After exploring Mayaguez a bit, we lost track of time. Suddenly, we found ourselves really hungry…read moreat around 2:30 PM. We hadn't eaten since breakfast and that was around 0900. We got caught up in our adventure and didn't think to check the time. We were having too good of a time! We didn't make reservations and planned to have a go with destiny as we explored my grandmother's hometown. Mana's Gastrobar extended a warm welcome to us. We happily received it and the rest is history. Side note: Most Mayaguez restaurants close (hard close (no one is there)) until dinnertime (5 pm or later). Mana's was open until 4 PM and came to our rescue. The staff were really friendly and accommodated us as we scurried in to take our seats. We called the number on Yelp to make sure they were open. The were open and made our trip even better. Mana's menu has creative Puerto Rican cuisine. We ordered tostones for an appetizer and pechua empanada and pechuga salteada as our main dishes. The chicken was cooked and seasoned authentically. The empanada tasted great and to temperature. The restaurant had a young vibe and cool aesthetic. College age customers sat at the bar while we were eating. It made me think about what life is like in Mayaguez at their age. My grandma lived there around that age (how times change and evolve). I would come back regularly for lunch if I lived in Mayaguez. We didn't see the dinner menu or the dinner crowd vibe. It would be fun to mingle with locals and see a bit more of where my grandma is from in this setting. The server knew my mom was not a local but also a "boriua." Her kind and genuine conversation with my mom made the lunch even more authentic. The lunch was great and I'll be back to check out dinner during my next visit. Overall, we were appreciated and not turned away when we were hungry. We spent a great part of the day looking around Mayagüez where my family grew up. It was nice to visit and feel welcomed at Mana's Gastrobar.

There is plenty of seating outside, as there is inside. There are TVs both on the inside and outside, playing at a reasonable volume. The place has a nice wooden house feel to it with nice flooring. It's nothing special, but it's got a nice touch. The outside is breezy and nice, and the inside is cool and moderately lit. The place has a more night restaurant/bar feel to it. Finally, on the right side you'll find the full bar. The Service: The staff seemed very limited. We only saw one person serving the whole time. Nevertheless, he was very amiable and courteous. He had good knowledge of all the plates and what people ordered mostly. Our food took a reasonable time to arrive. Overall, great service. The Food: We ordered two different versions of the trifongo relleno, despite it not being their specialty. I had a particular craving for it today. They were out of plátano dulce, so it ended up being a bifongo with only plátano and yuca, filled with pieces of pork and the second plate with pieces of chicken breast. Those two came with a tasty broth. The plates had a fun visual presentation. They looked like mini volcanoes. The meat and poultry were seasoned very well and tasted so. The mofongo had a nice consistency and was complemented well with the broth and the mayo ketchup. There are plenty of other great plates to choose from. Take your pick, the mofongos, personally, are a great choice. The Gist: What are you waiting for? Get a couple of people together and enjoy some great food. Good location, great service, nice food, and a great atmosphere. I recommend checking it out.

The rice was full of spices and flavor that really had a nice kick to it, same with the meat and the vegetables it was cooked with. The tostones, albeit small, were really delicious. I was served a plentiful amount and felt fully satisfied. The service itself was really nice. I felt I was getting that personal attention from the server. He was informative and really gave me that western hospitality that I always enjoy. You can either order from the menu or you can order up front from the food specials or foods of the day. My big surprise was that they had freshly squeezed local orange juice. That made my day. This place would have gotten a higher rating based on those two things, but the problem lies with the pricing and the establishment itself. The pricing is not that bad, really. I paid about 8 dollars for my food but, when comparing it to other places around, it's a little higher. I am used to cheap food from other places around, given I receive student discounts. They have a student discount, but it did not do much for me. The menu we were given to glance was a bit sticky, and the establishment itself did not look spot on clean. The tables were wobbly, which is something I despise, and, when we first arrived, there was cargo covering half of the entrance. That was not too visually appealing to me. The food was great, and the people were really nice. The pricing and the restaurant itself, not so much. Give it a try for yourself.
