During what is likely going to be a once in a lifetime visit to Hedley, BC, my family and I went on…read morethe Mascot Gold Mine Tour, booked at the Snaza'ist Centre. It is an old school and in my opinion, is a well done info centre for such a small community. Here you learn about the history of the Similkameen people and the Mascot Gold Mine. The staff are also very friendly. I am a bit of a bathroom inspector, so I like that the restrooms are nice too. The Gold Mine Tour as a whole is worth the fee and time. However, you must know that you aren't going to see much of the mine itself. I had high expectations and that portion of the tour is somewhat disappointing. We weren't given any lights to see inside the mine either, so unless you had a flashlight, blackberry or cell phone with some light, all you saw was what the tour guide shone her flashlight on. Apparently other tours have received hardhats with the lights on them, but we got jipped in that respect. You must also know that getting to this location is not a simple task. Riding the tour bus up the mountain is very rough, kinda long and may seem sketchy at times because the road is very narrow in places. There is only one place to use the toilet, which is early on in the tour, upon getting off of the bus. You walk on a slight decline (could be somewhat slippy due to loose, small rocks) to arrive at a set of 589 stairs which you descend until you reach the actual mine buildings and mine itself. Wear good shoes. Getting there doesn't seem like such a big deal, but getting back to the bus is. I am in decent shape, but still was a bit of a sweaty mess by the time we were done (mind you, it was a hot and sunny day). We all had to pace ourselves climbing the stairs because it is one heck of a workout on the lungs. No one with any physical challenges should be going on this trip, if you ask me. It's too bad it's not more accessible and wheelchair friendly, but this may improve someday. The views from the mountain where the mine is located are fantastic. Exploring the original mine buildings and learning how the operation worked is interesting. I wouldn't need to take this tour twice, but if you can do it physically, it's a good day trip and you end it with some fun stories and photos.

Yay! a taste of some fresh, 'spring-like' air, and a nice, Okanagan BC wine to savour, before heading back inside, and to the kitchen to prepare dinner. The wine -- a BC Wine Studio signature wine -- Siren's Call '2015 Harmonious' - a Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Some great red varieties, of dark-red fruits, and spice. For me, the blend offered a rich, quite strong, bold, and flavourful taste. And the 'spicy flavour' contribution from the Malbec was definitely there (love it!). I much-enjoyed my first tastes yesterday, and look forward to today's balcony-break and more -- but not to seeing the bottle empty!!

As you travel the once fertile lands of British Columbia committing your best Immortan Joe impression in search of aqua cola and lamenting on the fall of mankind while still yearning for when the planet's fate was dictated by immature jingoistic monsters that brought the world to this point in the first place, you will still find at least one place that will serve wine. Yeah, that was meant to be humorous, and now I want to have a shower. Terravista is a bunker. A beautiful well-crafted bunker. Depending on where the blast the wave hits, it could sweep over the hill and not even jostle the glasses on the table. If the nuclear fire moves up the hill from the opposite direction, Terravista is screwed...as will most likely many people, but I'm focusing on priorities here. The wind foretells such a fate, as even on the day we arrived, glasses were tumbling like lemmings to their fate. The required clarification is that one does not enter Terravista but rather stand at the cusp, with garage doors revealing the vault to the public and the host serving at the border, almost as if assuming some higher echelon of society, royalty offering handouts to the poor. Restating how stunning the location is, I must also stress the view as breathtaking. I have no idea how or why I would've skipped this on my previous wine trip when my girlfriend and I visited 60 wineries in a week. I know we were pressed for time, but even a cursory Google search check claimed this one of the mandatory visits in Naramata. One even declared Terravista the best-looking wineries in the region and one of the best in Canada. It can hold such a title if one embraces a style blending art deco and brutalism. I am one of those, so can agree the assertion is valid. The view alone is worth the visit, and due to the construction above, is unimpeded. If you are a viticulture vacationer desiring locations as much as wine, this is the mandatory spot. However, I should also stress that there is far better wine to be found. Far better. Not only would I not put Terravista in the top three, I fear it may not even break the top ten, sitting somewhere around 11 or 12. This is not to say it's bad--there are 24 other wineries, and some are much worse. I did enjoy the experience but walked away with no bottles. But that didn't make it regrettable, and if taking friends along, would hit up Terravista again in a heartbeat. It's a fantastic location, and I have horrible taste in wine. I need to emphasize that. I love Silver Sage, so feel free to discredit me. But the location is great, and it should be on your list.

We needed a cheap quiet place to stay for a late night drive through. The reason I chose this…read moreplace was because it was the cheapest in the area. When we got there I was pleasantly surprised. There was a friendly family to check us in. They helped us find a place to get some food at 11:00 pm (the 7-11 down the street as this town shuts down early). There was free Wi-Fi and cable in my room. The room was huge, much bigger than the 2 of us needed for 1 night. We had a double and a queen bed. There was a full kitchen and a good sized bathroom. The only real complaint is that I wish the windows had curtains, they had the horizontal blinds but really could have used curtains on top of that. The parking was also a bit cramped and the place is "retro", but I like that feel. Outside there was a pool and a playground as well. Very child friendly. Overall it was a great value for the money. I would stay again anytime.

Their blackened chicken & goat cheese sandwich with the candied jalapeños, pickles (gherkins I believe) and arugula is second to none. My only regret about their sandwich is that I didn't have room for a second one because of their generous portion of both sandwich and crispy delicious fries. I can't say enough about them. It may have been even better than the first time I had it. Like I said, consistent and consistently delicious. Well worth the 80km drive to get to them. Highly, highly recommended!
