Compared to what I'd usually eat, not so enjoyable, so I'll have to compare it with other vegan meals I've had and use the comments / opinions of the vegans at the table to guide me. We started off with coffee, they have cow juice for the carnivores :-) so happy with that and vegans all enjoyed their brews. My chickpea burger with chips was on a par with other vegan food I've had, so nothing outstanding here. None of the vegans were raving about their food so let's say good. My kids didn't like the Mac and cheese (not really cheese) so I had to buy more chips as they liked these. The kids also enjoyed their cows milk chocolate milkshakes. Those that had dessert were very happy. It cost $60 for 2 kids and myself, so fairly expensive for what we had. Those of us that had been there before agreed we enjoyed the food better last time, so perhaps it just wasn't their best day today. Will I go back, reluctantly, would the vegans go back, certainly. So if your vegan, definitely give the Powerhouse a go, if not, I'd recommend your journey takes you elsewhere.

The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico. Having a deep affection for the Lentil as Anything offerings available at Abbotsford Convent, I was keen to experience the variation on the delicious buffet theme closer to home. Understandably, the location of the smaller venue in High Street means that the beautiful surrounds and good natured bustle of the much adored Abbotsford address is not a feature, but I was still looking forward to sampling the food on offer with my similarly inclined Northern locals. We arrived to a fairly relaxed room, and just sat ourselves down at the end of the communal table, and waited for someone with access to menus to appear. Within five minutes or so, we were welcomed and presented with menus (this is a sit down and order version of Lentil, much like the St Kilda venue as I understand it), with volunteers working the floor. Our experience was pretty much chaos theory in action from the get go, with two people coming to collect our orders, my dish turning up a good 10 minutes before my dinner buddies' food, some confusion about what the dishes being presented actually were, and an extra dish being thrown into the mix. As I said though, people taking orders, presenting the food, (even perhaps cooking the food) are there learning in a volunteer capacity, so it really was more the case of looking on with gentle amusement than frustration about meal things - kind of like a 'dinner and show' deal. I ordered the tagine (a little bland for my liking), and my dinner companions both ordered the mixed curry (both agreeing it was quite delicious). In retrospect, maybe we should have kept the third plate of curry that was prepared by accident due to order mix-ups so I could have feasted on the curry dish as well!! In the initial craziness of the arrival and menu hunt, we failed to notice the specials board near the counter, so make sure you check that out too for variations on the menu offerings if staff forget to remind you to do so (I will be doing that very thing next visit...there was a pumpkin curry dish that sounded really appealing that I'm hoping will make a reappearance!!). As with the other Lentil as Anything venues, it's a 'pay what you feel the meal is worth' deal, how wonderful is that concept!?! More so I believe, because the people of Melbourne have embraced it enough to ensure this restaurant continues to grow across our fair city. While the 'meh' rating may sound a little harsh in the context of people learning to do great cafe / restaurant things for no pay, it was more a reflection of the blandness of my dish. This place IS relatively newish though, and IS a local venue I am keen to support, and IS just finding its feet a little, I'm quite certain, so I am keen to give it a another go in the very near future. The concept behind this restaurant, and people it tends to attract as staff and customers are worth waiting for Lentil as Anything 'The Preston chapter' to find the confidence and cadence of its big sister in Abbotsford. It's just a matter of time... :)

The Vegan Collective is a new food stall that's part of the Queen Victoria Winter Night Markets…read moreevery Wednesday night. It's great to have a 100% vegan option at the Queen Vic night markets, which for years have been very heavy on the meat. Not to mention, the food here is YUM. Right now they have 5 things on the menu, all vegan: - Middle Eastern Open Wrap - Japanese Udon Noodles - Yellow Lentil and Coconut Curry - Laksa Noodle Soup - Sesame Crusted Tofu I've had the Middle Eastern Open Wrap and the Laksa Noodle Soup. My friend had the Yellow Lentil and Coconut Curry. All very tasty. The Middle Eastern Open Wrap was my favourite -- it's probably one of the best falafel wraps I've had in a long time, and it seemed like a real step up from the junky kind you get at kebab shops. This one actually tasted somewhat "gourmet," if you know what I mean. Real thought was put into the flavours and the sauce, which was delicious. The laksa was OK -- a bit messy to eat if you can't find a seat and you have to stand around awkwardly holding the bowl in one hand and trying to navigate with your chopsticks/spoon in the other. (I'm bad with chopsticks anyway and nearly stabbed myself in the eye at one point.) This food stall is located next to the Sri Lankan food stall, away from the main row of food stalls, so you kinda have to hunt for it. It's further south than the main row of food stalls, if that makes sense -- kind of in the middle of the building, with more of the non-food stuff. On the plus side, that means the queue is much shorter than at other food stalls! Prices are right in line with every other food stall at the Queen Vic Night Market -- i.e., a couple of dollars overpriced, but you're paying for the atmosphere of the place. Really great food stall. I'll be back.

