Because of my travel, we're used to marriotts, but we love doing these out of the way places too…read more This one was tops. The location is great. Dead quiet at night. We cooked dinner over a campfire one night, right behind the cabin. Their spot on the lake is excellent. You're 2 minutes from Lake Superior by car, and there's a very convenient little grocery store just down the road. The cabin itself was perfect. Everything you'd need to cook your own meals with a full kitchen. It was colder and wetter than the weathermen said it would be, so it was nice to come back and start up the gas fireplace most nights. Plenty of room between the cabins. There's no air conditioning, so not sure how it would be in summer. The beds were better than we've experienced in various cabins we've rented before. Cable TV, nice (small) living room. The floor in the kitchen sloped, which was kinda funny, but no big deal. The cabins look old on the outside but have clearly been redone completely. Very comfortable. Munising is a a few minutes down the road. The Laknenenland sculpture park is also pretty close, it's free, and it's amazing. A scenic overlook on Superior is also just a couple minutes away. They supplied various things (cooking oil, condiments, etc.) in the kitchen. We made use of the laundry onsite more than expected because we kept getting soaked on our hikes. Various waterfalls and beaches and other sights are all in reasonable distance. Several great places to eat are anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes away. We did a half-our-plus ride to Marquette one day. Definitely we'd return to this little gem. The people who run the place are also wonderful. Highly recommend.

Northwoods Resort is a great place to stay on the UP! It's a family owned business with a welcoming…read moreand knowledgeable staff. It's nestled on the shores of Lake Au Train, which is much warmer than Lake Superior but puts you close enough to explore all the best of the UP & Lake Superior cruises. Each cabin has a fire pit and grill, you can buy wood on site, and many of the cabins have been completely remodeled to include both charm and amenities (AC, tv with streaming options etc). The resort itself is small and would be a great place for a family reunion. There are plenty of boating options and the sand family that owns the resorts also owns a business up there road renting kayaks and canoes. There is a convenience store and pizza place within walking distance and the Pictured Rocks and downtown Munising are just a short drive away. We loved our visit and we'll definitely be back!

We stayed here for a week over Labor Day and had a most wonderful visit. The owner is very nice…read moreand also extremely knowledgeable in regards to the surrounding area - at check in he let us borrow several books about the Porcupine Mountains, Ontonagon County, waterfalls, etc, which was helpful since it was our first visit to the UP. We stayed in the motel portion (there are 7 rooms together on one side of the property as the 'motel' and several cabins on the property are also available. Room 7 faces the lake and is the room to get! The resort is located on the lake and there are firepits, grills, wood, and kayaks that guests can use (for free.) The rooms are basic but clean, which in my opinion is the most important thing. The motel rooms have a refrigerator, microwave, cable, and free wi-fi access. The mini fridge was large enough that we were able to store most of our food, comfortably, that we had planned on grilling and cooking for the week. The fridge also has a small but functional freezer. The rooms and cabins are next to each other, so if you're looking to be miles away from other people this wouldn't be the place for you. But having said that, sharing the beach front, grills, firepits, we felt that we had adequate privacy, and over the course of the stay we met some really nice guests. The beach front was gorgeous and guests can walk the lakefront in both directions for miles (although a few spots you'll need to wade across spots where the Big and Little Cranberry rivers run thru) so bring your beach shoes. Oh, did I mention that it's pet friendly! Yeah, what more can you ask? Superior Shores, while not being luxurious, is clean with many amenities (lakefront, grills, firepits, kayaks, close to Porkies/waterfalls/Lake Gogebic). Superior Shores is a great place to stay, and be sure to ask for Room 7 if you're staying in the motel. Also, be sure to get some local pasties in Ontonagon.

Very clean and well ran. Kayaks for people to use and fire pit. Close to lakes of the clouds and…read moreadventure mine! We stayed in Cabin 8 which was perfect for the 5 of us.
