Racing up Route 6 from Hyannis, I noticed that Google Maps made a rare error and grossly underestimated my travel time to get to Marconi Beach, where I scheduled my one hour private lesson with Ben, the owner. He had called me the night before to confirm my lesson, so I called back to inform him that I was running late. I left a voice message, and he called back to confirm my arrival. He immediately offered to extend my lesson time in order to ensure that I got an hour of his time, despite the fact that I showed up 15 minutes late. While we walked to the Beach, Ben went over my needs and aims for our lesson. He really put me as ease, as he did not use a cookie-cutter curriculum but tailored my lesson based on my previous surfing experiences. I'm sure that if you were a greenhorn going out into the water for the first time, he would have provided the same personalized lesson plan. Because my lesson was only an hour, Ben made sure to spend only a few minutes going over the basics on the sand. We spent nearly the whole hour in the water. I really appreciated that he made sure I got my money's worth. Since I was late, our lesson was cut a bit short. However, he let me keep the board for an additional hour while he supervised other lessons. And though he didn't have to, he keep giving me pointers despite our official lesson hour having been completed. Ben is one of many instructors at Scared School. There were three others, easily identifiable by the white caps with the school's logo. What they all shared were really loud personalities that resulted in their enthusiasm being picked up by the other students. They were really energizing without being intimidating or patronizing. I'm sure people on the shore were wondering who these guys were, hooping and hollering in the water. But they kept the energy level up and never let falls or surfing miscues keep a student down. Hey mommas out there... this review is for you! We've been coming to the Cape for years and finally got the guts up to take a surf lesson... something I've always wanted to do but found it intimidating for various reasons... including the fact that I'm a non proficient surfing mom, and well, do moms surf? I got hives at just the idea of tossing around fledgling in the waves beside the smooth and slick hotshots out there (clearly i don't like putting myself out there... i love trying new things... just not in front of a beach full of people). Just keeping it real here. SO, I was stoked when my son showed an interest in surfing, knowing he'd be my perfect excuse to try it myself. Why should he have all the fun? My 10 year old son was up and surfing in no time (a benefit of being 70 pounds), appearing effortless. But I give HUGE props to Zack and Johnny for their insights and pointers to me for how to make slight adjustments each time to finally catch my own wave. Once I got the right technique down I was good to go... and wouldn't have gotten there without them. Truly! Their encouragement, humor, chill tone, and good vibes made the experience a lot of fun and nothing like my preconceived notions of intimidation. And hey, they're just really nice guys! Great first time surfing experience for our three boys, ages 8, 10, and 14! Ben, our instructor and the founder of the school, connected with them in a playful; yet, structured way - much like a big cousin. Ben is an excellent teacher, explaining how waves are formed, where the good surfing waves are, how to avoid rip currents, and what to do if you find yourself being pulled out to sea. I was really impressed with how he taught all three boys, connecting with them and keeping their attention, while guiding them through the understanding of the ocean waves and skills of getting up on the board. They were all able to ride the waves and catch that great feeling that only surfers know. They learned so much in just two hours. When I asked them what I needed to know to surf, they all had excellent pointers and tips to share with me based on their experiences! I feel confident that the boys are now ready to safely practice surfing (of course with Mom and Dad nearby). Ben gave us great information about what to look for when buying a first surf board and even told us to call him as questions arise. He did a great job sharing his love of surfing with our family - we are looking forward to next years lessons with him! read more

We met Ben from Sacred Surf at White Crest Beach to start our first ever surf lesson. It was us (one strapping 17 year old, and one mega-fit 49 year old) and a cool, brave 12 year old girl. The weather and surf conditions were excellent and despite being nervous we couldn't wait to hit the waves. To start off, Ben briefed us about what we would be doing during the lesson, then immediately dove into the anatomy of a wave. Ben was obviously a very knowledgeable and serious surfer, who loved his sport and his job. He quickly taught us the basics, then we dove into the water. Within a few attempts under Ben's close supervision we had all caught a wave. Ben gradually built our confidence and all three of us gradually improved. He supervised us individually and worked on our weaknesses until we were all confident we could go out and surf on our own. David, the 49-year old, had looked forward to this his entire life and it exceeded his expectations, and we all intend to carry on surfing. Sacred Surf School took 15 of us from age 9 to 54 -- all first time surfers -- out for a highlight afternoon of the summer! They gave us a really nice introduction to the ocean, tides, source of waves, how to spot them, and how to surf. Within the first half hour we had all gotten up and over the course of the afternoon each of us got up a lot and had some nice rides. From my 10 year old daughter: it was amazing. It was really fun and the instructors were great. From my 14 year old niece: the instructors were encouraging and were always helpful when we struggled. Their positive attitude made it a very enjoyable experience. From my 54 year old brother in law: great instructors who were patient, knowledgeable. This was a great way to learn. Each of us felt like we had the individual attention we needed to learn and have fun! 24 hours later, the older generation is feeling pretty young (and proud of ourselves). read more

I couldn't recommend Sacred Surf School any higher if you are interested in taking a surfing lesson on Cape Cod. My 10 year old son wanted to try surfing but was a bit tentative. The instant he met Ben, his instructor, all his hesitation evaporated, and mine did as well. Ben was absolutely amazing and put us immediately at ease. He was welcoming, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. My son enjoyed hanging out with Ben as much as he liked being in the water! Ben's great instruction coupled with his easy personality was a winning combination - my son rode in his very first wave and many after that. We took the private lesson route, which was very reasonable and even supplied a wet suit for the lesson. We also had some short interaction with Ben's partner, who also seemed equally amazing. Great experience. We are looking forward to more lessons next summer, including for the adults! read more

