Lewey Lake Campground - Campsite 34 Perspective

A small lake, no large motorized boats are allowed, so it is quiet and peaceful. In fact, the greatest disturbances tend to be other campers who insist on playing their music loudly. Thankfully, there is usually a good amount of space between sites, and most people respect the quiet hours. While this campground is a long way away from where I live, it is definitely worth the drive. If you are interested in fall camping, I can't even being to describe how beautiful it is to wake up in the morning to see the lake surrounded by a riot of colors.

Located close to Indian Lake, the Lewey Lake Campground has multiple entrances off of Route 30N with the main campground the furthest south and what I have labeled on the Yelp map. Keep in mind that the address does not come up properly on Google Maps or Bing maps so look at the Yelp placement for more accuracy. We were at the furthest north campsites which are pretty isolated from everyone else. The sites our group stayed at were situated right next to a stream which was great for sleeping. You couldn't hear anyone around you and even with the goings on at our lower campsite we couldn't hear them at all. There only outhouses at this location of the campground but it is a short drive to the main sites that have real bathrooms and showers along with a nice, simple beach. Despite how close it is to Route 30N, I definitely felt isolated in a good way and would highly recommend staying there for people looking for some interesting camping with reasonably convenient location.

It's a beautiful little private island with a pit toilet and fire pit with picnic tables. This year we spent one night at site 26, which was a little too close to other rowdier sites, and one night at 39, which was beautiful and secluded. If you're thinking about camping here but don't have a boat, rent a canoe! It's a nice way to get out to the islands and work up a sweat so you're ready to swim by the time you get to your site. Some words of advice: make sure you text anyone you need to while you're in Speculator or Indian Lake because if you need to get a hold of someone while you're camping you have to row back to shore, which could take hours if your site is further up the lake, then drive into town to get service; bring a roll of toilet paper with you if you don't want to use the cheapo single ply the whole time you're there; and lastly, really look at the map to make sure you know what you're getting into in terms of the trek out to your site! 32 is far enough that it feels remote but not so far you can't canoe there. Much further north and you're looking at hours of paddling. All in all a great spot to get away.

Some are located on islands, some on the shore along the lake. They're all extremely private but very primitive, a fire ring, picnic table and outhouse . There's also quite a few picnic areas if you're just going for the day. The staff at the campgrounds office are all extremely friendly and helpful, ready to answer any questions you might have. The lake is beautiful, with opportunities to get out and hike up a mountain or to a waterfall. If you're going to camp you need to bring all of your supplies with you, including drinking water. There are shower facilities that you can access at Lewey Lake Campground, just across the road from the Indian Lake access.

Intimate, yet private tents that are more like cabins (lights, ceiling fans, heaters, and a front porch with rocking chairs) dot the hillside above the rustic central meeting place, which is anchored by a huge fire pit that burns continuously throughout the season. I haven't even gotten to the food! A professional chef, at home creating in any cuisine, sets a bountiful and delicious table. I had never been glamping before. David was an awesome host the entire weekend, a friend and I drove up from NYC and were greeted with awesome local foods (sausages and cheese), produce, and a bottle of wine, we spent the night in a permanent tent structure that was pre-stocked with plenty of firewood (this was back in Oct). The host was an awesome chef, great to chat with, and was totally fine with giving us space when we needed. Additionally we packed a few food packs and went into the Caves of adirondacks. We definitely plan on coming back.

I went as a…read morecamper and SIT back in the 90's, then as a staff member in 05 and 06, and now as a volunteer. Each time I've been has been different in its own unique way. Nick P. does a great job describing Fowler. To live simply is something that many people wish they did more of. But here is a place to really put it into practice. You can walk slower, not have to worry about your cell phone going off every three minutes, and take a sunset canoe ride if you wish. A heavy emphasis is on sustainability. From recycling, to using solar panels, and even the new (gasp!) composting toilets, both young and old can take away key elements for their lives outside of camp. To be able to do all these things in an inviting Christian environment is important to the core of Camp Fowler. But those who question their spirituality or even have never been to church are still included in everything. There is singing, small group activities, and "solo" time for everyone to participate and grow in. Storytelling is used frequently, and I've always come away from camp with my imagination sharper from listening to great stories during the week. Camp Fowler is located in one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. Right in the Southern Adirondacks on Lake Sacandaga, I'm amazed each time I see the view over the lake onto the mountains.

If you strike a match in a dark room, that single little match can illuminate everything around it…read more You can light a candle with that match, or start a camp fire to keep you warm. Fowler is a place that shows you where to find the matches in the dark. I wont get into too many of my own experiences, but I can say my life has been powerfully and positivity impacted by things I learned at camp. Creating a framework for a healthy Christian society outside of boring church can show you that God, religion, and spirituality can be fun. That church can be conducted outside, or around a campfire, and that cool people pray. That there are lots of ways to learn how to live a good life, and a teacher named Jesus had some lessons worth learning. A way of life. There is God in nature for some people, and Fowler teaches to respect that. That recycling, and using only what you need are good things. Fowler teaches that you can go a week without your ipod. That when you go back to it you'll have a little different relationship with it. You might appreciate it more, you might need it less. You might realize it was silly to miss it. You might realize music comes from us, and we can make it. Fowler teaches how to be silly, and how to play games with a hundred other people. It teaches you how to climb a ladder and kiss a moose. Fowler teaches how to be part of a community. About your responsibility in that community. Kent Busman is the coordinator at Fowler, and is a bridge from the religion to real life. He leads by example, and can tell awesome stories/ fables to illuminate what he believes. He has the wonder of a child at having fun, great laugh, and clear boundaries and rules. He is an orthodox minister, but just between you and me I think he has had to wrestle with some of the more strict church rules. Kent's the kind of guy that would rather help somebody in the street because they needed it, than follow strict rules to make influential members of the community happy. If you ever watched Star Trek the Next Generation, he reminds me of captain Picard. Sometimes the captain would break the rules of the universe because the rules just don't have the subtly to fit every situation. Essentially fowler is about having fun and being in a community with a purpose. While I was staff there I saw that not every child left loving the place as much as I had, but the vast majority did. This is a wonderful place for a child (or adult volunteer) to spend a week .
