We had our first child through the midwife program at IU hospital and loved our experience, but hated having to stay two days at the hospital afterwards. We decided to go here for our second so we could get the same type of care but not have the long stay afterwards. Everyone was nice, willing to talk and get to know you and support you in your journey. When it was time to give birth, it was a smooth experience. They checked in as needed but also gave me space as I was in labor. I chose a water birth and everything went quickly and smoothly. And a few hours after birth, we got to go home and sleep in our own bed and just check in the following day. If you're looking for a lower intervention birthing experience without a hospital stay, but also not a full on give birth at home experience, this is the perfect in between! read more

This is the place to be if you want to have a peaceful uninterrupted birth. If you are high maintenance, it may be best to go to a hospital. If you want to enjoy the experience without being bothered every 2 seconds go to Sacred Roots. My wife really wanted to have the baby here after our oldest and 3rd child were born in a hospital. It was so annoying for her to get woken up and have the baby woken up every 2 hours for random checks. I delivered our second child at home in our living room and my wife wanted more of that sort of experience. Our 4th was born here and my wife got to invite her sisters to be with her and experience the birth. The midwife was awesome and did her job exactly how my wife wanted her to do it. My wife is a strong lady who doesn't need a constant you got this girl to give birth. After my son was born we made the food we brought and a few hours later we got to go home and enjoy the new member of the family in the comforts of our home. Now we are expecting our 5th and my wife wanted me to just deliver the baby at home like I did with our 2nd child. I am not up for that so Sacred Roots is the next best thing. If you do not have any issues with your pregnancy or a great amount of fear about having a baby, Sacred Roots is perfect! read more

Everyone was super friendly and supportive during my entire pregnancy. Other than that, they missed the fact that I had Atypical Pre-eclampsia, they left me to labor alone at home for 2 full weeks without providing any help to get labor moving along, and then when my water finally broke they ignored me for 5 hours. When I finally convinced someone to let me come in, they tried to send me home (with my broken water) because I wasn't dilated enough, and when I refused to leave they put me in the family room instead of a labor room "until you change your mind" I should have seen all of this as red flags and gone to the hospital, but I was in labor (again, this was 2 weeks by this time) and wasn't thinking straight. I ended up giving birth at the hospital a couple of days later, my baby went to the NICU and I stayed for a week being treated (finally) for my Pre-eclampsia. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! I am sharing this review to make other potential and current patients aware of how Sacred Roots operates so that I may be able to spare this from happening to someone else. I gave birth to my daughter at Riley Children's Hospital on May 30th after a non-emergency transfer from Sacred Roots. I had been admitted to Sacred Roots on May 29th at 5cm dilated with a cervical lip present at time of admission. They had told me previously that my baby was posterior and that it was likely we would have to do a hospital transfer as these births tend to have trouble progressing, but then proceeded to ignore every indication that something was wrong. From the beginning, my midwife, January Skye McDonald (absolutely avoid her at all costs), was very disconnected, spending a large portion of time in an office on her laptop. She did vitals and then would leave again. My husband and mother had to retrieve her to support me multiple times during my labor. My water broke around 7pm on the 29th and it had meconium present. I started pushing at around 8pm, and didn't transfer to the hospital until almost 3:30am. I was in excruciating pain for the large majority of my labor there, screaming and crying for hours and hours with no comfort from the medical staff except the occasional affirmation. The cervical lip was present the entire time, and by the time I arrived at the hospital, it was so swollen I couldn't have given birth anyway. I received an epidural and my daughter was born at 9:39am. When she was born, she was completely unresponsive and blue, the cord was wrapped around her neck 360 degrees, and she had to be resuscitated. She was born with severe shoulder dystocia. She spent 12 days in the NICU where she was placed on a hypothermic treatment blanket for 72 hours, was given antibiotics for sepsis, and suffered an acute kidney injury. She also suffered a minor brain injury from being oxygen deprived for so long. If we had waited to be transferred for any longer, she may not have made it.  I have spoken to multiple medical professionals at Riley Hospital, as well as my personal OBGYN, and all of them were horrified at my treatment. Many of them told me that when the cervical lip didn't go away and I had meconium present in my waters, January should have strongly suggested if not insisted on a hospital transfer. She never did. Not only did she not suggest it, she never told me anything was going wrong or was an issue. She was very dismissive of me the entire birth experience and even suggested I load up in the car and drive 30 minutes to Riley at 9cm dilated instead of calling an ambulance.  When I brought this to Sacred Roots attention, the response was awful. They didn't check to see if my insurance was in network until long after my birth, even though they charged me the in network price. I wrote an email explaining in detail my experience and that I wanted to see if we could come to some sort of resolution, and sent it to the owner, Angela Lyttle. She wrote back a very emotionless and dismissive email, but did say she would meet with me to debrief my records. I asked her what her goals for the meeting would be, since I had a feeling it would become less about resolution and more about trying to convince me what happened was normal. She then ignored my email for almost 2 weeks, but responded almost immediately when I sent her a follow up email. She then took back her offer to meet with me, sent me links for therapy, and a link to a forum (not a medically accredited one either) about how a cervical lip is normal. I then told her I wanted to see my records from Sacred Roots and to forward them to me. That took about another week to receive, and when I did get it the record was wildly incomplete. They withheld every page about my actual labor experience at Sacred Roots, only attaching my hospital records and prenatal records. I sent her an email telling her that the records were incomplete, and that I wanted the entire record that I had requested. Once again, I was ignored for almost 2 weeks. I sent another follow up email and the owner responded very quickly, telling me I needed to contact the clinical director. She essentially couldn't care less about my experience and shoved me off onto someone else. I called the clinical director, who was very kind and was the only person at the facility who showed any kind of empathy for my situation. She held a meeting with the owner, Angela Lyttle, the billing coordinator, the office administrator, and herself to discuss my bill and my situation. They ended up deciding a 10% discount was good enough and invoiced me for over $3000. The bill itself isn't what I am upset about, but rather, my treatment at Sacred Roots. Every person I worked with there after my birth except the clinical director was unprofessional, lacked empathy and understanding, and in my opinion, lacked the bedside manor or medical knowledge and expertise they need to be working with patients. read more