I impulse-bought an epoxy funboard in late April without any surf experience at all. After many failed attempts at teaching myself (and a bruised ego), I booked a private 1:1 lesson with Sacred Surf School. I cannot express how awesome the entire experience was. My instructor, Zach, was friendly, accommodating, and very patient. Thanks to his guidance, it only took a few wipeouts before I was able to ride a wave on my own. Sacred Surf School is truly unique and I highly recommend booking a lesson with them. There are many surf schools on Cape Cod, but none whose instructors genuinely love surfing and sharing their lifelong knowledge of the sport with their students. I have been successfully surfing since my lesson with Zach and plan to return to Eastham for round two very soon. Again - Sacred Surf School was worth every penny. read more

I am 14 years old and took a surf lesson with a local surf school in Wellfleet and thought they were too commercialized. I never got up on the board and I really didn't feel like they cared if I was successful. I took a group lesson with Sacred Surf School and had a blast. My instructor, Greg, explained how to pick the best waves, how to get up on the board, and more. I was able to catch my first wave and now I'm hooked. I took another lesson with them, this time a private one. Zack was my instructor and was also great. Since I had already taken a lesson, he was able to continue from where I left off. He had me catching so many waves!! I love this school. I am going to continue taking private lessons every year and hope that I can teach at Sacred Surf School some day. Who Knows!! Ben - my twin daughters and brother thoroughly enjoyed our lesson, and were so excited to all get up and do some real surfing! Greg was a superb teacher and took the time to coach each of us in recognizing the best waves, positioning ourselves appropriately and understanding when to stand up. Your equipment (the big boards and the full wet suits) worked very well for us beginners and made us feel like we had been surfing for years. Greg also added so much fun to the lesson with his stories, and reminders to use the proper surf lingo. He really made the difference in our enjoyment of the time. On our annual trip to Welfleet we decided to try something new and take a family surfing lesson. Despite the four of us being total beginners from ages 9 - 49, the instructors did a great job making all of us comfortable in larger than typical waves and were very encouraging with each of our attempts to get on the board. Even though the park rangers at Marconi Beach held up the instructors when we first got there, Ben quickly called in another to take his place with our class (so there would still be two instructors for my family and another boy) while he dealt with the rangers. All of the instructors were very friendly and we all had a great time. We'll definitely sign up for another round of lessons with Sacred Surf when we go back next year. read more

My 11 y/o daughter fell in love with the movie "Soul Surfer." Then, while visiting my cousin in North Truro, we heard about Ben and the "Sacred Surf School." Honestly ! I just had to follow her and her dream of learning to surf....can't get any more coincidental than this. Ben is great ! He had no concerns nor did my daughter. I sat on the beach biting my nails as she got knocked around by the waves....but by golly she did it and Ben was right there encouraging her, teaching her and best of all...guiding her patiently. Sacred Surf School is the best on the Cape! The online booking is easy and web site user friendly. The manager who sets up the lessons is friendly, easy going, and clearly excited to get in the water to teach as well. My son has taken lessons the last 2 summers and has had a blast. The instructors last year, which was his first time on a surf board, were fun, friendly and patient and got him hooked! Ben was awesome to work with last year. I am thoroughly impressed with this young buissness owner. This summer my son has had a series of private lessons that have been fabulous. What a great find! Sacred Surf School was exactly what we were looking for. We recently signed up our kids(ages 14 and 16) for a surf lesson during our vacation at Wellfleet. We've been coming up to the Cape for years, but hadn't been able to find a convenient and flexible entree to surfing for our kids. The instructors were knowledgable, friendly and most importantly very attentive. There were three students in the class. We were impressed with the engagement and attention dedicated to each new surfer. The instructor worked equally as hard and made the experience a fun adventure. Only one of the three had any prior experience, but all were able to get up and enjoy several good runs. We'll be back! read more

Never having surfed before, I took a two hour "Ocean Classroom" lesson through Sacred Surf School, and I had an amazing experience! We spent about 20 minutes on the beach talking about a few things and practicing popping up on the board, then we went right into the water and got started! My instructor was encouraging, fun, and very helpful. He helped me correct my mistakes as we went and made me feel very at ease in the water. I was able to get up after a few tries, and even started working on controlling/turning my board by the end of the lesson! The location, Marconi beach, was beautiful as well. My 11 year old son took a 2-hour lesson last week. I couldn't believe how many times this not-particularly-athletic kid stood up and got a good ride going on a wave. It was so awesome to watch and he had an absolute blast. Needless to say he's going back for more this week. His brother who said, "there's no way I want to try surfing" watched the lesson and was chomping at the bit to get in the water and try it. He's going for his first lesson this week. What solid, professional instructorship from Sacred Surf today! Having lived on the Cape for 10 years, I had never tried surfing and had no lofty expectations. Tim spent the necessary time to review surfing essentials like sandbars, etiquette and swells, then scaffolded the rest of the lesson, integrating and lessening supports-- pushing your board into an incoming wave where needed, then just vocalizing instructions. By the lesson's culmination, I felt confident in my ability to read waves, paddle, and stand on my board to ride the wave. My son and daughter, ages 15 and 20, took the ocean classroom and they both had a great time. The instructors were all super nice and made my kids feel comfortable right from the start. Ben's laid back personality was perfect and with the one on one attention from the instructors, they were up and surfing very quickly. My girlfriend and I just got done with a 2 day lesson package with Sacred Surf School. We had an amazing time and would definitely recommend them to anyone. We had never surfed before and with their instruction and encouragement we were able to go from floundering in the waves to riding them. Our instructors were all great, including Zach, Jack, Tim, and Steve. They were friendly and made learning to surf fun.
