My sister and I had lunch at S&S Cafeteria on Tuesday, July 8th. Everyone there, from the servers on the line, to the lady printing up the tab, wait staff, manager & cashier were wonderful! Smiling faces, great sunny attitudes, cutting up with the regulars & each other...it was a great experience. Food was incredible and portions were generous. I would like to mention some names to give these folks recognition... Tara, who tallied up the meal, Jennifer, Carly & Kerrie who were the wait staff, Adrian, who checked us out at the end and Kathy, who was the manager. All these folks were wonderful! read more

Went there at the takeout waiting 8 minutes for somebody to come out and take my order got my order ordered turkey and dressing the turkey was sandwich sliced turkey I could not tell the dressing from the gravy both of them so juicy have a nice and never been disappointed read more

Wow! Squash casserole! You don't know what you don't know! I didn't know I loved squash casserole! Cool spots with a bunch of different sides, but you know what I'm picking!!! Ate here for lunch today with my wife. Disgusting is too kind a description. I got chopped steak (which I didn't want, but everything else under the heating lamps looked worse), mac and cheese, and a twice baked potato. I wasn't expecting this place to be the best restaurant in Greenville, but I thought the food would at least be decent, but it was all very bad. Correction, my yeast roll and my ice water were ok. I was so excited to try this place as it used to be my husband's grandmother's favorite place to have lunch! An iconic restaurant usually doesn't disappoint and this one definitely exceeded my expectations. You walk down a long hall when you enter because sometimes the line is out the door! Order your food by walking along the bar and requesting the dishes you want! There are a ton of dishes to choose from, so it is fun to create your meal! The servers were all very friendly as well! Someone will give you your bill at the end of the line and then you take your trays to your table! A server came by to collect the trays from us so that we could eat with our dishes on the table instead of the tray which was nice! Our waitress also kept our waters topped off and made sure we had everything we needed, providing great service throughout the meal! At the end you pay at the register on the way out. I highly recommend trying this iconic dining establishment. The vibe of it takes you back in time! We also loved our dishes! I recommend any of the steaks or the chefs meal of the day! Reminiscent of a nursing home on a Sunday afternoon, except the food is better ;) ok but seriously, this place is a Southern blast from the past. You line up cafeteria style, quickly pick what you want (quickly, or you will get glares), pay at the counter, and sit down with your food. The place is always jamming, because the food really is very good - especially the hamburger steak! Kids eat free every day of the week (2 kids per adult meal) which is a pretty great deal, since the meat and 2 is only about $8 anyway. My little family group and I had what I thought was a stellar lunch today! I liked everything about this place! On the other hand; my daughter didn't like her food very much at all. Usually we are on the same page about what we eat. She said that her lunch had a peculiar taste. I did consume and enjoyed mine. Granted; this is one of those eating places where the veggies taste like they have been laced with sugar.My two grand boys didn't eat much either.They were too busy stuffing their jello to be worried about anything else! I certainly hope that my daughter isn't coming down with something! She excused herself and the boys! In her absence, I tasted her lunch and it was just like mine! Delicious! The price was right on this restaurant! I purchased four meals and got a great deal! In my own defense; I did let my daughter ( Dr.Jess ) pick out our lunch spot today! -Conveniently; let's Daddy off the hook! Again; I devoured my lunch and half of her's! Staff very friendly. Food selection extensive. I use to love eating here but my mom found a dark brown/black piece of hair (maybe from a mustache/beard) that was baked on top of her apple dumpling. Her smothered pork chop had a lot of grizzle and too much breading. My spaghetti was delicious but it tasted more like the Spanish rice my mom cooked growing up. Exactly like it. Then when I got it home I found what I think was a small bone chip, probably from the meat sauce. The jalapeño cornbread is greasy. Overall, I have enjoyed eating here but not sure I'll go back after this. I will say you get a lot of food for the money. This right here was about $12. Also, I got Turkey and dressing to go which comes with cornbread dressing. The gravy or cornbread dsg, not sure which one, was so salty I couldn't even enjoy it. The cornbread dressing was like mush and was kind of watery. When I say too much salt and mushy, I mean it. It wasn't enjoyable at all. I didn't even eat the Turkey as it smelled funny and I figured it was salty, too. Kind of disappointed in this experience as I have always loved going here. I know the options may haven't been right and I could always get something else next time however the hair baked in was clear enough that my senior mother who doesn't wear prescription glasses could even see it. Its great knowing cafeteria style restaurants are still around. I had to have a mashed potatoes and gravy fix so while driving , i saw an exit sign with this places name and i knew if anyone had gravy it would be them. Strolling thru the line you grab your tray and silverware and pick your fare one by one. You pay after consuming your meal. Its straight forward, nothing fancy and the waitresses who keep your drinks filled are super friendly and on top of it. The food is pretty good. I've experienced tastier cafeteria foods but its not bad and when i need gravy without the flare again, I will return here. read more