this place is a scam! first they told me that my insurance was in their network and gave me a 3x3 piece of paper that showed a breakdown of what I'd owe after my insurance. but on the other side showed what my out of network cost may be because they hadn't recieved a response from my insurance about whether they'd accept the center or not. so they kept billing them as in network.... I made a payment toward my in network cost as instructed and come time after having my baby. my insurance was being billed from the very first visit as out of network and I was never told so I ended up owing way more than I expected.. then I was never told there was a separate cost not added on that piece of paper for the birth suite itself that my insurance didn't cover. I was only informed from the very beginning about the in person office visits and was told I was in network and would only be billed for such. now I'm $3,600 in the hole at the place and blindsided. what is even worse is I told them I could have my child at the hospital for $1,200 because I met my deductible and I worked at a hospital as a nurse. so the whole time looking back I felt like they practically took advantage of me and my financial situation. i had bad postpartum depression and this made it even worse esp because I stopped going here for care afterwards and was not established with a new OBGYN in the area from moving locally, as I expected to be following up with them. i have lost all trust in businesses who look like theyre really trying to care for others, as a nurse myself, this was horrible customer service and dishonesty. never again will I do midwifery because of this nor will I recommend this place. read more

Excellent prenatal care in a warm environment that supports informed choice. Their offices and birthcenter rooms are just over a year old and are so modern and clean. They offer a great array of childbirth classes and offer homebirths as well. I highly recommend this group of midwives. read more

I love the Midwives at Sacred Roots. They are caring and qualified. Sacred Roots looks plain from the outside, but once you step inside it is inviting and wonderful. All of the staff are friendly and personable. They have 3 birthing rooms, each with a queen or king sized bed, a comfortable birthing tub and attached bathroom. If you are hoping to have a natural birth, and don't want to use a hospital or birth at home, Sacred Roots is the perfect place to go! read more
