The roll choices I felt were limited. The complimentary dessert was also awful. The shrimp tempura tasted and looked like it was from a Trader Joe's package at a 100% market up. We came in for an early dinner at around 4:30p. The restaurant had just opened so we were the only customers besides a few to-go orders. The restaurant is quite small and parking is limited. We ordered the super salmon sampler, toro sampler, Ryoshin roll, and the super lion king roll. Both the salmon and toro sampler were excellent- delicately flavorful fish served with fresh wasabi. Although the portions were on the smaller side, the quality does make up for it. If you're deciding between the two, I'd go with the salmon sampler. The Ryoshin roll was a bit too "saucey" but again the fish was fresh and we still devoured it, just wouldn't order again. I'd also skip the lion king roll, the scallop was tough and the roll lacked the baked warmth I was expecting. Overall our meal was enjoyable but I wouldn't consider this a "bang for your buck" type of restaurant. This was a cute little spot in Belmont with a large selection of sushi rolls, nigiri/sashimi, and hot dishes. We both ordered the 12-piece nigiri omakase to start. The selection of fish was high quality and each piece was already seasoned so that you do not need to dip it into soy sauce. For $70 and the guaranteed inclusion of uni, we found it to be a good deal. Afterward, we ordered a few additional pieces of nigiri as well as a sushi taco. The sushi taco was a handroll with the nori dipped in tempura batter and fried. It was tasty and different. Kudos to them for the concept! This is a small operation with only 14 seats and only a few people working. They did well to keep up with the service. It's not fast service, but it's alright too. Parking is limited to street parking, so you may need to hunt around for a spot if it's busy. THEY ACCOMMODATE FOR GLUTEN ALLERGIES! My choices at sushi restaurants are generally pretty limited, so it was such a wonderful surprise to be able to eat sushi that wasn't just sashimi. They informed me how my dishes would be accommodated, and brought tamari to the table as well! So so incredible; I truly cannot express my delight knowing there's a place with so many more delicious and safe options. My partner and I ordered the Super Salmon Tasting and Toro Tasting to share (adjusted for gluten allergy), as well as an R.Y. Roll for him. We were walked through what each type of fish was in both tastings, all of which were wonderful to try and experience. My partner loved his roll as well! For a small unassuming spot, I didn't have many expectations going in, so I was absolutely blown away by the quality of it all! The fish was so fresh -- nothing smelled or tasted too fishy, the fatty pieces still ate very cleanly, and the pieces were cut and plated beautifully without being overwhelming. This place did not disappoint me. We made reservations for dinner and parking was so easy. We knew exactly what we wanted. The Omakase! The place is actually pretty small. I didn't know it was that small which i felt we can hear all the other conversations in the other tables. Let me start the order of the first 4 nigiris, each set of nigiris came out on a different plate. I liked the plates as they looked really pretty. The first set had the kanpachi-Japan, Kurodai- Europe, iwana-Canada, and hirame kombuijme(flounder-Korea). These first 4 literally melted in my mouth esp the Iwana! You can never go wrong with Kanpachi and kurodai, it lived up to it's standards. The next four that came out were the Hamachi Toro-(Canada), Umi Masu- (Scotland), Madai-(Japan) and Shima Aji (Japan). These four were just as amazing! Out of these four my favorite was the Madai. It was marinated very well. The flavors combo was so good. To my surprise the next dishes that came out had uni! Uni (Japan), something i can't remember, Hotate, Zuke sake Toro (Canada). Based on these nigiris you know you hit the jackpot. Of course my favorite was the uni, followed by the hotate, and Zuke Sake Toro and finally the something i can't remember. The final five had what I think is a tuna fish, Chu toro, King sake Toro, hamachi toro and sake toro. These were all so good, the sake toro was my favorite. In addition, we ordered the Uni Hotate and the Engawa. These two i can eat every single day. The Engawa, literally melted in my mouth. I wish i didn't have to share the two pieces. Since friends recommended it, we meant to try this small sushi bar for a long time and it didn't disappoint. This is a really small place with maybe six tables or so. They also have some outdoor seating alongside the building's front. So make a reservation, order out, or time your visit well. We chose a dish from the seasonal rolls, the fusion rolls, and handrolls. Everything was fresh and with distinct wonderful flavors (and not drowned out by flavored mayo, sesame oil etc). You pay for good quality dishes - although I think nothing we had was overpriced. Don't underestimate this tiny neighborhood sushi