I went with my mother to dine at S & S New Year's Eve day. We went around lunch time, it wasn't crowded and the line was short. A variety of different sides, entrees and desserts to choose from. I had chicken tenders, mac and cheese, squash casserole and a green beans and an apple dumpling for dessert. My mother had fried flounder with tarter sauce, friend squash, black eyed peas and for her dessert sweet potato pie. My chicken tenders were tough even though they look delicious in the pictures. The rest of my food was good, except the apple dumplings. It was half an apple with a peeling on it that I felt shouldn't have been on it. Come with me... back to 1975! If you can remember Morrison's or Piccadilly Cafeteria, the S & S will take you back! The first S&S Cafeteria opened in Columbus, Georgia, in 1936. S&S has all the classic cafeteria favorites, salads, extreme desserts, classic entrees... the Southern style vegetables will make a po' boy slap his daddy! So to speak. Many of the items are things you won't normally find in today's restaurant industry. The food quality is pretty good, the service is grandmother style friendly. In fact, you may see lots of grandmothers... and grandfathers... this is a big spot for seniors. You hear some interesting conversations from this crowd! Reminds me of visiting my family, back in the day. You'll also see entire families dining together at the S&S, kids, parents, grandparents. It's that kind of place. My family and I decided to eat here because no other place was open and Covid-19 has shook the world so we got it to go. We've been coming here for years since I was little girl and now I'm 23 years old. Over the years they've changed, and not in a good way. The food doesn't have that same fresh taste it used to have. The service is still amazing everyone who works there is nice. I got the fried chicken dark, with rice and gravy, and mac cheese. The chicken was ok, I've had better. The rice wasn't cooked all the way. And, the mac and cheese had no taste to me. Plus, it made me sick. So i won't be back. A lot of people have negative comments about S & S but we've always had excellent food with the nicest servers, both behind the counter and in the dining room. Food service is typical cafeteria style with a cold area, steam tables and beverage service at the end. Your receipt is tallied and given when you exit the line and you'll pay at the cashier station as you leave the cafeteria. You carry your own tray to your table but there are people to assist if you need help getting your food to your table. There are tables as well as booths and all are comfortable. Dining room servers help remove trays, bring condiments, refill beverages and meet any other needs that may arise. I enjoy the roast beef which is tender and juicy and just the right degree of "rareness." I've also enjoyed the fried chicken and the lemonade chicken. The vegetables are nothing fancy but there is a variety so you can surely find something you'll enjoy. There is always a tray of deviled eggs to add to your plate. And they have CRACKLING CORNBREAD. I KNOW it's not the healthiest choice but the flavor is so wonderful! And the EGG CUSTARD pie! We always have that for dessert. It is delicious and sometimes I wonder if we actually decide to go to S & S just to get the dessert? S & S has recently initiated a loyalty program with a punch card that rewards with a free meal after 7 punches. The only reason for the 4 star is the fact that at a cafeteria, you have to stand in line. But for a quick meal, with lots of variety, in a relatively quiet environment at a reasonable cost, S & S fills the bill. read more

