We purchased a Labrador puppy from Kathryn/Ryckman Kennels in March 2022. Upon pick up we noticed discharge from her vulva. The Veterinarian told us it was from puppy vaginitis and it would resolve on its own. When it didn't resolve, the vet started her on a round of antibiotics. When that didn't resolve, they did a culture and sensitivity and that came back as Pseudomonas and Staph that were both resistant to several antibiotics. The vet chose 2 different antibiotics and she was on them for about 3.5 weeks. After minimal improvement, she then went back to the vet for a sedated vaginal exam. Side note: At the time of the culture, we had already spent over $700 on vet bills and when I reached out to Kathryn to see if any of this was covered in the puppy guarantee, she said no. She only guarantees hips and eyes. The kicker is, she never submitted our AKC paperwork until early June (we purchased our pup in March) which should have come with one month free of pet insurance. When I mentioned that to her, she did not reply to me. When I tried to apply for pet insurance for our puppy, they told me all of this would be considered a pre-existing condition and would not be covered under pet insurance. Back to the pup... Upon her vaginal exam, she had a thick vaginal stricture. The vet stated it was really swollen and almost closed up, but she manually stretched it and said to recheck in one week and to continue antibiotics and pain meds. The vet did some research (to double check) and let me know vaginal strictures are congenital defects and hereditary. I contacted Kathryn again to discuss next steps when she still wasn't better and she asked me if I wanted to return her and get a new puppy. I told her that's not how it worked in our house- we love her and she's our dog for life. I would not recommend this breeder to anyone. We paid $2800 for a puppy that came with congenital defects that are hereditary and the breeder didn't offer any kind of assistance. She claims to have the best puppies and is very proud of them, but hasn't offered any assistance towards these congenital issues. She was also tardy in submitting our AKC paperwork and each time we visited Ryckman Kennels, it was chaotic. We love our girl and wouldn't trade her for anything, but this has been a very bad experience for our girl and for our family. read more

I bought Letty Lou from him almost nine years ago, and took her back at 7 months old for pointer training. She was so birdy after one month she seemed to not know me. She just want to find birds and smell feathers. After 2 months she came home and was again a member of the family. My new GSP is going there real soon. read more

We had the "untrainable" dog as far as I was concerned. He was very sweet and smart, but the dang thing had more energy than anything I'd ever seen. I've always been good with training my dogs on the basic things, and to just behave, but this one was different. After calling everywhere within about 200 miles and inquiring about their "bootcamp" type training, a friend recommended Buck Ryckman to me, saying he trained his hunting dogs for him. After speaking to Buck, I found that in addition to coming highly recommended, he was also very affordable. Most dogs take a few weeks. Mine took over a month. Same price. When I got him back, he still had a ton of energy, but he listens. When I call him, he comes immediately. When I say drop, he drops. Walks pretty well off leash. I got a different dog back. I cannot recommend Buck Ryckman highly enough. read more

If I could give a zero I would. It's been several years but my anger has not dissipated and when I heard someone recommend them I felt the need to post my experience. We boarded our 7 lb miniature dauchsund with them for a week. When we picked her up she was skin and bones. They said she was scared and they couldn't get her to eat. That was not her normal personality! We noticed she cried when we pet get so we took her to a vet. When we were telling him her symptoms he said oh yes I remember her, did you board her at Ryckman? We were shocked since they never mentioned anything. It was the vet who told us she ran under the chain link fence when she was let out so they could clean her kennel and the worker grabbed her by her back legs and yanked her back. She had a very deep bruise running down her spine from neck to tail. Her fur and skin came off and never grew back leaving her with a huge scar. When I contacted Ryckman they finally confessed but refused to pay for her follow up treatment. I wouldn't trust my worst enemy in their care. read more

We have a Belgium Malanois. 8 months old. He could sit when he went to Ryckman Kennals for board and train, 6 weeks later we returned to pick the dog up. They said he might not be completely polished and may need to come back for a week. We took dog home---basically, he still knew sit and nothing else. He learned zero. We were supposed to take dog back for 'brush up' but thought, whats the point? He learned to sit, which, my wife already taught him before he went. Mr. Ryckman is very proud of his bird dog training which may be excellent-he showed me some hunt dogs there for training, which responded well to the fetch command. He uses live birds so the dogs understand not to chomp them. His daughter showed me her dogs also, which could basically run a fortune 500 company they are so well mannered. I think one of them was was mowing the lawn when I was there last. Even so, our dog knew nothing more than what he went with. Also, Mr. Riyckman does not respond to texts or phone calls in a timely fashion and I cannot recommend him for behavioral training. 1200 bucks down the tubes. I dont want to say it is entirely his fault the dog did not improve, the dog is stubborn, but still, my wife taught him to sit and she's like Grandma sugar cookies and is not a stringent disciplinarian. She trained him with treats, which, Mr. Ryckman says does not work. We paid half on drop off-I would have not paid the balance on pick up if I had known the dog had not improved. read more