restaurant. The quality is actually pretty good and exceeded my expectations. The space itself is very small. They can seat 14 people inside (there was 1 4-top table and 5 2-tops). There's a couple tables outside for outdoor dining as well. I was really intrigued by the pressed sushi (oshizushi). It's not something you see at typical sushi restaurants. My only gripe is that the sushi rice kinda fell apart -not sure if that's normal? I think staff knew because they served that dish with a fork. We opted for the hokkaido scallop ($18.70 for 7 pieces). We also ordered the crazy roll ($18.90) - good, but nothing memorable, and quite a bit of nigiri. We decided to try the king sake/king salmon ($11), ikura/fish roe ($9), hotate/scallop ($7.70), hamachi toro/yellowtail belly ($12), and uni hotate ($16). Most pieces came seared, but everything tasted fresh. The ikura nigiri was much smaller in size than expected. Also, I would just stick to hokkaido uni instead of the uni hotate combo in the future because the uni was of lesser quality. Overall, had a pleasant experience. At the end of the meal, you also get a small complimentary mango pudding. Such a nice touch! Ordered on a Thursday night for scheduled takeout. There was a good amount of parking outside. I got a lion king roll, a ryoshin roll, a summer roll, a juicy roll, and a hokkaido scallop oshizushi. Everything was amazing and fresh and just melted in your mouth. I should've looked closer at the menu though because three of the rolls were basically a variation on a california roll. The lion king was rich. It just broke in my mouth. Because it's covered by tin foil, it stayed warm during the drive home. Ryoshin roll had a good kick to it. It was rich as well. Fish was super fresh. Juicy roll was good too. It was kind of like the ryoshin roll but with less spice. Summer roll was light and refreshing. Perfect if you don't want to be overly stuffed. The hokkaido scalllop oshizushi was my favorite. The scallop just melted once you put it in your mouth. It was so satisfying. I'd definitely come back for sushi. The takeout was amazing. There's so many items to choose from this small place which looks there was only a few small tables pre COVID. I did takeout and the phone ordering was easy and my order was ready very quickly for pickup. The fish here is very tasty and fresh. If you want high quality fish at a reasonable price, this is the place to go in San Mateo. They also have wooden press non seaweed oshizushi which I tried for the first time. This is what we ordered and liked them all: Unagi oshizushi Ebi oshizushi 6 pieces super salmon tasting 5 pieces toro tasting Matcha Mille-crepes cake Original Mille-crepes cake The Mille crepes cakes were deelish! Ive only gone here for dinner and its busy but not packed. Its a great hidden sushi gem and we love going here for their great tasting sushi as well as the friendly service. I gave Ryoshin another chance. I still stand by my "Oh My God, the portions are tiny" sentiment. But the food is really good. What stood about about the good: 1) presentation beautiful 2) rice well done with good acid-sweet balance and texture 3) fresh fish 4) excellent selection of fish-forward rolls that don't rely solely on crab salad, mayo, fried/tempora, cream cheese. They actually rely on quality authentic ingredients to excite you, not fat. Drilling in more... Small Portions/High prices: My daughter and I ordered to go last night, we spent $92 in total before tip and were still hungry after, I had to make her pasta. And she's a skinny thing that never eats so the fact that $50 of sushi left her hungry is saying something. The nigiri in particular are like little mini drops of sunshine. You get the about 1 tsp of rice with about 1/3 the portion of fish you'd expect anyplace else. That 1/3 ratio pretty much works throughout the entire menu. Order 2-3 times more than you think you should, else you'll be left hungry. Fish Quality and Choice: I loved the fresh and quality of the fish. They had 3-4 different kinds of toro and 5 different kinds of salmon on the menu for nigiri. OMG. We got the regular salmon nigiri and salmon toro. Both were different in flavor then I've had at other places but really yummy and succulent with good texture. Tiny ofc. I don't know how this place manages to keep so much fresh fish on hand, such a selection! Roll Deliciousness: We ordered the Fire tuna oshizushi and salmon and scallop oshizushi and my life was altered. These are the single most delicious things I've ever tasted. I would the fire tune every day if I could. Please try the Oshizushi, Wow. We also had the Ryoshin roll and I loved how the kimche and unagi sauces were subtle but additive. That is what Ryoshin is great at. Also enjoyed the mix of flavors in the Seared fire roll. Anyway, in summary, buy at least 2x what you think you will eat and you'll be happy. Expect to pay too much but not regret it. Tip to saving money: the standard roles (salmon roll, cucumber avocado, spicy tune, etc) are reasonably priced and sized.