I have not been here since about 1980 and today we decided to go for lunch to the S & S Cafeteria. That is what happens when no-one in our group of five has a solid preference. We intended to have our business meeting here, thinking it would be quite on a Tuesday. The place was jam-packed. It also has not changed in thirty years, they were even playing the Brothers Johnson song, STOMP! from 1980...yes...followed by the one hit wonder "You Know I Can't Dance" also from the late seventies. It even smells the same. Everything is the same. The average age of the diners here is "retired." I had to take a picture because the first sight I had of the food was a dessert dish of cut up squares of electric blue jello. It was bizarre. One reviewer said, "the S & S will take you back!" No kidding. I should have stuck with what cafeteria's do the best, Salisbury steak or meatloaf, but I fell for the "NEW" sign beside the fried oysters. Big mistake there. Salad was good, but a giant dollop of ranch dressing was more than enough, they put it on for you. Green beans from a can...get the picture. I know its a cafeteria but c'mon man. Service was very good, the wait staff was helpful in finding a booth where we could pull up an extra chair. Other entree's chosen by my party were BBQ Chicken, slathered in a jarred BBQ sauce, crab cakes, salmon and Salisbury steak. Everyone said the food was "meh" as in not bad but not bringing me back here either. I stopped at S & S Cafeteria at 1:30 because I was starving and it was the first place I saw. Since I was not familiar with this establishment, I was looking at the various food options. (I made sure I was not holding up the line and there was no one in line after me.) The server who was working the salad area was told to help me and seemed annoyed when I asked some questions about the food since I did not recognize some of the items. There was a good selection of food and what I selected tasted okay. The dining area was clean and there were still numerous patrons eating. A very nice hostess asked if I needed anything shortly after I sat down. I would have given this place more stars but the attitude of the employee was uncalled for and the taste of the food was just okay. read more

Like entering a time machine, possibly the last S&S Cafeteria there is and it was an almost exact duplicate of the one a half mile from my childhood home that I ate at dozens of times in the 1970's. The menu, serving line, cashier, tables, lights, pictures, even the color scheme were all the same. Most importantly so was the food. Fresh salad, pecan pie, chopped steak brown gravy and rice, broccoli cheese and rice, yeast roll and garlic toast was all an identical recipe to what I would have gotten in 1975, and it tasted great. So if you want to take a stroll back in the past and see what a Saturday or Sunday family meal out was like, this is the place. read more

Not your typical 'fresh' food restaurant. While the set up brought me back to Picadilly Restaurant days, the food was less than sub par. The cheese mashed potatoes tasted like chemicals, the green beans tasted like fish oil, and the corn bread was a choking hazard. read more

Being a "carpetbagger" from up north traveling the region, I'm not familiar at all with southern cafeteria-style places. Family in the area recommended I go to at least one cafeteria in my time in the south, and I finally got around to going to the S+S Cafeteria in Greenville. After experiencing S+S, I'm sad there aren't more places like this above the Mason-Dixon line, because I've been missing out on great, cheap comfort food. I've been twice--once for take-out and once for sit-down lunch. For take-out I got chicken and dumplings with mac and cheese and green beans. It was perfectly fine, and the take-out lady was very nice. The green beans were a little soft for my tastes. The mac and cheese was especially good, and the chicken and dumplings were very flavorful, although I would have liked more chicken. My experience sitting down for lunch was far better. I had literally no clue what I was doing, so I just loaded up: chopped steak, cheddar potato, mac and cheese, turnip greens, corn muffin, and coconut cream pie (hey I missed breakfast). It worked out well--I had no idea about the whole "meat and threes" concept, which they call their Great American Meal, so it was only 6.99 for the steak and three of my sides. I got charged for the extra mac and cheese and the pie on top of that as well as a soda, and still my bill was only 12 bucks. That is AMAZING. And the quality overall was much better than my take-out, with the exception of the mac and cheese. The chopped steak was perfectly cooked and the server made sure to spoon a ton of the natural juices on top of it and my potato. I could cut the chopped steak with a fork, and it was so good I didn't need steak sauce. The potato was also great and cheesy. The turnip greens--something I'm relatively new to--were also very good and complimented the meat well. And that corn muffin--man. Crisp and great and i normally don't go for them. People at the tables around me were raving about them. The pie was light and a great dessert, and the servers/staff were very nice and attentive. Only complaint for the second time around was the mac and cheese, because it wasn't terribly cheesy or stuck together well compared to when I got it for takeout. It was just lacking something...can't put my finger on it. Didn't really care though, because of the quality of everything else and the amazing bargain. I'm totally going to go here again before I leave the area. There were many, many options to choose from. The roast , salmon cakes, and fried green tomatoes looked particularly good. If you're an out-of-towner/traveler like myself looking for quick, easy, and quality southern comfort food in the Greenville area but for whatever reason want to avoid parking downtown, this is a great choice. read more

Entering the restaurant I found that overly long pathway never-ending. My hubby remarked "it's like a military chow hall!". I found them pricey and the portions small for what we paid. When we stepped inside the dinning hall I felt as if I transcended in time. From the carpeting to the tables and chairs. Like I was in a 50s horror movie. 5 Stars for the staff.
