Wind Turbine Power! [like being in a 75-90 MPH Wind Tunnel on this stretch of I-90!]

Rest Stop Smack In-Da-Middle Of A Wind Farm! SITREP Man O' Man! Button Up! Zip Up! Tuck your loose ends IN, cause even the walk from the car to the bathrooms is like walking through a 75-90 MPH Wind Tunnel! THE SETUP The Ryegrass Rest Area ("Ryegrass") is a most welcome rest stop pretty much in the middle of nowhere! On our trek from Seattle, we go through the mountain pass and hit the plains for more than a hundred miles. There isn't much to stop for in the interim until we make Spokane still hours ahead of us. AMENITIES Ryegrass is a very nice, modern rest stop facility with clean bathrooms and a very adequate vending service full of a wide array of both munchies, sodas, waters and the like. They even have energy drinks and ice cream and a very reasonable cost lower than most convenience stores. WILD HORSE WIND FARM The corporate sponsor of this area is the Wild Horse Wind Farm. Not only did their funds create this rest stop in the middle of their wind farm, but it's pretty cool to realize - especially when driving to this stop at night - that everything that is powered by electricity at this rest stop - the lights, the vending machines, the charging stations, etc. - all comes from the wind turbines spinning like maniacs nearby. Thank you Wild Horse! THE LOWDOWN Schedule in this stop when racing across the top of the country on I-90! You won't regret it.

There is something about Rye Grass that I like but I'm not sure what it is. Perhaps it's the elevation and the scenery. Recommended.

Ask the Community - Ryegrass Rest Area

Is it safe to sleep in your car here during the night?

I've never slept there but it is well lit and the State Patrol comes though often so I'd say it is safe.

However this is beautifully set right off I-90 in the desert in a windy area surrounded by mountains and wind turbines.

The rest stop on I-90 going Eastbound has a huge grassy lawn which is great for if you want to walk around while you are here. There is a restroom building and a small building for coffee when operating. The bathrooms have been clean in my experience and the lawn well maintained. There is a long strip of parking for vehicles other than those with trailers and large trucks. This means one may have to walk a little ways to get to the restroom building if you have to park at the end of the parking strip. The Westbound rest stop has a smaller grassy lawn and a restroom building. The restrooms here are also well maintained. The coffee area is a small walled in area located under the same roof as the restroom building, just not attached by wall to the restrooms. When I stopped at the Westbound rest stop most recently, the 29th of June 2020, it was super windy. Make sure to have your car keys when you step out of the car. The wind slammed my door shut before I was ready to close it. Also, I found the wind to be so strong as to jolt my car sideways in this stretch of highway. Both rest stops have signage providing context for the highway you are driving along to reach the rest area (I-90 also called the Blue Star Memorial Highway). Maps of the different rest areas along I-90 and of the geographical features along I-90 are posted at both rest areas. Some historical context is also provided in regards to the naming of the rest area. An enjoyable place to explore and learn a little bit about the area and transportation routes one is using while stopped to rest, walk around, and/or use the restroom.

I had read up on the Hanford Reach National Monument in advance and knew there weren't facilities on site so I needed to find an alternative. As I was about to reach the national monument I found this rest area. The rest area is clearly marked along the highway heading north/eastbound so I knew it was coming up and it was easy to spot and turn in from Highway 24. There is a designated pet area that I explored and found has an excellent view of a rocky landscape in the distance. A handful of different birds were poking around on the ground and flitting about tree-to-tree as I explored the pet area and the grassy area. The grassy area around the restroom building is large and a great place to roam around. Abundant picnic tables sprinkle the lawn. Restrooms were clean and safety measures for COVID-19 were communicated in posted notices. Vernita Bridge which crosses the Columbia River is also visible from the rest area. Its yellow metal arches/frame beckoning to get closer and scope the bridge out.

I definitely feel whomever has to maintain this rest stop should get hazard pay if they don't already. Being in the off-season, I could see how the grounds weren't manicured and the picnic table area was overgrown. There were a few semi trucks in the lot, and a few cars came through to use the facilities when we were there so it seems busy enough. The view seems like it would be breathtaking on a clear day.
