Save your time, guys. Read this…read more I've reached out to 20 solar contractors to cover my whole roof with solar panels, connect 4 Tesla Power Wall 3 batteries and go off grid. I had that well-known feeling, like you're dealing with used car dealerships. The salesmen lied right in my face countless times just to get the contract. I was quite disappointed with a few contractors with flashy websites. Damon's offer was the best in terms of price/quality. He didn't send any salesmen to my house, because he shows up himself. I wish I didn't have to waste my time on talking to everybody else. He showed up as promised. There were no hidden extra fees. No broken deadlines. It all went smooth. Our solar system perfectly resisted the outage which lasted for 6 hours in January 2025.

Back in September 2023 reported issue of Tesla Powerwall+ not working correctly…read more The issue is during daylight hours the battery will switch over to standby mode where we do not have use of energy until dark (about 6pm) For instance if we charge car or use dryer during the day solar energy may only provide 50% of energy needed it should pull remaining energy needed from battery but instead it pulls from the grid. This is when the battery is at 100%. Two separate occasions Sep-Dec 2023 Haleakala Solar came out and attempted repairs. Throughout this time I reported approximately 20 to 30 emails with screenshots documenting issue and that issue was still occurring I contacted battery bonus program to see if this could be an issue. And also to cancel the installation of program since Haleakala Solar never provided HECO proper documentation for HECO to validate data.. I had to fill out a form send it in to get this program canceled since Haleakala Solar wouldn't. In December President Jim Whitcomb during phone call even admitted that Haleakala failed on their part getting the battery bonus program working and lack of service he assured me they would get it working. I asked Haleakala Solar several times could this issue be related to Battery program that was never successfully hooked up and I was assuring no. Contacted Tesla after several long 15 to 20 minute phone calls with them plus numerous emails documenting issue back and forth. As of early December it's in Tesla Tier two tech support and their recommendation December 24, 2023 was "Further your advanced settings need to be changed to export everything as opposed to solar only. Please go to settings, powerwall scroll down to advanced settings, permission to export to change the setting. Which I emailed to Haleakala Solar and they never came out to try. In late December conference call with Jim Whitcomb president and Mokihana Techical Lead at Haleakala Solar sent him screenshots of issue. Mokihana guessed it was low internet signal and they were to install a booster. I sent him Tesla's recommendation. They never came out to try either fix. From December to Feb to sent emails to Haleakala Solar documenting issue still occurring. And my new strategy was to find another solar company and bill Haleakala for its repair. Several companies didn't want to get involved in another's mess. 2/14/24 Filed BBB complaint which they said responded "We are working on finding a solution to what is happening with the battery at Mr. Taylors house. I will contact out head electrician and the owner and see when the soonest we can get out there will be. " 2/23/24 Filed compliant with State of Hawaii DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AND CONSUMER AFFAIRS 3/1/24 Sent Haleakala Solar a registered letter including a demand to repair within 14 days or face legal action for breach of warranty. Needless to say I'm sure when this is resolved I will never get any help from Haleakala Solar on any warranty service. Its worth it though letting everyone know our experience with Haleakala Solar's unbelievably poor service.

Background: There was an existing 35-year-old 'SolaHart' brand solar hot water heater on my Oahu…read morehome roof and it worked perfectly although it was older. Then I noticed it was slowly leaking. My trusted plumber had a look and it was the solar unit leaking and not the plumbing. It needed to be replaced. A split solar hot water heater would be $12k to 14k. Sun King: So a google search told me that Maui based 'Sun King' was the 'SolaHart' company in Hawaii. I gave them a call. They even had the records on the old unit. A new replacement SolaHart unit would be about $9k installed. So I received a quote and all the information about payment, installation scheduling, coordination with my roofing company as the roof needed replacement first. Like any solar system there is a time delay in installation due to ordering and scheduling. It is not like replacing a standard home hot water heater. But it's leaking now: Well these guys deal with this all the time. So they sent over Paul to assess the situation first hand and install a temporary electric hot water heater and disconnect the leaking unit. That didn't work out, but everything else was planned out and installation scheduled for about a month later after the roof was completed. The catch was that there would be no hot water for about a week while the roof work was ongoing. The old unit would have to be removed while the roof was replaced...so no hot water. Anyway eventually Paul and his experienced crew of plumbers, electricians and installers found a way to hook up and wire the temporary heater. It saved us from a week of cold showers. Yes!!! Satisfaction: 5 Stars. While home repairs, remodeling, renovation, on older homes don't always go smoothly. Everything worked out in the end. Bumps in the road may happen but it is their ability to deal with imperfect situations that are the key. Personally, I favor the simple SolaHart type of passive system (vs. the split system) because of the price and reliability. Remember the first one lasted 35 years. Google SolaHart for information. Check their website to see all that they have to offer. They do photovoltaic systems and more: https://www.sunkinghawaii.com/ The installation on top of the new roof was done with care and precision. It was bolted securely to the wood rafters. Maui Headquarters and Tax credits: Despite being headquartered on Maui they do travel to other islands. They had their own crew and truck plus 2 other trucks showed up. Somehow they had the ability to provide full services on Oahu. The office also assisted in providing information on tax credits. Very helpful because this clearly lowers the actual cost. Lyn from the front office, Paul, and each and every technician that I encountered was professional and pleasant.

Rama Covarrubias was one of the bright spots for me and my family after the Kona low storms!…read more We suffered roof and interior damage and one of the roofing companies had him call us directly. At that time, we had not made a decision about who was going to replace our roof. He was one of the very first people to call and offer help with my 26 panels. We chose our roofer and SunRun came out to remove our panels. All was good, or so we thought. The roofers indicated there were two remaining panels we forgot about. These panels were on the house since the original build. The roofer suggested that I call Rama since they had worked closely before and he was a trusted electrician. Within 48 hours, Rama had made it to my house to squeeze us in and remove those two panels! Without him, our roof progress was stilted. Rama was fast, professional, quick, and very pleasant. He took the stress out of the situation and even did the reinstall within one week of removing them! We are still waiting for Sunrun to complete the rest of their work with the remaining 26 panels. I would absolutely call Rama again to fix any panel problems! Mahalo so much, Rama!!!

Again, an absolute pleasure to work with, delivers more than he promises on time and for a great price. 3) Today, Rama came to replace the old 2nd hot water panel that was leaking badly. He and his team went up on the roof, poked around for 10 minutes and came down to say that the leak was actually from a copper feeder pipe that had corroded over the years and was leaking into the panel. An hour later he turned the system back on. There were no leaks and hot water was restored. He charged me only for his time and parts. He saved me a few thousand dollars. By the way, his bid for the original work was the lowest by far and he was able to get to the job faster than his competition. I really can't give Rama a better recommendation. He's the best vendor I've ever worked with in my 74 years.