Yummy Middle Eastern vegetarian food on a strip that's full of meat-heavy kebab shops. Delicious…read morefood, cheap prices, very friendly owners/managers. And it's totally authentic (you're in Campbellfield, after all.) We've been here a few times and have gotten a variety of dishes. Staff knows what "vegan" means and will be sure to make your food without dairy or egg as long as you specify it when ordering. We've tried a few things on the menu, but I like the vegetarian plate, which comes with 7 falafel balls, hummus, and foul, as well as some pickled turnips. (Foul is a dish made from fava beans, chickpeas, and lemon oil -- an interesting flavour that I wasn't used to before I started eating foul. I like it, but maybe it's a bit of an acquired taste.) Their falafels are made using "grandma's recipe" and are light, fluffy, and fresh-tasting -- not heavy or greasy like from a kebab shop. Very nice falafels. The vegetarian plate will set you back $12 and is heaps of food. Cheeeeeeap. You can also get a falafel wrap for a mere $5, or a more exotic Iraqi falafel wrap that comes with Iraqi bread and pickled-mango "ambah" sauce. (I haven't tried this yet.) My boyfriend always gets the hummus fatteh (called "tesiyeh" in some countries, like Syria) -- which is a hummus-yogurt type of dish. Unfortunately, they don't have a dairy-free version of this, so it's not vegan. Definitely stop in at Falafel Moudy if you are hungry and want some excellent vegetarian Middle Eastern food on the cheap!

How I lived without it for all those years, I don't know. Thank gosh for friendship. Good Days is a hip new Vietnamese eatery in Brunswick that I wish existed in my neighbourhood. It's a cozy and welcoming reprieve from the bustle of the street, and a great mid-week dinner. I was catching up with an old friend, and we nabbed two bar seats which was a good life choice as you can watch the chefs prepare the food as you await your food coma. The menu is short and sweet featuring four Vietnamese classics (pho, rice paper rolls, chicken rice, and noodle salad) but with a point of difference. The impressive twist? Good Days is vegan-friendly and all the meat is ethically sourced - unheard of, I know! The free range pork is from McIver Farm Foods, the free range chicken is from Milawa Farms, the pasture raised organic beef is from Creighton Creek and Australian prawns are from North Queensland. Now for the real 'jump on your chair' moment - they have vegan pho! The aromatic vegetable broth (shiitake mushroom and kombu base) was exceptional, and the grilled and braised Asian mushrooms on top gave a 'meaty' vegetarian touch to the dish. My friend got the pork and prawn noodle salad with homemade rice paper rolls and we both agreed we could drink a gallon of the nuoc cham sauce it comes with. I have a weakness for rice paper rolls and highly recommend the mushroom and tofu vegan entree. The drinks menu features coconut water, Vietnamese iced coffee and jasmine tea. Speak to the staff if you're gluten-free and they will happily help you out. Good Days is an undersell - it's more like Great Nights and life-changing mushroom pho!

We went to…read moreVietnamese school together back in the "good old days" when you could get a solid Banh Mi for 2 bucks at lunchtime (sold out of an esky by a little VN granny). Long story short, Nam is a quiet achiever and nothing has changed. Continue to read my food review if you like. As I was visiting from outta town, I just had to skip my usual "benchmark dish" the Beef Pho and went straight to this mysterious Mushroom Pho. I must say I am converted. GDB use fresh succulent mushies. My fav is the innoki and the 2 slices of char grilled oyster mushroom cooked before me. The way it is beautifully presented reminded me of a scene from the 1985 Ramen movie "Tampopo." And just like in the movie, I caressed those 2 slices of oyster mushroom in that beautiful dark kombu broth and whispered "I shall meet you towards the end and eat you". One final note that sums up this dish is "delicate". I am not sure if pho from VN is delicate because of the portion size, the price or the way it is cooked. All I know is modern Aussie pho often lacks the subtlety of its motherland origins. In creating something unique, GDB is actually paying homage to an iconic dish. Pro tip: if you like the whole slow eating concept, I suggest you sit at the bar and kindly ask the chef to blanch your bean sprouts. This will help retain the temperature of your broth and you can savour every last drop, piping hot 'til you hit the spot. I also had the Saigon samurai beer which is ?locally brewed beer on tap. It is a light beer very similar to a 333 or Saigon bia (all it needs is some ice cubes and it's like being back in VN). Finally, I really wish someone else would create their version of this Mushroom Pho dish and battle Nam and his GDB team because then it would actually become something (just like in Japan you have different ramen based on different regions).