I dropped off our two 16 month old Chocolate Labs on June 28, 2018, both in impeccable condition. Our male lab weighed 97 lbs and our female weighed 87 lbs, both were extremely spoiled and in need of some proper training. Prior to their drop off, Kathryn was extremely responsive when my wife was working on drop off details, but when we dropped them off it was chaotic and very rushed. Neither of the owners offered any details, or even offered to show the facilities to us. They took our dogs, placed them in a kennel and bid us farewell. My wife and daughter were concerned from the start as to the cleanliness of the facility, but I tried to convince them they would be ok. After a couple of weeks, my wife messaged Kathryn and she replied they were doing good and were ok. My wife asked for pictures or videos ... none. This went on a couple more weeks, when finally I got involved and messaged Kathryn and Don myself. My wife wanted to pay a surprise visit as she felt it odd that the communication was minimal and the lack of pics or details was questionable and she had a very uneasy feeling as to their welfare. Finally, Kathryn copied and messaged my wife her original message as to the protocol of their training ... to remind my wife what the original message entailed. She promised pics or video again, but none. After that and me getting involved, we finally got a video of our girl, but not our boy. A week later I received one of Sig. Although the video showed the training it was hard to see their condition. It wasn't until we arrived at the 7th week for our visit that we saw our dogs. My wife mentioned Kimber looked thin, but Don didn't seem to think so. She seemed a little intimidated, but worked well with the training and common commands given. Sig looked better, but was also a bit thinner, and he too worked well with common commands. Kimber had a small place on top her nose that was healing and Sig had a small tear on his ear that was healing, and there was no explanation as to what it was from. The dogs smelled obviously liked outside kennel dogs (which we were not use to since they were house dogs). Against my wife's request we left the dogs there another week to finish training. After all, we paid $1,400 per dog for this 8 weeks of training. My daughter and I returned the following Saturday to pick our brown babies up. When we arrived Don was bathing them. He went over some working details with us and gave us direction for the coming days as to keeping them in routine for training. We got our dogs and returned them home. Kimber looked very thin and very broken in her spirit. Sig appeared a bit thin, and not quite himself. Sunday morning we woke up and noticed Kimber was scratching her ear and upon pulling her ear back we noticed she had a tick in her ear. Then after further inspection, we discovered she was infested in ticks. We called our daughter to inform her to inspect Sig and she did, and he too was totally infested in ticks. I sent a text to Don and the only comment was "Sorry, I did see one on Kimber's back and pulled it off, but didn't think to look all over her" that was it. We had to get oral meds from our Vet for them to take to kill the ticks, and after weighing them both we discovered Kimber was down almost 15 pounds and Sig 11. How can a kennel not be held to cleanliness standards when boarding animals? When you take your pets for training or boarding in great condition and they return less than what they were when dropped off, and all you get is sorry? I guess the training was ok, I wouldn't say $1,400 a dog worth, but they do better on a leash than before, but for the money we paid and the condition of our dogs when we got them back ... we feel like what we put our dogs through and the conditions of uncleanliness and tick infestation was abuse. Our hearts break for their care for the past 8 weeks, and had we of known ... we would have kept the rowdy, care free Labs we had. No animal should be subjected to poor care. Yes our dogs lead better on walks and command, but please be careful when you take your animals here for boarding, the kennels are dirty and your animals most likely will return with ticks. I only rate them with one star because they do lead better than before. But for any other rating as to cleanliness and pet care ... horrible. read more

I couldn't be any happier with the training and boarding that Ryckman Kennels has done for my dogs. I have had all my dogs trained there since I was young and every dog has turned out amazing! My own yellow lab had gotten trained there almost 2 years ago and he turned out amazing. I take him places and he is never on a leash and never leaves my side with his snout never passing my thigh. His retrieving capabilities are impeccable, always listening and retrieving birds like no other. Buck Ryckman has been training dogs for almost 40 years and has had the kennels for a little over 30, knowing that he has much experience. They ask you to provide shot records and some some sort of flea and tick medicine for you to bring to prevent fleas and ticks, so if that isn't brought then that is on YOU. The dog has the ability to go inside and outside at its pleasure, and they provide free baths when it comes to training with them! Every time I go the staff is always very kind and helpful, assisting the pictures, videos, and status of your dog in order to communicate with the owner and speed up the dogs training. The prices at Ryckman Kennels are very reasonable for your dog training. I will continue to go back to Ryckman Kennels and get all my dogs trained there, and recommend them to everyone that wants dog training. read more
