Um... this place is amazing…read more I had no idea this store even existed until I randomly decided to go in after browsing around at Eva B, which is pretty much right next door. Looking in from outside, you wouldn't gain much of a clue as to what this place is about since they aren't big on window display. Nope, aesthetics are not on the radar here. Once you go inside, though, you'll be blown away at: a) the actual size of this place and, b) the amount of STUFF. This is an industrial supply store, full of the most obscure tools, parts, etc and has everything -EVERYTHING- you could ever want before you knew you wanted it. I'm a DIY builder (artist) of mechanical, electronics, whatever and I seriously wish I'd found this place a lot sooner. Today I located an extremely hard to come by brass nut that I desperately needed to finish hooking up the latest appliance I'm working on. I had a hallelujah moment so hard, the guys working there thought I was a full-on lunatic. Everything is super cheap, super organized, and well-stocked. I'll be going here FIRST the next time I need parts. Also, all kinds of camping, fishing and other gear, too. Put it on your go-to list.

However, in this digital age, this store is definitely a blow back to the eighties where they require a store bought bill to be presented or NO REFUND, not even a store credit. Producing a credit card receipt is not acceptable. I did not take a receipt because frankly in today's digital, ease of access to information economy who does? The store refused me a small refund because I had no store bought receipt. They pointed to all their signs that expressly stated this. Yes, I did a mistake in not keeping the receipt, but I still was a loyal customer. Nevertheless, policy arising from a truly archaic manual system, outweighs customer satisfaction and I am no longer a loyal customer. Hopefully they will learn from this and invest in some system that provides flexibility in order to satisfy customers.

Luckily HD tells you exactly where it is placed on their site, lo and behold exactly where the site indicated it would be. Reason they truly cancelled my order was to not respect the advertised price that was online, instead Miriam the flooring supervisor wanted to take me for an idiot by offering me a small discount instead of respecting the initial advertised online price as well as the consumer law in Quebec.

Although it has up-scaled a great deal, going from an average neighborhood hardware, to upscale specialty paint/hardware/housewares and gifts it still has the same neighborhood feel and even some of the same staff. Wilder, who works behind the paint counter in the basement, where most of the "serious" hardware is located, has been there ever since I can remember, and always provides one of the best customer service experiences available. He knows his stuff, and is always happy to help. Upstairs, where the gifts and housewares are found, is home to what I can only describe as *the* best selection of gifts for hard to shop for hipsters and grandparents ever... Anyway it seems Montreal doesn't have a lot of places that sells that but saw online that Hogg hardware does since it's part of the Home Hardware group. Went in, ordered it, got a call 2 days later to pick and it wasn't expensive at all. The guys are also really nice but while I was waiting around I saw a ton of cool stuff for the home including soy candles, funky door handles and coat hooks, and stuff you'll never see at Home Depot. I used to buy soy candles at Winners (since soy doesn't produce soot and burns cleanly), but increasingly they don't carry them anymore and instead have "hand-poured" candles ( what the hell is that supposed to mean if it doesn't change the fact that it produces soot?) but now at least I can get some here at a reasonable price. There's a reason why it's located in Westmount and also Nun's Island, it's definitely more bourgeoisie and less blue-collar.

One time I was buying metal files and they opened a drawer with more files than I have ever seen in my life. 2: HARDWARE: in the basement they have one of the few remaining hardware counters in town, where you can walk up and ask for a dozen 4-40 stainless cap screws. They have good advice too. (Good prices but Harsupco is better in terms of variety and price.) 3: METALS: in the very back of the basement, they have aluminum, steel, brass and stainless metals in rods, angle, square bars that you can buy by the foot. Their price beats Home Depot by a long shot. They've got the usual things like paint and tape and power tools, but it's the three things above that make it very unique...
