I had no idea what this would be like, since the majority of Curry houses in the UK over-sweeten…read moretheir dishes, probably in response to some inclination in the British palate for sugar. But this place was just down the street from the hotel I was at, and I thought chicken tikka masala or butter chicken would be nice. When I got there I was greeted warmly and seated. I ordered a British beer on tap (John Smith's) and perused the menu. They had Butter Chicken. The description did not specify what part of the chicken they used, which I hoped meant they would use dark meat. Chicken tikka masala seems to be always white meat, but various places serve butter chicken with dark. I think that may be the traditional way. When it came time to order I asked specifically whether or not the dish was sweet. He described it as rich and creamy and only a bit sweet. I rolled the dice and ordered it, prepared to have them doctor it if it came back like the sweet and sour chicken that most places pass off as real curry. Fast forward... the Butter Chicken comes, and the waiter pauses a moment to make sure it tastes ok for me, so I take a taste... oh! Yes, that will do fine; it's not too sweet! And as I started eating it with the rice I realized that this was exceptional; surely the cook made it from scratch. The sauce was nicely blended and thick, with just a few pieces of ingredients to let you know it didn't begin life as some quick-serve powder mix. It was fragrant, rich, and full of flavor. It turned out to be among the best Butter Chicken I've had anywhere! And the accompanying Pilau Rice (a few more pennies than white rice) was beautiful as well as tasty. Give this place a try if you want a delicious, authentic Butter Chicken. 5 solid stars.

We'd long been intrigued by their Happy Hour and Sunday Buffet offers, and recently decided to check out the buffet and see what was on offer over the "20 courses" claimed on the A-board. If I'm being honest, the only real gripe I had with our visit to Kismet was the service. Granted, it was a Sunday, and yes we turned up at a point where the restaurant was not particularly busy, but the waiter just didn't seem arsed. I don't know whether he was going for a broody silent vibe, but it was a bit... offputting. One of his colleagues, on the other hand, who brought some of our food and drinks over was great so maybe just an off day... Right, the real reason we went - the food. The Sunday buffet deal is £8.95 a person (as of May 19 when I wrote this), and genuinely I cannot complain at the amount of food available for the price. Obviously, the first thing we were presented with - unannounced, thanks to the surly waiter - was poppadoms and the usual accompanying goodies. We got 4 poppadoms, so 2 each, and they were fine. Next up was a mixed starter, comprised of some fried potato slices, onion bhajis, samosas, some spicy chicken goujon-style things (which were my favourite) and some bone-in chicken. Aside from some of the chicken being a tad overcooked, this was great and they didn't skimp on the portions. Then, once you're done with the starters, it's on to the main course. As you might expect, it's self service and you basically help yourself to the contents of the serving station. Our options included chicken tikka masala, chicken rogan josh, chicken madras, lamb karahi, bombay potatoes, a lentil curry I can't remember the name of, as well as the usual pilau rice and plain naan bread. Of the dishes I sampled, if you'd given me any one of them at an a la carte price I might've been underwhelmed. At £8.95 and help yourself, I'm well happy to munch a little bit of various perfectly decent curries. I probably could've done with eating a bit less, to be honest, but you can't argue the value of the offering. Not sure how they worked out the 20 courses, though. Didn't really matter, I didn't have the capacity for much else after my second visit to the curries... To round out with everything else, I don't think they have a soda fountain - the coke I ordered was room temperature-ish with ice, so likely from a large bottle? (For a little family run place, though, not surprising if it is.) The decor is... vintage, let's put it that way. But I think that's part of the charm. I'll definitely be back... there's more curry to try!

I didn't feel rushed though, and bf loved the immediate arrival of beer to his hand. Food wise, I was tempted by a few things on this interesting Bangladeshi menu and got some helpful and decisive advice from the waiter. In the end I want for the chicken thawa which wasn't particularly unusual in flavour (I chickened out of the satkora fruit option which I will get next time) but very well done and a very generous portion. I thought the aloo gobi was the best I've had in ages. We also tried onion bhajis and I would say Blue Nile is slightly beaten out by Stockport rival Last Monsoon in terms of flavour and crispiness. Bf had lamb handi which he really enjoyed - the meat was tender and not at all stringy or dry. Definitely recommend if you like lamb. As above service is very good and it's a nice restaurant with some cool tropical fish tanks in the walls. Kind of reminds me of the Purple Pakora in Poynton. Overall this is yet another good restaurant in the independent Hazel Grove scene (we commented on Friday that the chains have not moved in here, which is maybe why there is such diversity and quality) and I will be sure to come back.
