Northwoods Resort is a great place to stay on the UP! It's a family owned business with a welcoming and knowledgeable staff. It's nestled on the shores of Lake Au Train, which is much warmer than Lake Superior but puts you close enough to explore all the best of the UP & Lake Superior cruises. Each cabin has a fire pit and grill, you can buy wood on site, and many of the cabins have been completely remodeled to include both charm and amenities (AC, tv with streaming options etc). The resort itself is small and would be a great place for a family reunion. There are plenty of boating options and the sand family that owns the resorts also owns a business up there road renting kayaks and canoes. There is a convenience store and pizza place within walking distance and the Pictured Rocks and downtown Munising are just a short drive away. Wow! We rented a couple kayaks from Northwoods Resort to float the beautiful Au Train River from bridge to bridge, as they call it. Reservations were by phone and I received a confirmation email with instructions on where to meet. The young man who checked us in was friendly and helpful. We walked the 1/3 mile up the road to the put-in, though the resort offers a free shuttle as well. The river is glorious: a 7-mile easy float through mostly uninhabited areas in the U.P., with clear water, towering pines, sand beaches, and wildlife. The ducks are very friendly and will approach looking for handouts. We enjoyed our 2+ hours on the river and will definitely be back. read more

Because of my travel, we're used to marriotts, but we love doing these out of the way places too. This one was tops. The location is great. Dead quiet at night. We cooked dinner over a campfire one night, right behind the cabin. Their spot on the lake is excellent. You're 2 minutes from Lake Superior by car, and there's a very convenient little grocery store just down the road. The cabin itself was perfect. Everything you'd need to cook your own meals with a full kitchen. It was colder and wetter than the weathermen said it would be, so it was nice to come back and start up the gas fireplace most nights. Plenty of room between the cabins. There's no air conditioning, so not sure how it would be in summer. The beds were better than we've experienced in various cabins we've rented before. Cable TV, nice (small) living room. The floor in the kitchen sloped, which was kinda funny, but no big deal. The cabins look old on the outside but have clearly been redone completely. Very comfortable. Munising is a a few minutes down the road. The Laknenenland sculpture park is also pretty close, it's free, and it's amazing. A scenic overlook on Superior is also just a couple minutes away. They supplied various things (cooking oil, condiments, etc.) in the kitchen. We made use of the laundry onsite more than expected because we kept getting soaked on our hikes. Various waterfalls and beaches and other sights are all in reasonable distance. Several great places to eat are anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes away. We did a half-our-plus ride to Marquette one day. Definitely we'd return to this little gem. The people who run the place are also wonderful. Highly recommend. read more

Year after year we come back to this little gem. The owners take pride in the resort. They make building improvements and renovations. We feel like members of an extended family. The staff is always friendly and willing to interact and help if needed. The cabins are clean and decorated in a woodsy cabin motif. Highly recommend. read more

This resort has a dozen or more small cottages and cabins for rent; a few are right on Au Train Lake, the others just across a small road. The cabins are really in decent shape, very clean, newer shower and appliances. Had cable TV, free wi-fi, a gas stove, decent kitchen and an awesome view of the lake. They even accept pets, ours do not like other dogs, accidentally got loose and caused a ruckus but they were totally cool about it. They couldn't be nicer and run a canoe/kayak rental business as well. My only complaint is that the beds are not great, just tolerable. But I would definitely come back again; the location is great as it's close to Munising, Marquette, etc. read more

Northwoods Resort is an ideal spot for a scenic retreat. Situated in the middle of the U.P., the dozen+ charming cabins that make up the Resort border the smaller Au Train Lake, and are just a mile or two south of Lake Superior. Cabins can be rented for short or long term, and provide a much more home-like experience compared to a standard hotel. It was also nice to be able to cook meals in the full kitchen (with silverware, dishes, glasses, toaster, coffee maker, pots/pans, micro, full-size fridge) rather than eating out for every meal. I recently stayed in one of the cabins with my family for a short winter getaway, and we loved it. There was hardly any snow, to snowmobilers' + snow sportsmen's dismay, but it was still picturesque and a lot of fun. The Au Train Lake was perfect for ice-fishing, and just a stone's throw from some cabins. I'd love to come back to the Resort over the summer and get out on the lake when it's NOT frozen... but that's just my preference. This would be a great spot to stay if you're into the outdoors and want a nice, quiet break from everything. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to get out and do much outdoors, but we heard recommendations for nearby hiking routes, ice caves, fishing, snowmobiling - and in the summer, the location is perfect for getting out in the water, boating, fishing, hiking, and enjoying the gorgeous scenery. We were staying in Munising, and were told we could rent a fishing boat for the day at Northwoods Resort. We rode over to secure one for the following day. The boat was decent. Motor wouldn't start many times, but overall, we had a great fishing experience, and were very happy out on Au Train Lake. read more
