their horses with the lake view in the background. My opinion, $500 was a bit much. read more

My family decided on Saddle Up based on some reviews and we wanted to a little further up the lake. We made our reservations online and the morning of our ride we were called to postpone our ride due to incoming weather. We so appreciated not being on the trail when the storm rolled in. We moved our ride to the following morning and all had a great time including our first timers. The guide was informative and supported our 10 & 12 year olds questions. We're on vacation in Lake George and I've always thought horseback riding would be a cool thing to do. I did website/FB/Yelp research a bit however couldn't find any current and up-to-date pricing for the tour; neither the website nor the greeting stall on premises displays the price in any way beforehand, so although we were financially prepared for it, hearing $120 cost made my ears prick up a bit. I do respect the pricing though and understand that the care of horses and maintenance of trail and area all have their own expenses. It was about a 20-25min wait for our turn, but once we were getting ready to go, we were asked our riding experience, our personal build was briefly assessed, and we were matched and fitted with our horses. My bf was happy to get the beautiful, gentle giant Tiny, and I was matched with Mustang, who was sweet and, all things and terrain considered, an easy ride. Our trail guide Heidi was nice. She stopped the line every so often to check on the people towards the end (which happened to be my bf and I) and gave occasional reminders throughout regarding how to direct/command the horses. This was my first time horseback riding as an adult and it was quite an enjoyable experience. The trail through the Adirondack environment was quiet, beautiful, and peaceful, although the scenic view of Lake George was only visible once or twice, and only for a minute or two. I didn't feel comfortable looking anywhere but ahead for more than just a second or two, so I couldn't enjoy a lingering look. If you're looking for a fun, minimal physically intensive activity to do, I'd recommend this place. The staff was quite friendly and it was an overall enjoyable experience. read more

I walked up without a reservation and I was on horseback within 15 minutes. The horse was well matched with my size and experience. The staff made sure I was comfortable and they explained what to do to control the horse. My guide, Emily, was very attentive and knowledgeable. Great time! Great family fun. It was very relaxing and fun. Nice scenery ride through the Adirondack Mountains and a great view of Lake George. A bit costly but worth the money. We have no experience riding horses but they made it easy for us to do so. We did the one hour ride ($50 each person) not knowing if we would last the ride. Wish we had gone longer. I had the best time for being the 1st time on a horse. My horse was Gunsmoke he scared me a lil in the beginning but i made thru the whole ride thru the mountain where you get to see Lake George from a top of the mountain. I have some experience with riding but not enough to qualify as expert. Our group of 3 (me, my sister, my mom) all were paired with horses that fit us perfectly. My big lug, "John Wayne" was a draft mix (yes, I'm on the larger side) and I couldn't have been happier with my mount. He was well behaved with a little attitude which made it fun. April, our guide, was engaging and very personable. We had a great time with her. For those who are expecting to canter or even jog much, this is not the place for you. You are taken up a hill and get some great views of the lake, but there are very few opportunities for your horses to do more than walk. Still, it's a great ride with some beautiful scenery. My family went here yesterday and my cousin ended up falling off her horse and got stepped on by a horse on her lower back. The staff was extremely unhelpful and seemed to not even know what to do. The place shouldn't even have been open after it had rained earlier and the trails were wet and slippery. My cousin ended up being rushed to urgent care and the ER and now has a fractured spine. The stables were nice and the staff seemed kind. We've done rides in a bunch of times - and love it, However, there were a number of outstanding issues at this location. The guide. Usually a guide will provide information about the area/history as you go... or you know, talk. He might have spoken 10 times the entire hour, and most of those times he was just saying "we're going down a hill, lean back". He even offended a couple of the party members. It was just awkward. I mean, not everyone can be a great guide, and I sympathize with him for being difficult to understand. But the company should not put him in the position of a guide - it's completely unfair to the customers. Based on other reviews it seems like other people have had great guides, but clearly it's a gamble. The view. It was honestly a beautiful forest, but there was only one vista of the lake. I totally get that the woods are beautiful, too, and that has to be appreciated. But with the lake right there, and the mountains, you should go into this expecting to not really see the lake. So, just a heads up! The price. Higher than average for what came down to a far below average experience. read more

My child enjoyed the pony ride - while it was fun and the price was fair ($12), it was quite a short ride (back and forth in a straight line a couple of times). I would have appreciated if the staff talked with us a little more, showed us around, gave us some interesting info about the ponies/horses (I had to ask the pony's name)...kids appreciate that kind of stuff, especially if they have never been on a horse before and know really nothing about them. Make it more of an experience instead of a 5 minute pony ride and then get back in our car and leave. read more

The guide was exceptionally patient and friendly with us, and we truly appreciated them taking us up the hill even though it was a slow, gray day and they had thoughts of closing early. I had only been on a horse once before, so they took great care to make sure I was comfortable in the saddle and with the reins before we set out. Granted, it was as much for the horse's benefit as my own, but the bottom line is if I can do an hour in the saddle up and down the hilly trail, almost anyone can. After waiting an hour and 15 min after my reservation time. Me and my girlfriend were thrown onto horses, after telling them we were both beginners. They have minimal instructions on how to control the horse. So off we went going at very very slow speeds because the horses were clearly exhausted and over worked. I felt so bad for them I wanted to get off and give the horse a break. The horses were not cooperating at all. The horse kept looking back at me like, come on man give me a break. The saddle was not sitting right at all on the horse and kept leaning to the left at one point I almost fell off. So after we were done the "tour guide" because it wasn't much of a tour, mentioned where her tip was meanwhile i paid the gratuity online after I paid for the tickets. This was my kids first time ever horse back riding and overall it was good. Our guide was very sweet and patient, checked in that we were all doing ok several times. It's 55 dollars per person, for about an hour, or however long it takes to do the trail for your group essentially. My horse did need more direction from me than the others in the group of 6 and seemed very tired, I felt sorry for my horse honestly. I was nervous I was going to go right into a tree and we we close to the edge on many occasions and it took quite a bit of coaxing to get my horse to cooperate. The views were very pretty though. Definitely be sure to hit the bathroom before you go bc the only bathroom there is a porta potty that was full and couldn't flush, so, so awful. The woman at the front desk was lacking majorly in the attitudeb department, not a smile to be had and just seemed cranky overall. read more

My wife and I went riding today. I rode the biggest horse they have (Tiny) because I'm a tall and generously proportioned man. The horses are well trained and the guide was great. The trail is well marked but is a bit of a climb up and down the foothills of the Adirondacks. I highly recommend these stables as they know what they are doing. read more

The girl at the register charged me $200 instead of $100. And if I hadn't caught that on time, I would have been pretty screwed. That's a 100$ screw-up.
